668244, The amount of writers lowers my expectations
Posted by SoulHonky, Wed Dec-11-13 02:00 PM
Joby Harold (Awake) adapted the novel, then Steve Kloves (Harry Potter) worked on it , then Christopher McQuarrie (Usual Suspects), and then Tim Kring (Heroes), and then Jez Butterworth (Fair Game), and finally Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

Visually it looks amazing and Blount looks kind of kick ass but I'm expecting another middling Cruise flick. Side note: I'd really love to see Tom play a villain sometime soon.
668246, I'm obviously there for CROOZE...
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Dec-11-13 02:14 PM
... but the trailer is kind of humorless. Especially considering the original title.

Still, I'm there. CROOZE 4 LIFE.

First off see this on the biggest, loudest screen possible and make sure it's 3D.

But this is easily the best thing TC has been in for a minute. Funny, action packed and visually pleasing from beginning to end.

Can't wait to see this again.

*edit*: After watching this movie, they really should've kept "All You Need is Kill" as the original title.

680016, Emily Blunt needs her own sci-fi franchise not now but RIGHT NOW
Posted by jigga, Tue Jun-03-14 04:14 PM
Sci-fi, action, comic-book (is it too late to replace Gadot?), horror, som'n

Saw an IMAX 3D screening & might've sat a bit too close but still dug the action for the most part. Really dug how it didn't shy away from going dark at times yet still had plenty comic relief.

Props to Cruise, Liman & McQuarrie too but between this & Looper I'm ready for that Blunt to get a boost. Really only got a tease of her potential here but it's clear she's got the chops.

680189, yes on replacing Gadot!..lol

As I said in the locked thread (oops my bad), this is a strong summer movie.

Great action sequences, great acting. It's the right balance of strong story that still doesn't take itself so seriously that it doesn't have fun with the premise. Yes it's essentially a sci-fi Groundhog Day, but really well done, and way better than Source Code.

I would put this above Days of Future Past, and next to Cap 2 as the best action/adventure film I've seen this year.

680198, Vintage Cruise
Posted by SoulHonky, Fri Jun-06-14 12:53 PM
Charming, funny, kicking ass when he needs to. I haven't been wild about Cruise's output of late so this is my favorite movie of his this century (I'm sure fans of Collateral and Ghost Protocol will disagree; I don't count Tropic Thunder since it was a small role.)

This should be (yet another) star turn for Emily Blunt but knowing Hollywood she'll still struggle to find could mainstream material.

Definitely recommend this one. It's not groundbreaking but it's a very entertaining summer blockbuster and I won't be surprised if it is my favorite action movie of the year (although Dawn of Planet of the Apes looks pretty awesome.) Like any sci-fi film like this, there are a few "Wait, why didn't they..." but this is so entertaining that they didn't irk me at all.
680201, Crooze Control. 4/5 stars on the Summer Blockbuster Scale.

PROS:

-Uh, Tom Cruise. Duh. No, really. Seriously: has there ever been a more likable actor in the history of the business? Yes, he’s in that “he’s basically the same guy in every movie” class, but to *me*, those are the best actors for movies like this. That’s what character actors are for. The only guys I can think of on this level are Denzel and Will Smith, though Jason Bou- uh, I mean, Matt Damon, isn’t far behind. Crooze seems to be the only genuine Movie Star who never really lost his shine, and that fact is evident here.

It’s no great revelation that he hits all of his usual notes here: he’s charming, funny, earnest, etc, at all the appropriate times, as always. None of this is done in a way that truly stands out, but who cares? Cruise is Cruise and we all know what that entails, and frankly, that’s the appeal. I will say he absolutely pulls off one element to his character that we’re simply not used to seeing. If you saw Knight and Day, just imagine that guy has a twin who got screwed out of all the machismo genes, and you have the guy in this movie. It’s kind of refreshing to see the Crooze charm juxtaposed with what we get here. It’s refreshing.

-Blunt. She’s the glue that holds it all together, both in terms of her character and performance. I cringe when thinking of other actresses who could have been tapped for this movie were it helmed by other directors. Let’s just say, thank god/science/Buddha/Vishnu/whomever that, say Michael Bay didn’t get his grubby ass mitts on this, because her character would have been the first and biggest element to get screwed up here. An actress such as, say, Michelle Rodriguez would have ruined this role by beating us over the head with her usual “I’m a super tough chick who can hang with the boys” schtick. Blunt finesses her way through with a vulnerable stoicism that nicely offsets Crooze.

-The supporting cast. It seems the writers had a lot of fun casting a motley crew for J unit. I had a blast with every single one of them.

CON: (SPOILERISH)

-I’m sorry, I genuinely loved this movie overall, but PLEASE, oh PLEASE, can we get some alien/machine oppressors who AREN’T little more than a hive-minded group of, giant, spindly, robot squids? Can we get some fucking sentience, some smarts, some character, with a decent motive for once?

