The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Director J.J. Abrams says, "We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII ADDS ACADEMY AWARD WINNER LUPITA NYONG'O AND GAME OF THRONES' GWENDOLINE CHRISTIE

Lupita Nyong'o joins the recently announced cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. This year, her breakthrough performance in 12 Years a Slave earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Gwendoline Christie, currently starring in the hit television series Game of Thrones as Brienne of Tarth, has also been cast in the production. She can next be seen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2.

"I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "It's thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape."

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the Saga Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

I am just guessing but I think the cross hilt saber allows you to fight with one hand and use your other hand for force attacks. If you block with one hand can unleash a force choke with the other sounds like a good idea to me.

Of course you could do the same with a regular saber but we've seen people lose their hands a lot.

Posted by wallysmith, Mon Dec-01-14 11:13 AM
First up, Machete Order: really compelling argument for rewatching the movies in this order, skipping Episode I entirely: IV, V, II, III, VI:

http://www.nomachetejuggling.com/2011/11/11/the-star-wars-saga-suggested-viewing-order/

And apparently Topher Grace edited the prequel movies into one, highly focused 85 min tour de force:

http://www.slashfilm.com/topher-grace-edited-star-wars-prequels-85minute-movie/
689276, It's taking me years to come to this thinking, but....
Posted by CaptNish, Mon Dec-01-14 02:33 PM
...the Machete Order sucks because it cuts out the best prequel. Don't get me wrong. I get the complaints. But that is the last film that actually feels like a Star Wars film. And as I've rewatched all of these films, three just doesn't hold up and is hopelessly corny at times, and two is an ugly piece of shit. At least MENACE still has practical sets.
689282, Considering I haven't seen any of the movies in years and years...
Posted by wallysmith, Mon Dec-01-14 03:55 PM
I'm curious why you think the first movie "actually feels like a Star Wars" film? I don't have any dog in this fight, but my vague recollection of the prequel trilogy seems to mirror most opinions out there:

I < II < III.

I didn't love any of these, but if someone were to rewatch the original movies before VII, Episode I really doesn't link well with the rest of the movies.
689309, Episode II is by far the worst one...only good part is Yoda's fight
Posted by gumz, Tue Dec-02-14 08:42 AM
i actually enjoyed Episode I despite the bad child acting and Jar Jar
689322, Fair enough, I remember almost nothing of Ep II.
Posted by wallysmith, Tue Dec-02-14 11:48 AM
But I do still remember that pod race... regardless of Machete Order, that was still a great scene
689352, lol man, i hate that yoda fight so much
Posted by Mynoriti, Tue Dec-02-14 07:33 PM
it's looked goofier each time i've seen it

i can't think of anything in phantom menace i did like. yeah, that lightsaber fight might be one of the best action sequences of the whole series, but i had zero reason to give a shit about qui gon gin, so when he gets killed, he might as well just be some clone. think back to obi-wan dying in what was a nothing fight in comparison, but that shit hits HARD.

at this point, i can think of much of anything i liked in those movies. i'd like to pretend they dont exist but i do have fun shitting on them.
689676, my favorite part about E1
Posted by JtothaI, Mon Dec-08-14 07:44 PM
The moment where Anakin Fires up the pod racer, and the score kicks in I honestly got a little emotional, be it the classic score for the OT, knowing that Luke becomes the pilot that destroys the Death Star etc...I just felt it in that scene. Still do. Most likely it was just the score that sealed the deal but I just dug it.
689310, OK, first up, original trilogy...
Posted by phenompyrus, Tue Dec-02-14 09:07 AM
Not the retouched ones, but the OG versions, are still some of the best movies of all time, hands down. All 3 of them, not just the first 2. I think Jedi is the one I watched most of any of them, and the Jabba scene may be my favorite scene/sequence of the entire trilogy (although my favorite parts change with each viewing). Recently, Lando's double cross in Cloud City when Vader levitates Han's weapon from across the room is a highlight, and I know I'm not the only one there.

Through the years people have tried throwing darts at the originals, with plot hole discussions, but in all honesty, most of the our favorite movies have gigantic plot holes, so it's better to look past them.
689311, Next, the prequels...
Posted by phenompyrus, Tue Dec-02-14 09:13 AM
I've come around on these a little bit, as I'm sure many have, through the years. I and II still aren't good movies by any stretch, but they have some geek out moments that really are up there with some of the better geek out moments ever on screen: Darth Maul lighting up the 2 blades on his lightsaber (and that lightsaber fight is pretty awesome too) in I, and Yoda finally lighting up his lightsaber in II. The pod race is pretty solid as well.

