Yes, they're trying to gain fanboy favor by making the character true to the character. Hopping the fourth wall, making pop culture references, and being a sarcastic smart as is sort of his thing. I fully expect- and demand- an extremely meta outing here. I'm kind of laughing at anyone who doesn't.
