That is another issue I had with Chris Kyle's character in the movie. He keeps talking about he wanted to protect his soldiers. He loves his country more than his family etc. But he keeps putting his guys at risk because of selfish reasons to go after that one guy. Whether its the Butcher or Mustafa. There was no consistency with him. You cant paint this picture of this perfect soldier then make decisions in the story telling that contradict that. Its one way or the other.
