672761, Which is the better show - SCANDAL or HOUSE OF CARDS?
Posted by Wordsmith, Tue Feb-18-14 02:24 PM
Just finished a binge watch of HOC season 2 and I must ask - WHICH is the better show. Here's some criteria for you - writing, directing, storyline/script, acting, character development, cinematography, etc.

Serious discussion please.........
672762, You're joking, right?

House of Cards has its bullshits moments, but it's much better than Scandal. HoC has much better acting, writing, and ideas.

You know...this isn't even close right. But I'm game.

Writing: HoC Beau Willimon and the writers clearly have a distinct vision they want for the show and are given the leeway to implement it. Having a blueprint from the original BBC show helps. The dialogue is snappy and I dig a lot of the foreshadowing that takes place.

Storyline/Script: Same as above. Some things stretch believability, specifically the Peter Russo "thing", but I find most of what happens very plausible. Also, while reading news articles about our Congress and all the procedural machinations and vote trading that occurs, I tend to believe HoC gets closer to what actually happens in Congress than other fictional works.

Acting: HoC Is this even a question? Scandal is a melodrama disguised as a political thriller with matching melodramatic acting. Every episode Robin Wright and Kevin Space put on a clinic. Not to mention Corey Stoll and Michael Kelly.

Character Development: HoC Scandal writers come up with a crazy scenario for each of their characters and throw it on the screen. They change the characters to suit whatever crazy storlyine they want to develop. It's so freakin' absurd. The HoC characters arrived fully formed. We knew what they were from the jump. Although they haven't exactly shown "growth" in the past two seasons, they are so fully realized that I don't need to see "growth" per se.

Cinematography: HoC This show is shot beautifully. I think the tone David Fincher set in the first two episodes carried well throughout the show. It gives it a cinematic quality.

All that said, people like what they like. I happen to think Scandal is a terrible, terrible show. Some people think HoC is overrated. There's no accounting for taste. Scandal just ain't my cup of tea. I have learned to accept that.
672783, LMFAO.

this place is becoming a parody of itself. yes PTP, The Lesson and GD
672846, So true. The boards are turning to crap.

It's kinda like the last few seasons of the Office. A complete parody of itself. Even the sports board. This is the only board I really enjoy anymore, and topics like this one make me lose faith lol.

are you serious?

man come the fuck on....

672966, Scandal
Posted by colonelk, Thu Feb-20-14 01:54 PM
House of Cards is without a doubt the more polished show. Better directing, lighting, cinematography, sound. But it's infuriatingly self-serious, constantly pretending it MEANS something and has something powerful to say about politics in America.

But in fact it is ludicrous camp. I'd much rather watch a show that realizes it is ludicrous camp than one that loudly insists that it is an important show.

672967, I'm only 1/2 way thru the 1st season of HoC. When does this happen?
Posted by jigga, Thu Feb-20-14 02:13 PM
>infuriatingly self-serious, constantly pretending it MEANS

>
>But in fact it is ludicrous camp.

672974, which part?
Posted by colonelk, Thu Feb-20-14 03:14 PM
The self-seriousness or the ridiculousness?
672981, Either or both
Posted by jigga, Thu Feb-20-14 04:31 PM
>The self-seriousness or the ridiculousness?

Peter Russo just went to his first AA meeting

The previous ep w/ the brick through the window was a little peculiar

Just wondering if I should expect stuff more along those lines from here on out or if you thought it was pure camp from the jump. The only problem I've had w/ it so far is Spacey talking to the camera too much (or maybe even at all)
672986, It gets more and more ludicrous as it goes, unquestionably.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Feb-20-14 05:15 PM
Even diehards who love it should be able to acknowledge this.
672993, Good to know, thanks