III holds up better than the other 2, but is still only an OK, maybe good, ride at best. It does have some awesome moments though: the final duel, Mace's last stand, "Vader... RISE", Vader before the scream.

Other than that, the trilogy, b/c of Jar Jar, trade negotiation talk, both actors that play Anakin (especially Hayden Christenson, who might still be the worst actor... ever), an overall poor acting turn from Portman, and the over-the-top use of CGI, are unfortunately what stick out the most.
689350, Hayden Christenson, who might still be the worst actor... ever
Posted by go mack, Tue Dec-02-14 07:07 PM
The only good thing I remember him in was "Life as a house", but that was mainly Kevin Kline's but thought Christensen was decent in it back then, haven't watched it in over ten years tho.
690923, ehh... and perhaps I am just such a Stan for Star Wars
Posted by ThaAnthology, Thu Jan-08-15 04:00 PM
But I really moved past the flaws (even Jar-Jar) because I was fascinated by the history and the expansion of the universe. I thought the prequels were cool and my son loves them ('cept 3... it was a lil rough for him).

I mean as much as I analyze movies... I keep my goggles off for Star Wars. It's just different for me, ya know.

I dig everything Star Wars tho.

THE RAID Trio To Appear In STAR WARS: EPISODE 7 - THE FORCE AWAKENS
Todd Brown

It would appear that the force is set to awaken in Indonesia.

Though there has been no comment whatsoever from any of the performers or their representation, Twitch has learned that a key trio of performers from Gareth Evans' The Raid and The Raid 2 - leading man Iko Uwais, Mad Dog / Prakoso actor Yayan Ruhian and The Raid 2 finale fighter Cecep Arif Rahman, credited simply as The Assassin - will all appear in JJ Abrams' upcoming Star Wars: Episode 7 - The Force Awakens.

We have no word yet on what their characters may be, which side of the good guy / bad guy line they fall upon or whether any will survive through until the subsequent pictures but think on this: After the underwhelming prequel trilogy with its massive over-reliance on CGI trickery not only has Abrams shown a strong preference for practical effects but has now also cast a trio of highly skilled martial artists who have already demonstrated their skills with blades, batons, etc in a world where super powered warriors fight with blades, batons, etc.

Yes, please?

690928, The genre cast they've put together for the new SW is amazing.
Posted by phenompyrus, Thu Jan-08-15 04:41 PM
I mean, they have...
The original cast, and they haven't even announced Billy Dee Williams yet
Andy Serkis from LOTR, The Hobbit, Planet of the Apes, King Kong
Max von Sydow from ... a lot.
John Boyega from Attack the Block (he's about to blow)
Adam Driver from Girls
Daisy Ridley
Oscar Isaac who will also be playing Apocalypse in X-Men.
Brienne of Tarth from Game of Thrones
Lupita N'yongo
Cameo rumored for Daniel Craig
Directed by JJ Abrams, whose had a hand in Star Trek and Lost
Domhnall Gleeson from Harry Potter and Dredd 3D
Warwick Davis
and now the 3 stars of The Raid and The Raid 2, including Iko Uwais?

That cast list alone is better than the prequels.

690986, I need at least one lightsaber fight in a forest setting
Posted by ShinobiShaw, Fri Jan-09-15 01:25 PM
Watched the prequels not too long ago and while the duels were pretty and acrobatic they were boring. The fights between Luke and Darth in the first set of movies had more color to it. I'm going to need some one on one or one on two duels. Outdoor settings. Most of the lightsaber fights are inside. Lets have a fight in a forest. People force jumping from tree to tree. People chopping thru whole trees when they miss swings.

702166, Saw a work-in-progress the other night

Sorry Zoo I couldn't find this in the search.

So I saw a work-in-progress version last night. I don't know what I should say since I could probably get sued for anything. But, Disney and J.J. did right. I don't think I'm gonna be as enthusiatic as everyone else, but I'm happy Star Wars is excellent again. With all that said, John Boyega better be in the next two b. For me, it's the 3rd best Star Wars film. Might be the 2nd best once I see the finished thing.