It can be argued that the best villains in superhero movies often outshine their more noble counterparts (Spider Man 2, The Dark Knight, Thor, etc). The ‘Alien/Machine Oppressor/etc” genre is the exact opposite. By and large, the aliens/machines are nothing more than a mindless or hive-minded force with little character or interesting motive. Skynet made for an awful villain if we’re being honest.
The Matrix had the good fortune of Agent Smith, but the Sentinels were awful. The Avengers had Loki, but the Chitari offered nothing but fodder for our heroes to beat up.

Sometimes, the story doesn’t really necessitate that we get some meat on the invader/oppressor side. Shit, I felt that the way Battle: LA was told, it was wholly unnecessary. The entire movie amounted to found footage of an invasion and the military response. The motive (our water) wasn’t great, though not the absurd notion people thought it was IMO. ID4 was similar. The Avengers didn’t really ‘need’ the Chitari to be anything more than mindless, generic video game henchmen.

Still, I find myself growing bored and annoyed with the completely uninspired offering of alien and machine overlords. It’s high time we got an interesting invader.

That said, I’m intrigued by a few things: SPOILERS.

-I wonder if the “reset” days spawned off alternate timelines of their own.

-I wonder if, at the end, Cruise getting the Omega’s power meant he’s stuck living out the same day forever, or does he now have control?
Both of those elements scream tentpole fodder if you ask me.

IMO it stands up well with CA:TWS as the best blockbuster of the year thus far. It doesn’t have the dead weight of Godzilla (here’s looking at you, Kick-Ass, and your worthless storyline in that movie) nor the overly convoluted waste of X-Men (So much to love about it, yet still so much to dislike). My gripe about the aliens aside, they do a great job of pacing the movie and moving pieces from point A to point B without getting mired in dense extrapolation. Given the subject matter, that’s a real feat if you ask me.
680226, It's a scientology movie
Posted by louie_depalma, Sat Jun-07-14 07:22 PM
What do you expect? Alien overlords and past lives come with the package.

680232, I didn't miss anything, that was your main gripe
Posted by louie_depalma, Sun Jun-08-14 12:19 AM
But this movie doesn't get made without it. Will Smith and Tom Cruise are on that. oblivion, war of the worlds, vanilla sky, after earth, independence day.
680234, No, you missed it completely and this confirms it.
Posted by Cold Truth, Sun Jun-08-14 12:42 AM
I'm not going to bother trying to converse with you on where, why, and how you're missing it, but have at it.
680344, A halo movie would solve all of these problems
Posted by select_from_where, Mon Jun-09-14 01:01 PM
I still for the love of god have no idea why a prequel movie is not being made.

The cannon of the halo series is so damn deep, and incorporates some CRAZY themes (repetition of time, the pain of evolution, the irony of an alien religion)

Microsoft must be beating hollywood off with a stick, because that would be a Sci-fi EPIC in every sense of the word.
680348, There's irony in aliens having religion?
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Jun-09-14 02:03 PM
Not to go super OT on this, but I've got an idea what you mean by that and to me it's always been a weird conclusion to jump to.

What do you mean by that, exactly?
681194, In Halo, the human perspective on religion doenst exist
Posted by select_from_where, Tue Jun-24-14 02:56 PM
BUT the aliens are religious fanatics, but the deity they worship is the
forerunners, who are not godly creatures but in fact mortal. in the cannon the humans are to be the next forerunners. which is ironic in itself. lots of parody and themes to dissect in a movie trilogy.

Dug the fact that the rules were established early on, and everything was fairly straight-forward. I was concerned going in that there would be convoluted logic which would make the action hard to follow, but that turned out to not be the case.

CROOZE and Emily Blunt were great.

Highly, highly entertaining. Shame it's going to be marked down as a "bomb" because of the weepy cancer kids movie.

Crooze killed it.

Sweaty Emily Blunt looked good.

Both tank deaths cracked me up so much (the rolling under one and the one with him running in the battlefield).

The time-loop explanation was somewhat believable and not some old bullshit.

But I wondered about all the alternate timelines too. Like, there's probably about 750 timelines where Full Metal Bitch gotta deal with a dead Crooze and each one she has to just hope he makes it in a parallel universe somewhere. That's gotta suck.
680212, Enjoyed it....good, not great. Crooze and Blunt were on point.

Dem visuals were good, especially at the end.

I was drunk so that helped.

It's not going to be the best movie of the summer or anything like that, but worth a ticket. The action was solid overall but there weren't any specific jaw-dropping fights.
680218, Really enjoyable film. Funny as hell in some moments.

Cruise is always reliable but Blunt was a surprise (I didn't think she could pull it off based on the trailers). well-done pace and editing helped. 3-D was immersive, and I'm a big opponent of that effect in general (The Hobbit 1&2, Gravity and Pacific Rim are the only movies I've seen in 3D the last two years).

the premise falls apart quickly, but it's entertaining within the moment. I've already forgotten most of the movie, however.
680465, way above my expectations
Posted by Rolo_Tomasi, Tue Jun-10-14 05:25 PM
I almost never go and see action movies - i just don't dig them. But on the strength of the reviews I could tell there was something different from most other blockbusters.

