The show could go any number of ways, but I enjoyed the pilot for the most part.

Soderbergh is good at what he does. Clever editor, too. I'll be re-watching the first c-section scene just to pay attention to the cutting.

And if this first episode was any indication, Clive is trying to make a run at statues.

Is the use of contemporary synth-based music as the score for a show set 114 years ago a conscious attempt to frame the show in a modern context? In other words, to draw parallels between that era and our own? Or is it just an attempt to seem more appealing to the average viewer? A little of both? I found the score well-employed, but a little jarring. Maybe that was the goal, though...
684036, the cinematography is pretty modern too.
Posted by raptor44, Sat Aug-16-14 01:09 PM
i like when period pieces don't feel the need to play into the idea of sepia toning everything, and using static shots, so we get that it's taking place in the past. public enemies' use of handheld and digital (the latter long before it was the norm) is another good example of this.

i definitely think it's meant to push us to think about modern parallels a bit more, but i also think that it's in line with how soderbergh typically does things these days (cliff martinez score, handheld, shallow focus, etc). i love the score and the look of the show - the whites are so damn crisp, which is a nice parallel to the literal darkness in a lot of places. (i'm not 100% sold that i love the show itself, but stylistically i think it's great so far.)
685230, I feel like the show emphasizes Thackery being ... a modernist?

like one of the central components of Thackery's character is that he's separate from his time -- aloof, above it. I felt like the music helped underscore that. It was jarring, out of place, didn't really care that everyone could tell it doesn't belong. Thackery seems like he's dissatisfied with the world around him, sees it as poor and imperfect and behind the times, and Thackery has decided that he will just unapologetically push forward regardless, drag it forward with him. I definitely feel like "futurism" and "modernism" is a key theme, especially with Thackery, and the music underscores that. Even if it feels out of place in the 1900s that's what the story is about.
686987, i fully support this idea.
Posted by raptor44, Tue Oct-14-14 07:54 PM
i hadn't thought of it like that, and i think you're definitely correct. that's a very interesting idea and definitely hovers over pretty much every aspect of the series.
683941, This show is exciting
Posted by dgonsh, Thu Aug-14-14 12:49 PM
My gf and I have been anticipating ep 1 since we saw the first teaser a few months ago. It did not disappoint. What a thrilling watch. I like Andy greenwalds analysis of this being a directors accomplishment rather than what we are used to with compelling television being a writers world. Soderbergh's vision and skill is slathered all over this. Clive as Thackery is perfect.

The surgery scenes were difficult to watch without cringing, something that hasn't happened to me in a medical drama since....the beginnings of ER? Good on Cinemax for throwing the cash and freedom at this project. While banshee has a cult following, The Knick is what's gonna put them on the award radar.

I cannot wait for the next episode.

Also, loved Bono's daughter injecting liquid cocaine into Clives nether regions. Hilarious and something I haven't seen before that's for certain.
683942, And how could I forget to mention the score?
Posted by dgonsh, Thu Aug-14-14 12:54 PM
That synth riding through the premiere was one of the best most unexpected scores I've heard on television since....I can't even recall right now. So fucking good.

Posted by dgonsh, Sat Aug-16-14 03:37 PM
I loved seeing how all the characters (well not all) were living in their respective areas of 1900 NYC

I particularly loved the juxtaposition between the blonde lady that runs the hospital (Cornelia?) in New York downton abbey life to Dr Edwards in his awful situation waiting in line for the bathroom that spews brown water.

Dr Edwards at this point only two eps in is kinda the real protagonist of the show. I'm sure that'll change as obviously Clive is the star, but right now it doesn't really feel that way.

Ugh everything about this show is fucking addictive and masterfully executed.

685229, I just binge-watched everything on a freeview weekend -- AMAZING
Posted by celery77, Fri Sep-12-14 06:03 PM
made me decide whether I wanted to maybe pay the subscription to see it all, or else do the work of pirating it (I'm out of the loop on that stuff, not set up for it at the moment).

After I watched it, I poked around to see what people were saying. I couldn't find all that much. I was mainly interested in how people were describing it -- like how did they try to explain it. Seemed like a lot of focus on the doctor's drug use, the gore of the surgeries, when really I think it should just be explained as a "medical drama."

Is there really that much different between this an ER, except that it doesn't bullshit about how weird and unpleasant the medical field can be? Plots are built around patient struggles, all the extra details (drug use, gore) that get described are just the window dressing. As far as plot and motivation go, it's sick patient, cure sick patient, then subplots around it.

But it is that sort of stylization that makes it stand out, and I have no idea why I only heard about Clive Owen's drug use when when very compelling race themes seem to be a central component as well.

