Sorry, I didn't see that you posted this already. I just made a separate post about it, so I'll just paste it here. I'm excited. I looked at some of the liveblogs and twitter feeds.

- They showed the first episode. I hope it leaks

- A look at avatar beginnings. We meet the first avatar, Avatar Wan who dates back 10,000 years before Korra. He is voiced by Steven Yuen (from The Walking Dead). They showed some pics of the concept art, which was nice.

-Bumi and Kya (Tenzin's siblings) will show up.

-A trailer is out; some good stuff in there. The owl from the spirit library makes a return and he has a run-in with one of Tenzin's girls.

-More animal hybrids! Avatar Wan's familiar is a cat-deer named Mula.

I was annoyed that Korra is still being an impatient brat considering all of the shit that happened last season. That should have been a big "I told you so" from Tenzin and I feel she should have been slightly humbled from it.

Nonetheless, the potential civil war between the north & south water tribes, the spirits, and the first avatar will be real interesting.
661181, it seems like a soft reset in some ways.

they're playing fast and loose w/ what's being acknowledged. all character development from S1 is out the window. but the plot details remain. also they retconned Korra's upbringing too.

i dig that korra is hella hardheaded and very different from aang.
661270, I was just gonna say, Korra's kinduva an asshole.

- is this aubrey plaza's first VA experience? she's godawful.
- aang's a bad dad
- writing felt really lazy in this episode after a good opener.
- the fight was straight piff. korra out there flexing.
662039, yeh the fight was the best part
Posted by araQual, Tue Sep-24-13 10:49 PM
the family problems are surprisingly earnest and dramatic even for Avatar standards. the bickering bw siblings was kinda fun, but learning that Aang was kind of a meh father to all of his kids cept Tenzin shouldnt be too surprising. i think the point they been tryin to drive home sofar this season is that the Avatar, whether a child or adult, is mostly alone and has too big of a responsibility to divide his or her attention among too many different ppl.

So Korra comes from 'royalty' huh? That's a pretty big retcon on her backstory. You'd think they woulda mentioned that SOMETIME during the 1st season....
662706, RE: I'm glad they didn't drag out the betrayal story line too long.
Posted by afrobandit, Tue Oct-01-13 10:51 AM
The writers probably wanted to wait to reveal that info. Im pretty sure they have more coming.
663129, oh look korra's wrong again. For a whole episode.

Mako: Hey, I'm a police officer now. There is literally no reason for you not to believe me. And I'm telling you that I just saw two fire benders running away from the scene of the crime with the detonator in their hand.

Considering the situation between your father and your uncle, it's safe to say things aren't what they seem. You should look into it.

Korra: tl:dr. Water tribe.

smh
663340, Dude.... I don't get her at all.
Posted by spades, Mon Oct-07-13 11:36 AM
I mean, season 1 I got her being such a dick, but how is it possible that she hasn't learned ANYTHING from all that?
663132, what's with the dip in quality this season? seems a bit aimless
Posted by araQual, Fri Oct-04-13 09:06 PM
and i'm strangely uninvested in the story OR the characters. Bolin's crazy gf sidestory was already played out but they keep milking it for more for some reason (it was *kinda* funny the first few times, but now not so much).

i mean on the one hand i dig the post-Aang world-building and the slow but sure construction and deconstruction of his extended family. but at this point i'm so annoyed by Korra as a character and the story doesn't seem to be as interesting (and some of the characterisations in general seem a tad off), i'm wanting them to go BACK a lil more to the OG Avatar world and fill in some post-Book 3 gaps from then to now. it's about time to fill us in on the middle of this sprawling story.

Varek has been pretty consistently hilarious.

and i KNOW, Korra isn't Aang-like. or even Aang-esque. but when it comes to overall personality, she's a thick-headed brat who has no deductive reasoning skills and despite everything she's gone through in Book 1, has only sofar acquired the ability to summon the Avatar State at will and use it like a toy. for Aang it was always used sparingly, and when it WAS activated, u got that epic feeling of awwwwwsheeet, sumthn cool is about to happen (most of the time he never got to inflict mass carnage, but just him GLOWING was enough). i feel like Korra, as a more modern-day interpretation of the Avatar, is largely materialistic with little to no spiritual side. i'll give the writers the benefit of the doubt that they built the world this way on purpose, complete with an updated Avatar persona to go with it (possibly as a reflection of our own modern times that also lack the spiritual touch).

i usually like it when a show like this concentrates on the dialogue and character interactions, but this seasons been kinda painful in that regard. not as tightly written as Book 1. but damn if it all doesn't LOOK gorgeous as fuck. i'll keep watchin cos this team has rarely stumbled within the Avatar universe (from Aang til now). but i am pretty much over Korra as a character, could just be Janet Varney's performance of it, but i mostly just end up with 'meh'.