Disney threw a dope party afterwards on a rooftop terrace. Some of their employees are gonna be blackmailed/fired. Shit was like Caligula and Wolf of Wall Street.

703659, I love them holding back on the Luke reveal
Posted by mrshow, Tue Oct-20-15 12:38 AM
It's really adding to the anticipation.
703667, Cats is mad about that too
Posted by Paps_Smear, Tue Oct-20-15 06:27 AM
People are furious no Luke is in the poster.

No idea why people want the poster and trailer to spoil things. I'm fine waiting to be shocked when I get to the theater.
703688, Are we sure he's not the hooded one w/ the metal hand on R2?

But he's def. gonna be that dude to get the next generation up to par.
703710, we sure he IS in this though? bwood??
Posted by Stadiq, Tue Oct-20-15 06:23 PM

Maybe they are hedging their bets and saving him for the next one?

Of course, Star Wars is a license to print money so no reason to do that....
703740, According to the rumors he is only in it in one scene at the end.
Posted by soulfunk, Wed Oct-21-15 12:06 PM
Essentially the entire movie is a search for him, and is a set up for him to play a larger role in the next film, but he's not a major character in this movie at all.

Posted by xangeluvr, Tue Oct-20-15 09:53 AM
yeah, the teasers didn't get me that interested. i mean, i would have watched anyway, but this trailer has me excited. very interested to see how the jedi died out and how the empire seemingly only increased in power after the events of ROJ.
703668, Looks great... Let's do a Long and Late money prediction...
Posted by phenompyrus, Tue Oct-20-15 06:35 AM
The teasers got me hyped more, but this was still top notch. Didn't reveal anything, while still showing the goods (a snippet of a lightsaber duel and first glimpse at Leia). I am on board for them not showing Luke yet too.

So, how much money do we see this thing making...
Opening weekend?
Domestic total?
Worldwide total?

703696, i've seen enough of the plot revealed now. i'm good.

i like that there's still no luke. in fact, it would be EPIC if he doesn't appear in anything before the movie comes. keep us salivating. wishful thinking tho.

is he a recluse no one's heard from in years, in the mold of an obi-wan in episode IV?

young jedi finn looked fearful for a hot second there when kylo ren was about to attack. anyone think luke shows up/has a role in the outcome of the duel?

703707, Isn't Luke not in this one much?
Posted by go mack, Tue Oct-20-15 04:38 PM
maybe it was a rumor but thought he may not appear to end. not sure if spoiler cuz who knows if that's true or not. I wouldn't be mad at it, but wonder if lots of people would...
703712, hmm... not sure
Posted by Flash80, Tue Oct-20-15 06:44 PM
whereas i stayed on theforce dot net all day/every day in the run ups to episodes II and III, i've largely stayed away from the spoilers and speculation for this.

like what you said, i wouldn't be mad at a small dose either. i mean hell, we got like three seconds of darth sidious in episode II. maybe we get the payoff in episode VIII, despite hamill being that much older.

lol.. i waited for 3 hours for phantom menace the day before release at the old coronet theatre in san francisco. pissed me off 'cause it was for the noon show, and when we got there the day of, you could still get walk-up tickets like an hour before showtime.

i'm breaking tradition of seeing episodes VI and I-III on the first day and instead going to wait a few days.. probably take the day off and go the following tuesday or wednesday to the morning show.

...not sure how that's supposed to work

>Makes perfect sense. Dude was as conflicted as his pops,
>really.

It's been awhile since I've seen ROTJ but I can't recall anything in it that would lead Luke to the dark side after that flick &/or the previous 2 episodes

I think maybe he dies early, that's who we see Rey distraught over, & then he returns again on some Obi Wan steez

Guess we'll find out soon enough tho
704757, Right. In ROTJ he faced everything that could possibly turn
Posted by soulfunk, Thu Nov-19-15 10:31 AM
him to the dark side and was still able to stay strong. He faced the death of all his friends in the rebellion, the possibility of Vader going after his sister, his father trying to get him to join with him, and the emperor directly trying to get him to turn. And he still threw his saber down and rejected the dark side.

Luke turning to the dark side after all that and redeeming his father would cheapen the OT way too much.