Already don't know how I'm going to watch this weekend, already unhappy about it. Original plan was to just get the whole season somehow when it was all done, but honestly it's so fucking good I'mma be upset when I know it's rolling on and I'm not in on the story.

oh and, pleased myself when I connected the dots to Typhoid Mary. Interesting how they're dramatizing it, but it feels like building towards a fictional Typhoid Mary might be the arc drawing to the finale of this season.
685259, Oop sorry still watching

Why the heck was I surprised and just as anxious when Thackery was with Edwards mom

I mean I'm glad it wasn't appendicitis and he was right but yeah I have SO much doubt in their abilities lol

They done a fantastic job in convincing me of how haphazard it was back then...all those time travel books I've read...also watching outlander just yeesh

only gripe is the eps are "short".

you get sunk into the storyline.

then look up and it's already 30 mins in.

then they wrap the show at like 46 mins.

I feel cheated, but "always leave them wanting more"

tried to tell my Ma to start watching it and she was like "what? week to week? why would I torture myself? I'll just wait til it's on netflix and binge watch" lol

great show tho.

aside from the depressing week a couple weeks ago when it wasnt on, we try and get home every friday night by 10 or 11 to watch this shit. thats how much we love it. fuck going out on friday nights, The Knick is on!

As someone below mentioned, the scene this week with Bertie being afraid to do the emergency c-section on the woman with Thack telling him "we got this!" and then immediately panning to the blood and them on the ground all defeated. Masterful.

Algernon is still the protagonist of this show and easily the most easily relatable for the audience. Thack is the guilty pleasure.
685274, No lie fav scene of this past episode...*spoilers*
Posted by StephBMore, Mon Sep-15-14 10:38 AM
was Dr. Thackery getting high and walking into the surgery like "we got this, we gonna do this and that and SAVE THAT MOM AND BABY"

and the next scene is like blood all over the floor and all over his hands and he's just sitting their dazed.

Amazing.
685320, I'm kind of salty about how that nun blamed Edwards
Posted by SammyJankis, Tue Sep-16-14 02:16 PM
for the meningitis patient when Gallinger blocked any attempt at Edwards trying to help and Gallinger just took the case over. he wouldn't let my dude even look at the man's chart for heavens sake. And now Gallinger's baby gets sick and all of a sudden it was Edward's patient.
686875, I can't wait until Thackery flips on Gallinger....
Posted by rorschach, Mon Oct-13-14 11:43 AM
right now he's loyal on GP. But Edwards' talent will not be denied. The man's going to keep that spot he was given. Gallinger can't think outside the box in the way that Thackery and Edwards do and it'll eventually show.

However it's hard to watch at the parts that have to deal with pregnant women and babies.

I was hoping that Edwards would finally get to shine however I don't think it will be that easy for him still. I would have like to see him continue to help his own people but integrate patients. But I know that wouldn't happen.

Also you see how familiar him and Cordelia are together, we about to see some miscegenation soon.

ep could be a turning point.

also the scene with edwards and cornelia was a bit ambiguous to me.
was that their first time hooking up? seemed like he was caught
a bit off guard.

then they probably would have just kicked the Negroes out the back hid Edwards and locked them out and told the mob the mob they left. Hell the hospital got trashed anyway. They went the extra mile by having Gallinger and Sister Harriet take some of the victims to the monastery and for racist ass Cleary to drag his ambulance full of injured "dirty coons" all the way to the Negro infirmary and for Thackery to go all abolitionist. I mean I'm glad they all did it but it just seemed weird, maybe we'll get some kind of explanation for it next week.

685988, I don't think Thackery was a bigot...
Posted by StephBMore, Tue Sep-30-14 10:10 AM
I think he disliked Edwards not because of his skin tone, but because he came out of nowhere and was forced upon him. He, in turn, used everything "negative" about Edwards to be a jerk to him but he couldn't deny that Edwards was a great doctor. Thackery never had a problem treating black patients either, he just didn't want to do it in his hospital. He's obviously down with the swirl and had no issue going to help Edward's mom when she was hurt.

The ambulance driver? Don't see him as a bigot either...he actually cares more about himself than anyone else...he just thought it was messed up that these ppl were getting attacked for no reason.

As for the other doctor...he only went along because he felt he had to. He's no freedom fighter, he's just a lackey going along with Thackery to win more points in his eyes. That's it. He's still a bigot and a racist who felt slighted.

Other than those ppl...who are these "bigots"
686033, RE: I don't think Thackery was a bigot...
Posted by SammyJankis, Tue Sep-30-14 01:09 PM
I see your point about Thackery somewhat but he did seem to have a issue upfront with Edwards being Black when they first met. And up until last week didn't give him much professional respect. Other than Edwards mother I don't think we've seen him treat a Black patient. And he didn't know that was Edwards mother at first but he did know she was the beloved house maid of the the Knick's top investor and they are trying to get more funding for equipment. And I don't know if laying with Chinese prostitute is considered down with the swirl.