I tend to avoid Cruise movies, i just find him dull and i've being dragged by different dates to see Mi4 and the very mediocre and dull Jack Reacher.

I like Jez Butterworth's stage plays and McQuarrie is a talented screenwriter but I guess they had good source material for this too.

All the explosions and special effects were done with aplomb but again monotonous and almost boring but the story telling wasn't jarring and like an earlier poster said the rules were established at the beginning - because of this the film's pacing worked.

Blunt was okay, she could have had some better dialogue.

Where were the funny parts? I don't remember laughing once.

I was glad it was far better than Source Code which is what the trailer made it look like.

The leads are great...vintage Cruise and Blunt pulls off her role extremely well. The device is established early (loved how they poked fun at it...a lot more humor than expected which was a welcome addition) and then you're just in for a great ride w some tremendous visuals to boot. Just really well done in all facets....the script and directing don't over-think it, just allowing for the strengths of the movie to really shine. Really, really well done.

Such a shame this didn't get the box office numbers it deserved. The first trailer is one of the best I've ever seen, the sound editing still reverberates in my head...this is not the end...

surprisingly.

i don't fool w/ cruise like that. and i was skeptical of the premise (aliens + groundhogs day) when it came out.

but they really did a hell of a job pulling it off.

what was great was that, as the movie went on, i thought of it less as groundhog's day and more as an immersive, story-driven video game. especially when blunt would murk his character and make him respawn.

and i think he might have got the draws on a side mission.

i went in w/ low expectations and ended up very pleasantly surprised.

peace & blessings,

but since then, I heard so many good things about it. So I decided to check it out when it came on DVD. It was quite good. What doomed this movie at the box office was the marketing, the generic @$$ title, and the fact it was a Tom Cruise Sci Fi film. People probably wondered how it differed from something like "Oblivion" which was a sci fi movie just previous to this one. Not to say Cruise was bad in it. He was quite good doing his "Tom Cruise" thing. But I think people dismissed it off the bat whereas they would have given it a chance if it were a different star.

With a better title, marketing campaign and a different star, people would have checked for it and it would have been a massive hit IMO.

Is there a feminist or class lens to view this movie through? The woman sacrificing herself hundreds of times for Cruise to self actualize and become savior was interesting. The PR officer being demoted to private and taking that as a slight only to be confronted by a group of hapless ne'er do wells who he must lead.

America has imported more warlord theocracy from Afghanistan than it has exported democracy.
748645, fam this movie aged so fucking well.

this has to be the best sci fi movie in the last however many years.

it was generally well received but still feels vastly underrated.
748649, If its on, I stop and watch it. I never do that, but this movie is always

Rogue one
dune
arrival
Interstellar
Ready player one (one personal fav idc idc)

I’m not a super sci head but I think there are some consensus picks in there and I enjoyed it more than all of em.
748686, it's not CONSTANTLY on streaming, and the MCU went OD shortly after

As well as Cruise's own M:I franchise, plus it's core conceit is uniquely wedged between soft and hard sci-fi. It's a very comedic movie about an amazingly serious predicament, with an intensely video game like structure that I could see undermining the weight of said very serious problem for whatever reason people often (and often, I s'pose, rightly) find game narratives sophomoric compared to even the silliest of regular movies, books or whatever.

But if the right critique of this movie that explains why it can't transcend cult status (not that it needs to, of course) I haven't found it yet. It's probably the most explicitly charismatic Cruise has been since he quit dramas, and Emily Blunt has never been sexier nor more surprising.

Maybe it's as simple as all the mech-frames, which might either recall the worst bits of Matrix Revolutions or just imply deeply nerdy animé-profile-on-Twitter vibes people don't want to make time for, lol.

748698, I think it was pure Cruise Fatigue at the time.

I think this was around jumping on couches with oprah time.

I think Cruise being back in top form this movie will be "discovered" again for like the 3 time.

It's in my top 5 sci-fi movies of the last 10 years and my top action sci-fi movie.

Oblivion came out the previous year and was not so good (or that's how I remember it.)

The Orpah thing was like 8 years earlier - I think that was over as a criticism.

748702, i still haven't finished Oblivion, been meaning to

love the idea and indifferent on Cruise really. Just can never sit long enough to get through it. But Edge of Tomorrow was good sci-fi action. I enjoyed it.
748705, I think Cruise was in a slump from like 2003 - 2015. Hear me out
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Jul-24-23 01:27 PM
I think his first peak/run was like Jerry Mcguire (1996) to Minority Report (2002) then he started sinking with Last Samurai (2003) and bottom out with Valkyrie (2008) or Knight and Day (2010) and Rock of Ages (2012) and Jack Reacher (2012) but the seeds of his return were already planted with Mission: Impossible and sticking with the franchise and killing it by Rogue Nation (2015).

Of course there are all sorts of outliers in that description but I think the general trajectory of his career was still a bit iffy in 2014.

I think today he is at the top of his game even in a shitty theatrical climate.
