It was sold on it's DVD release on the premise of "it was shelved because of Columbine." So it had this myth of "You gotta see this movie that was so hardcore, they couldn't release it," which turned in to word of mouth, and then well, you know the rest.
This happens all the time. It's like saying you love the B-side or the album cut more than a single. It's a hipster's wet dream.