672976, RE: Scandal
Posted by kwemos, Thu Feb-20-14 03:32 PM
Scandal doesn't know it's ludicrous camp, and neither do its fans.
672984, i disagree.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Feb-20-14 04:58 PM
Shonda knows. and a good portion of the fanbase knows based on the conversations i've had w/several ppl who watch. yes, there is that portion that doesn't seem to know. but i think most of us who watch know the show is a prime-time soap opera.
673000, RE: i disagree.
Posted by kwemos, Thu Feb-20-14 07:49 PM
To act like every scandal fan is like you, is bullshit. There are plenty that genuinely believe it's a top notch show and Kerry should be awarded for her crying.
673060, not as many as you seem to think.
Posted by SoWhat, Fri Feb-21-14 04:13 PM
in my experience those ppl are few in #. i don't know any personally though i know dozens of Scandal fans.

i watch both knowing this

but HoC fans are the most incredibly unaware group that dont realize they are watching a soap opera
scandal fans relish that it is

HoC is melodrama not soap opera. As Amoldovar once said, soap opera is melodrama done badly. Things can be extreme, over the top, and serious as melodrama, soap opera thrives off the campiness
673644, Oh this show is thriving off of campiness

Hipsters are the ones who "barely watch tv"
Deigning to only watch "particular" shows of "quality"

Y'all are judging the shit out of two tv shows that are not as different as tall really want and wish them to be to try to have some misguided attempt to superior taste in television watching

Get that straight
And please for the live of television try to gain some damn perspective and awareness
Sheesh
It's embarrassing ...for y'all

Some people think WWE is real. A show is not what its dumbest audience member thinks it is.
673017, That's not what you said though.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Feb-21-14 01:58 AM
You said Scandal wasn't self-aware (it is) and that its fans didn't know how trashy it was (they do).
673061, i watch both b/c they're OTT.
Posted by SoWhat, Fri Feb-21-14 04:14 PM
LOL

if i wanted to watch a realistic portrayal of life in the WH and Congress i'd watch CSPAN or documentaries.
672985, the deeper i get into season 2 of HOC
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Feb-20-14 04:59 PM
the more i agree that the show is the 'thinking mans' version of Scandal. LOL

it has fewer 'OH SHIT' moments per episode than Scandal. and that's the main difference between them.
673052, but the "thinking" is just superficial
Posted by colonelk, Fri Feb-21-14 02:38 PM
It's like eating Aged White Cheddar Pirate's Booty and looking down on somebody eating Cheetos.

673065, why do folks like yall
Posted by astralblak, Fri Feb-21-14 04:27 PM
keep denying that HoC has SUPERIOR acting, by miles and LOOKS fantastic. the lighting and composition of many scenes are great and compliment the plot/scene very well.

fuck all that thinking man's bullshit. those two things alone make HoC better if yall are pretending the writing and plots are equal

673066, *pats head*
Posted by SoWhat, Fri Feb-21-14 05:02 PM
i like both shows. i like HOC a little better. and i agree that HOC seems to have higher production values.
673662, LOL at *seems*

>i like both shows. i like HOC a little better. and i agree

673666, To me, the only real difference between the two is that one is
Posted by ZooTown74, Sun Mar-02-14 04:29 PM
aimed more at women than the other

Well, fine, that, and one show spends more time on political wheeling and dealing than the other

Both have their share of ridiculous OMG SHOCK LOL! moments, though, so the comparison isn't as off as we might believe

It's just that one's *perceived* as a more "pop" show than the other

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Why niggas be trying to prove Internet hypotheses?
673669, Agreed.
Posted by SoulHonky, Sun Mar-02-14 06:22 PM
I also think Scandal (from what little I've seen) owns its ridiculousness more, although that might be more of a reaction to the critical acclaim that HoC gets. But it was funny watching Twitter during season 1; every Hollywood writer I followed heaped praise on it while most every political writer laughed about how ridiculous and silly it was.
673832, Yep
Posted by lfresh, Tue Mar-04-14 10:59 PM
Folks in GD and here didn't believe me when I said HoC viewers are the most unaware viewers

But hey let's see them try to distance their TV habits