I guess I consider Cleary a bigot because of his utterance of "dirty coon" in the beginning of the episode. He didn't strike me at as the sort of guy who would risk his life for the good of the Negro.

Gallinger is really the outward bigot of the group I don't think he will ever change.
686044, my impression of thackery
Posted by Crash Bandacoot, Tue Sep-30-14 02:17 PM
is fluid. like who/what is he? what motivates him? at times it
seems he wants to maintain the status quo and then other
times he wants to stand out....as it seems to his benefit
(opportunity). like the scene in the 'gallery' when gallinger
punched edwards. he jestered towards the audience, 'knee him next
time' or something to that effect. he seemed to like the fact
that he had a crowd and played to it. seems like one of those
quirky yet perhaps brilliant surgeon types who is trying to figure
out stuff in his own unique way. will be interesting to see how
his character develops (or not).

as for Clearly, he has issue with everyone. That's what I meant...he even got on the nun, so he don't mess with anyone too tough.

As for Thackery, I think Edwards being black was just another strike...like he was like oh hell no I don't want to do this, and he had an attitude about it THEN when he saw Edwards it was like "On top of this, he's black?!?...now I have to deal with this shit." because he already knew that Edwards being black would cause issues with his staff and patients.

I feel like if Thackery was really a bigot, even Edwards skills couldn't sway him to accept him and be cordial/friendly/etc...his attitude toward him was just about him not getting his way and Edwards being black just made it worst. But once he saw his skills, he was like YES.
686077, The mob and the police was fuckin' with Cleary's money...
Posted by KwesiAkoKennedy, Tue Sep-30-14 10:54 PM
That's part of his motivation as well.

Up to this point, we've got an idea that he's a bit more complicated than just the petty hate machine we were introduced to by way of his growing friendship with the nun. Sure, he may have his hangups about those darkies but if his backs against the wall and a bunch of assholes are fuckin with him and his main source of income? He's pullin' the fookin carriage.

Amazing series so far, definitely the best show I'm watching that's currently on air.

As dgonsh references above, The Knick's strength lies in the director's accomplishments. Most episodes (besides the race riot one) don't have much action or excitement going on but Soderbergh & the score make the stakes seem so high. This show has hooked me by its execution rather than intricate or grandiose storylines that many other series rely on.

Also enjoying the discussion and excellent analysis going on in this thread. Thanks for putting me on to this show. I'm excited for the the rest of the season but anxious that I'll no longer be able to binge-watch.

and did the chinese opium den pimp actually give her ten spider bags AND a yard just to suck her toes?

sheeeit- we can do this every weekend - puffy

they're gonna be running around like gator and Vivian in a week, watch

686881, yeah she is...
Posted by StephBMore, Mon Oct-13-14 12:25 PM
and he didn't just suck her toes, i think he says something about her sitting on him while he sucks her toes...kind of like she would have sex with him too for it...which is why she was ashamed when Thackery asked her because everyone knows "suck your toes" is code for "let's have sex and i suck your toes."

But she loves the way it feels when he sexes her with cocaine on his penis. I gotta look that up to see what that does cuz man they are sprung on this show.

that the wife ended up killing the other baby. I don't know why no one saw this coming. her grieving was deep and she was literally out of her mind before that baby came to the house. it was only a matter of time.

Waiting to see how Edwards and old girl work out this pregnancy thing...I didn't think he'd be able to do it but i'm guessing now the nurse will come through to help her...

pretty good episode, can't wait for the finale.
686961, that story is sad but i can't seem to care about that doctor

He can read left to right, not just up and down. He can also kill a crew of folks by his damn self. That scene was crazy.

I was surprised Thackery was bold enough to shoot up in front of Barrow. Did I miss something? Or did Thack just not give a damn anymore?

I want to feel bad for Everett, but...can't. I was hoping halfway hoping Algernon was gonna het him. I do feel for his wife though. No woman deserves to go through all of that. Dr. Cotton is a popular character this year. Two mentions on 2 different shows in one season

687342, I almost felt for Everett but then I had to reel it back in because...

but yeah, pulling out all her teeth seems ridiculously psychotic in its own right. Them yacubians were on one in early medicine

but yeah it was dope what Wu did, but it smacked of Orientalism #Said
687254, good finale, but the 1st half of the season was much better than the 2nd
Posted by mashpg89, Sat Oct-18-14 08:59 AM
Once the severe cocaine addiction and pregnancy storylines were introduced the show faltered a bit. I was so intrigued by Thackery and his breakthroughs that his dramatic downwards spiral seemed to happen too early in the show. It kind of reminded me of the later seasons of Mad Men in which Don stays losing, yet for the first season of the show I would have preferred to see Thack at his best. By the end it was hard to root for the selfish addict he had become instead of the eccentric, trend-setting doctor of the first couple of episodes. I was excited to see him in rehab, in hopes that he'll make a triumphant return in the new Knick next season, but it looks like that addiction story isn't going away.

