Listening to Grantland's Watch the Thrones podcast last week, book reader Jason Concepcion noted that it's never been made clear how the old blood tangled their dragons, and however the dragons were tamed is essentially lost to history.

I inferred from that final scene with Drogon that the key is to let them out of their cage, be free, that old quote about letting butterflies fly away. Those dragons need time to spread their wings, explore the world and eat whatever the hell they'd like.

The question is, can Dany handle that? Her happiest dragon is out there making her constituents' lives a living hell, but does she need to let the other two do the same if she's to use them in her wars? What if they spend a year in freedom and then come back ready to charge for House Targaryen?