V.
663347, i think watching this, you have to be aware of your age
Posted by hardware, Mon Oct-07-13 01:54 PM
Korra is just a hard-headed teenager
which i think is great. its clearly building up to her understanding her responsibility of Avatar. I think framing it up against the turmoil of her tribe is a great bit of internal conflict
663348, plus adding the boyfriend
Posted by lfresh, Mon Oct-07-13 01:58 PM

Posted by spades, Mon Oct-07-13 03:34 PM
>Korra is just a hard-headed teenager

I would've thought she'd be a least a LITTLE less hard-headed.
663431, the first season was more about bending and accepting responsibility
Posted by hardware, Mon Oct-07-13 10:37 PM
now she has to deal with the responsibility.

she passed the interview, now the actual job starts

it was easier when it was Amon, a clear right and wrong. but now she has to deal with two opposing sides that are no more right than the other, which also happen to be family

old korra probably would have just fought the north straight away
663352, the problem isn't what they're doing. the story idea so far is pretty sound.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Oct-07-13 02:30 PM
its the fact that the writers suck at executing it.
ex: i think it's a great idea to make korra a hardheaded teenager. but there's a difference between hardheaded and the fucking idiot she's written as. i don't think they understand that.

disclaimer: i'm operating under the assumption that they're basically redoing everything except the who, where and what of season 1. because a lot of the character development this season has been a retread of stuff that's already happened.
663525, ok, so ep05 was WAYYYYYYYY WAY better
Posted by araQual, Tue Oct-08-13 07:37 PM
more thoughts in a bit. but the shit finally came together sumthn lovely.

663864, This season is off to a slow start, but I trust the writers
Posted by slp_igneous1, Sun Oct-13-13 12:07 AM
Korra reminds me of a lot of adolescents. This episode was a nice development. I'm glad they've gotten out of the city. I was much more interested in the sub-plot with Tenzin and family. Part of what made the original series was the fact that they spent a lot of time visiting other places.
664086, VARRICK! u sly dog.
Posted by araQual, Wed Oct-16-13 07:37 PM
this seasons been pretty...i dunno, kinda adultish in tone? lotsa sexual innuendo. smooching. jabs at showbiz and celebrity. breakdown of who does what in wartime. the politics and backstabbing involved. the cant-trust-anyone thing. kind of a iffy start but pretty impressed with the last couple of eps. should shape up nicely.

664298, Amazing story on the first avatar!
Posted by slp_igneous1, Sat Oct-19-13 04:15 AM
U get the feeling they were dying to tell that one. I thought the animation was beautiful, too. This episode, to me, could have been earlier in the season. This has been Korra's problem all along. She's never been a spiritual person, so she was never a good avatar before. She was so opinionated, she was unable to be balanced. Now that she's gone through this, I would expect to see some growth and maturity from her. It's interesting how Korra's mistake was similar to Wan's, in that she tried to help, without understanding the spirit world. I wonder if her uncle realizes the consequences.
664342, REally? It wasn't bad, but for the origin story of the first avatar
Posted by calminvasion, Sat Oct-19-13 09:44 PM
Basically the explanation of the entire universe... I thought it was just ok. Best episode of this season, but I don't know. Shit make that a season.
664362, thought it was really beautiful the way they did it....
Posted by araQual, Sun Oct-20-13 05:24 AM
...but ur right. i mean a two-ep arc kinda covers majority of it but i woulda loved to seen it play out in a real-time prequel.
still, thats the only real complaint to be had in an otherwise cool, funny, somewhat deep origin of everything (real throwback to the Aang universe vibe).

V.
664364, I really think it was a great ep, but I agree the story was better
Posted by slp_igneous1, Sun Oct-20-13 08:58 AM
Than Korra's immediate story. They could have made a great season of the origins. I think this one was a nod to the original series and it's lore:
-the age of the lion turtles and their protection of humans
-the original conflict between humans and spirits
-the origins of bending
-the avatar as a bridge to the spirit world
-background on how/why the spirit is re-incarnated

All of it is enough to have its own series. I like how they showed the parallel between Wan and mistakes, being manipulated by the spirits. Now that the entire crew has been separated, it will be interesting to see how the writers bring everything back together.
664542, loved it

such a stark contrast b/w the two shows, and now i see how deliberate it was. but damn i didnt realise how much i missed the Aang-verse til the Korra double ep.

666461, there isnt a Dark Avatar
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Nov-18-13 01:15 PM
(edit: well there shouldn't be. at least as i understand how the show works)

Vatu never had to hold all the other elements like Rava did before it bonded w/ Wan. so Unalaq was basically a vessel for Vatu to go terrorize the physical world. rather than actually bonding with a person like Rava/Wan.

it was dope though. i've been watching so much wrestling lately that when Giant Blue Korra scooped up Unalaq/Vatu on her shoulder, i thought she was gonna give him an Attitude Adjustment.

but yeah an actual Dark Avatar would've been really cool.
666499, some thoughts now that the season is over (finale spoilers)
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Nov-18-13 04:30 PM
since it hasnt aired on TV yet...

- overall i really liked this season. everything from Episode 6 to the end was lights out. the first eps never bad, just frustrating because of how the characters were placed in order to tell the story. i really think a lot of the criticism on the show is greatly overblown.

- the scene where Unalaq rips (spiritbends?) Rava out of Korra's mouth, then beats the Avatar legacy out of Rava is the single dopest thing to EVER happen in the Avatar franchise. that scene was hard as fuck. i know folks in the fanbase are disappointed about the legacy connection being gone but i think it's a great and bold move for her character. reconnecting would be a copout.

- on the Dark Avatar. i already said i don't think there will be a Dark Avatar cycle. but i do think that would've been something interesting to explore from a moral/ethical standpoint. how do you guide a child who is supposed to be the prodigy of darkness basically? on the other hand, i think the idea of a Dark Avatar feels too much like something out of a fan fiction.

- Waterbending is OP as fuck.

- not really sure what to make of the human/spirit world connection. there's a lot of potential there.

- the creators have already said that Book 3 is coming sooner than later so i'm very excited. i hope the 3rd season keeps the main party together for most of it, and focuses on Fire/Earthbending. it'd do a lot for Mako & Bolin (who were surprisingly useful in the final 4 eps!) plus those elements have barely been touched on in this show anyway.