Really impressive first season though and as has been said before the star of this show is Soderbergh. Owen is doing an amazing job as well and deserves at least an Emmy nomination. The whole cast is strong. I enjoyed the Cleary & Sister Harriet scenes the most out of the secondary storylines.

Next season is going to be good with a new hospital and if Barrow thought Bunky was bad wait til he gets a load of Mr. Wu (still waiting on him to say "COCKSUCKA"). Overall this season was a pleasant surprise but it has the potential to be even better next season.
690573, agreed
Posted by astralblak, Mon Dec-29-14 02:16 AM
they saved it with the finally though, they almost nosed dived this into bad melodrama within two episodes after 7 joints of greatness

but at least they got rid of that gangster, who was by far the worst character on the show.

Enjoyed watching this show, and I'm definitely looking forward to another season.

The guy's editing skills are top fucking notch. Some of these scenes are masterclasses in building tension.

In terms of camerawork, what he lacks in polish he makes up for in overall scene design. Lot of smart choices in terms of how he designed scenes.

I personally thought the show got stronger as it went on. Some of the middle to late episodes were outstanding.

Acting was pretty much great across the board. The mobster character was whack, but that was about it.

Looking forward to next season.
690475, I'm on EP5. the discussion in here is a mess, LOL (SPOILERS)
Posted by astralblak, Fri Dec-26-14 02:59 PM
i guess cause it was so slow to cook, there are spoilers all over this thread and convos pertaining to episodes all out of order

Sister Harriet and Cleary are great characters. The discussion at the grave site and their beer together have been two of my favorite scenes so far.

I don't like that they're making a romance bubble with Thackery and nurse Lucy, but Clive is playing the shit out of archetypal mad genius. The scene of him and Birdy wide-eyed after another failed attempt to save the mother and child, hands bloody and all the tools still in the belly was intense.

Soderberg is putting his foot into the visual composition of the show. I remember some one saying that they think this type of story telling (long form) fits Steven's type of directing, I couldn't agree more. If the last five episodes are this good, it's easily the best thing he's ever done.

and then their is Dr. Algernon Edwards. Possibly the most dynamic character on TV. All the indignities he suffers: small, big, aversive, overt, him beating muthafuckas asses, him running the hospital in the basement for Black and Brown, his relationship with Cornelia, etc, just a fantastic character. And Andre Holland, the actor, is playing the shit out it.

Herman and Inspector Jacob are scum. I like how Cornelia handled Jacob's after the house visit.

and LOFL @ Danny Hoch playing Bunky. It's over the top and his face has always been strange and punchable, but it works

and COT DAMN at the syphilis eating the nose of Thackery's ex. I immediately did my Googles. All that shit was real upto the operation!

i still can't believe they would operate without gloves and touch folk directly with all types of sickness.

as a period piece it works. as a piece on the evolution of science and medicine it works. as a piece of social and urban history it works. as a drama it works.

Can't wait to finish these next five.

also the scene of selling the X-Ray machine, down right ridiculous and comedic.

and the scene of Algernon's mom with Thack behind her with the belt was all types of strange and wrong.

Thackery wild for the dime-piece Asian sex worker inspiration. Birdie is a cool little character. He gives the show something beyond what the other characters are doing

even in loss I can't stand Gallengers wife...

and Yikes as rapey creepLife soon-to-be father-in-law.

these are some really original characters:
-Black man who has to create an underground medic center to allow his gifts to flourish, while dealing with northern racism, and he also like to throw hands for the fuck of it (really to deal with the society he's in)
-Catholic nun who drinks and provides abortions
-Aristocratic daughter who leads a hospital, ain't afraid to get her hands dirty, stands up to men, yet will ultimately be forced into house-wifization
etc

so good, and yeah I'm'a kept talking to myself in here
690509, RE: ep8. the weak link IMO
Posted by astralblak, Sat Dec-27-14 03:23 PM
the first 10min with Clive portraying Thackery falling into the depths of his addiction was masterful, everything was mediocre.

the exchange between nekid Algernon and Cordelia was cringe worthy, and for as much as this show has shaped some very nuanced and original characters out of fictive historical archetypes, the Orientalism found at the brothel in Chinatown and Mr. Wu is just bad.

I see they are building up Birdy to leave once he finds out Thackery is smashing Lucy, but it's so telegraphed I hope it unfolds differently.

as far I Gallenger and his wife go, I can't fux with them.

line of the episode though was PigFuck inspector yelling at the typhoid lady outside the courtroom.
702670, Engaging tv.

Great mix of scifi-horror-period-melodrama. Seeing Soderbergh's effect on this and Fukunaga's on True Detective makes you wish for more single directors taking on unique tv.