On a side note - the emperor really messed that situation up. When he turned Anakin in the PT it was a LONG process from when Anakin was a young boy in which he manipulated him and put him in situations to question the Jedi and everything he had been taught. The Clone Wars series really did a good job of showing a lot of that manipulation, and the complex relationship he had with Padme. All of that made the quick turn that Anakin made in ROTS way more believable.

Also his final turn came after Palpatine had him kill Dooku and later attack Windu. Both of these actions were clearly wrong and left him with no option but to turn to the dark side. But in ROTJ when he tried to turn Luke he wanted him to kill his own father? That would have been much more difficult of a turn, and it would have been after just meeting Luke vs. having manipulated him over most of his life like he had Anakin. I guess it was really just a hail mary - Palpatine didn't know who would win between Vader or Luke, but he knew that in the end he would have one apprentice that would be stronger than before. If Vader won he would have proven his loyalty by killing his own son. and if Luke had won he'd have a new, younger apprentice who didn't have to deal with the injuries that Vader had.
704369, so it would seem that's not actually a lightsaber, right?
Posted by Tiger Woods, Fri Nov-06-15 11:57 AM

705636, MSW leaks
Posted by Innocent Criminal, Mon Dec-14-15 11:50 AM
Supposedly he had call sheets and stuff from the shooting, if he's telling the truth then it wasn't that well protected. The plot according to the call sheets and stuff is all over the place.
705648, Yeah. But that's been the only source of leaks.
Posted by soulfunk, Mon Dec-14-15 01:07 PM
And with it having been the only source for so long, there was no way to know if it was credible. Usually there would have been reports from all over the place months in advance.

With this, the MSW leaks were out there and then as each trailer was released there was more and more confirmation that the leaked info was correct.
705650, well I don't even know what MSW means so I'm straight hahaha

So they're saying Finn is just the white girl's weed carrier. The magical negro needed to spur her to her destiny. Not force sensitive at all? Anyone got the real scoop? Bummer if so, I'll still go watch and see.
705711, LOL not really a spoiler
Posted by Heinz, Tue Dec-15-15 05:40 PM
If you couldnt tell he wasn't gonna be force sensitive from the little things they were showing us then you were ignoring that shit lol

You think they would reveal that early that he was gonna be a jedi?!?! C'mon dude. JJ is never that blunt that would be a HUGE reveal especially after knowing he's a stormtrooper who left the army. He didn't leave because he was force sensitive LOL.

705712, RE: LOL not really a spoiler
Posted by Innocent Criminal, Tue Dec-15-15 05:51 PM
I've been 50/50 on the FS part so that isn't the most disappointing part. If it turns out all he is there for is to be Rey's version of Peeta that will be the more disappointing part. He supposedly served no purpose other than to save Poe and get helped by the grrl power a few times. Even not being FS Han Solo was a bad ass in his own right.
705726, LMAO just say you want the young black kid to be force sensitive
Posted by Heinz, Tue Dec-15-15 11:18 PM
Thats all you a saying right now.....get over it. He's not force sensitive, maybe in the next ep we'll get more of a background story and maybe he'll be force sensitive but probably not.

My guess is that Rey and Kylo Ren are siblings and their mom/dad are the obvious and that she will eventually be a jedi before the trilogy is done.

It wouldve been cool if Finn was force sensitive but im okay with him not being a jedi but it wouldve been way too obvious of a storyline to already reveal him with a lightsaber/being force sensitive that early in the teasers.

My wife watched them with me and enjoyed the setup. Doesn't make II and III any better, but you don't have to bother with I, which is a win in anybody's book

>addition of new characters...it wasn't horrible but it wasn't
>awesome either

It's so hot, and the cheese is all melty and shit.

And sometimes, they fuckin put meat on it.

Then there's this weird bread on the bottom.

And the whole thing is a circle shape. So fucking stupid.

I THINK PIZZAMAKER BE TROLLING
705846, You know what I hate about poor analogies

How people go on and on, as if having the same pizza with the same name on the same menu where that's the expectation is comparable to plot rehashing in the same movie franchise.
705847, dont bother with him, hes a very miserable person and gets
Posted by blkprinceMD05, Fri Dec-18-15 03:29 PM
called on it all the time, no amount of words on a message board can fix whatever is going on with him
705864, I couldn't be happier
Posted by Mgmt, Fri Dec-18-15 05:17 PM
No misery on this happy SW release day. You were the one complaining

Not looking for a "fix" from okayplayer.

