679805, Rocky III (Stallone, 1982)
Posted by handle, Tue Jun-03-14 12:01 PM
As a child iI *loved* this film, but I just saw this agin and I wasn't impressed.

I love the *beats* in the film, the triumph from II, the silly celebrity stuff, Mr T. , but the fight sequences are pretty bad, and Apollo saying "Eye of the tiger" about 5 times makes me cringe.

I'd kind of like to see a remake told through the eyes of Clubber Lang.

Anyone have thoughts on this film who have seen it recently?

I know it gave us "Eye of the Tiger" and all that, but I've long thought that Rocky 3 was the worst one. Yes, I'd easily put Rocky 5 over it.

680138, Umm No lol

Not Rocky 5. That one does not exist. There was enough in 3 to keep it entertaining. Having Appollo train Rocky, seeing Rock comfortable and not as hungry anymore... many great character dimensions still in this one.

5 just sucked through and through.
679818, A Clubber Lang film would be awesome

And no....it's not worse than Rocky 5. The only plus I took away from that movie was that it didn't try to act like Rocky could possibly be ok after fighting Ivan Drago. Out of all the sequels that one's the most disappointing simply it doesn't have that same feel of triumph that comes with all of the others. The father-son stuff doesn't hit hard because the son is really just so whiny. And Tommy Gunn comes off so lame.

The fight choreography is Rocky 3 really isn't that great though. I've been a boxing fan all my life and even I couldn't help but smh at the lack of defense in that movie. It's only forgivable because Mr. T is such a force every time he sets eyes on Rocky.

679842, We can all agree that Apollo let Rocky win the foot race right?
Posted by LA2Philly, Sun Jun-01-14 02:48 PM
You can clearly see Apollo not in full stride....it was a great move though on his part.

I always LOL at the part when Apollo first gets Rocky in the ring and this dude can't even move his feet around the ring lol...like I know he's supposed to have lead feet and a stagnant fighting style, bu the extreme of that scene always makes me laugh.

Great movie though...I can never change the channel once I flip to it.
679881, First 4 are classics, 5 really sucks, 6 is actually cool.

3 is 80s central though, with Mr. T and Hulk Hogan though.

...and i'd never fully seen the 1st 3 movies til a year ago...3 has ALOT of cheesy moments, but it's still a great movie...

Netflix has em now and I'm in heaven. I'm gonna watch them with my nephew so he can learn how to have the eye of the tiger.
680139, Agreed.

679985, 3 is the most entertaining imo
Posted by rjc27, Tue Jun-03-14 08:25 AM
you have apollo, clubber and thunderlips all in this one,
680248, the whole thunder lips scene hasnt aged well

mostly because Hogan couldnt act for shit. But the rest is still incredible. Even with them embracing on the beach.
679994, i still love it but it's definitely the cheesiest one
Posted by gumz, Tue Jun-03-14 10:35 AM
it was a full-on 80s movie basically...then again 4 was the montage crazy one so i guess it's a toss up between those two for which is the most ridiculous but i still love them shits.
680029, Just re-watched it.

Man, I dunno, I still love it. Saw it in the theater when I was probably 6 or 7 and loved it then too.

And the training montages? The training montages?! The best.

Liked how they tackle Paulie's obvious racism:

Paulie: C'mon Rock, let's get outta here. I don't like these people.
Rock: Maybe they don't like you.
Paulie: ...What'd I ever do to them?!

Classic Paulie!

Also agree that a separate movie, from Clubber Lang's perspective, would be cool. If you look a little bit closer you can see past the bravado, he can be more than just the villain. I'd be into seeing more of his motivation.

I'd even say that Stallone turns in some of his better performances in this one, though Talia Shire probably has some of her worst (the slow-mo waving Rocky in on the beach made me laugh).

Thanks for making my Tuesday night PTP, wouldn't have thought to watch this otherwise!

PS Full disclosure: back in college me and my roommate would throw on every Rocky movie in the background during finals to power us through. To say I'm a little colored by nostalgia would not be off base.

This always cracked me up. His Archie Bunkr azz
680188, it has the best line in the series by far.

Reporter: "What's your prediction for the fight, Clubber?
Clubber: "My prediction?"
Reporter: "Yes."
Clubber: "...PAIN."

I agree with phenompyrus that it's too 80's-centric. They could've used a better dramatic device than Hogan beating up Rocky, although that was taken from real life (watch The Real Rocky from ESPN 30 for 30). It might be the most fun movie in the series though.

takes flask from coat pocket, takes one more good pull, tosses bottle at the flashing lights in this post as glass shatters and alarms ring*

Burt Young was killing it during this era, from this flick up thru Lou in Back to School four years later was pretty much flawless.
680250, 3 is the most fun to watch.

702500, that always tripped me out because 3 was the first one i saw
Posted by Mynoriti, Fri Sep-04-15 03:19 PM
then i saw relaxed brain rocky in 1 and 2, and wondered how that worked
702601, one thing that absolutely cracked me up about 3

is the first training montages before Rocky and Clubber fight for the first time in the film.

Clubber is like training in a fuckin dungeon doing pullups on a meat rack and Rocky is dancing around ,smiling and not taking his training seriously at all. Cut back to Mr T grunting..Cut to Rocky smiling and dancing around like a fuckin idiot...lol

I always laugh and say to myself , " HE IS GOING TO GET HIS ASS KICKED!"....lol