705863, Listen to "blkprince"

Pizza was good before just as it is now. Nice rescue, though.

705879, where I am. Not earth shattering, but a welcome return to good

Don't want to start this shit again, but it's not Nolan's Batman vs 90s Batman, where the reboot took shit to a new, game changing level. It's more a guy that studied the playbook and is a competent movie maker making an enjoyable, fairly safe movie that moves the plot along the lines of the first (middle?) three while taking advantage but not pimping modern technology.
705814, JJ played it pretty safe besides the obvious spoiler but I aint mad

BB8 took me straight back to kid days & there's some great Rey/Finn potential for the sequels

Driver's better w/ the mask on
705815, I'm predicting $864M domestic....

I don't think I've ever seen this much hype for a movie in my life. Not Avatar, Avengers, or Episode I were hyped this much.
705817, whoops

705819, Great time at the theater.
Posted by Castro, Fri Dec-18-15 08:35 AM
2:00 in the morning and it was a full house.

IMAX screen truly renders the scale of some of the shots in a way that is so beautiful. It feels like an epic.
705845, How is the 3D by the way?
Posted by go mack, Fri Dec-18-15 03:01 PM
I opted for non 3D for first time. Didn't see anything that would stand out better in 3D that I can think of.
705848, probably overrated. just saw it in regular this morning. was fine.
Posted by Flash80, Fri Dec-18-15 03:40 PM
...particularly when you're in a quality digital movie house.

not a fan a 3D in general. i find it too distracting. cool for kids and folks who have short attention spans for a plot though.

still kinda trippin on the film. i'll be back later. maybe in the spoiler thread.
705849, Nothing special.... honestly the only thing I remember....
Posted by KnowOne, Fri Dec-18-15 03:43 PM
is when they showed the Imperial Destroyer the tip of it pointed out into the audience. Besides that I barely noticed anything.
705862, same here altho some of the early scenes with rey i thought
Posted by blkprinceMD05, Fri Dec-18-15 05:02 PM
it really helped to convey the physical scope of where she was at during those moments

largely useless tho
705871, RE: same here altho some of the early scenes with rey i thought
Posted by Castro, Fri Dec-18-15 06:50 PM
That alone was worth the 3D tho
705893, That's the only part that stood out to me in Real 3D as well
Posted by jigga, Fri Dec-18-15 11:13 PM
>is when they showed the Imperial Destroyer the tip of it

I'll still see it in IMAX 3D soon
705874, I'm not the best reference on Real3D, but my opinion:
Posted by B9, Fri Dec-18-15 06:57 PM
My eyes just can't focus right in Real3D, but there were a few scenes that it added a little something to it (battles, snow scene). RPX, I imagine, is more of a must. Sound design in this thing is pretty spectacular on the right system.

Ultra AVX didn't work. only way i found out were the free passes they handed out on the way out of the theatre.
706003, seen it both ways. I preferred the 3D.

www.engadgethd.com - the other stuff i'm looking at
705875, Were they selling concert tshirts at anyone else's theatre?
Posted by B9, Fri Dec-18-15 06:58 PM
Atlantic Station in ATL they had a full on merch booth in the lobby...between that and the three or four Star Wars related commercials before the movie, Disney is going to squeeze it's money back for Lucasarts on the first fucking one. Evil mouse.
705881, yes, at 7:30AM no less
Posted by Mgmt, Fri Dec-18-15 07:30 PM
705980, I'll be back in two months, when it's okay to be honest
Posted by Basaglia, Sun Dec-20-15 07:22 AM

and discuss why this shit was wack.

706008, way too reverential of the orginal
Posted by ternary_star, Sun Dec-20-15 05:21 PM
it's been said a million times, but this really is a re-hash of "A New Hope" in a hilarious number of ways.

Finn and Rey are interesting enough to carry this movie with light nods to the past. There was no need to focus on Han as much as this one does. The scenes with Han and Leia are cringe-worthy. really awkward and poorly acted.

no real memorable action scenes (the initial escape from the First Order should've been WAY better), but competently made and a decent setup for the future. the few bits of CGI-heavy action were TERRIBLE. thank god they focused on practical effects, because those were awesome (BB8, giant pig creature, cantina scene)

i'm way more excited to see what Rian Johnson does with the next one. hoping JJ takes a back seat with his fanboy shit.
