btw...do ALL the Bat books suck now? DC just doesn't want me to read their stuff anymore it seems...i can't think of one DC book i like...
650613, Inc does not suck. Batman kinda does. And Vertigo is back.
Posted by JRennolds, Sun May-19-13 07:01 AM
Inc is done. Playing wait and see with Year Zero; might drop Batman after/during.
But Vertigo is coming back so DC has that going for them.

seriously this was one of the best books latter-day DC put out before The New Foolishness came up
combines the old 6o's tropes with modern storylines and themes perfectly, but it's pretty intense and not a light read in the slightest
650697, oh man, anyone who overlooked that one should fix that immediately

Trades are $5 single issues .99

Love this series. Probably one of my top monthly comics. The shit this woman drives men to do is wild.

Going up against demons for her? Must be some bomb stuff between them legs. If you wanted to check it out noes the chance.

650955, Yo!
Posted by buckshot defunct, Tue May-21-13 10:51 PM
Be careful in there. I've found having a virtual comic shop at your finger tips 24 hours a day can have its pitfalls. I'd go into more detail but I'd better get started on these 99¢ Kamandi comics if I'm going to read all 50 of them

But I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the app. I use it a ton, I think a few others here use it too but we haven't talked about it in much depth lately
651125, It's the best thing ever to play catch up
Posted by Paps_Smear, Thu May-23-13 07:39 PM
If you read a series in trades this is the way to go. No real life space is taken up and most of the time it's sooooo much cheaper.

The collector in me still gets physical copies but for example Invincible is a series I got into so late I'm not trying to own all those trades so I started going the digital route and am very satisfied.

Now I still collect the fuck out of comics but this is how I roll when I wanna check out back issues for cheap.
650878, No, there has not been a bad issue of Fatale.
Posted by lonesome_d, Tue May-21-13 12:28 PM
I felt like there should have been more exposition of who Booker is and why he is that way, but it's still comics gold.

Looking forward to getting back to the 'main' story - 'main' in quotes because Nicholas has gotten the least screen time out of all the players.
650879, Dream Merchant #1 didn't exactly rock me.
Posted by lonesome_d, Tue May-21-13 12:31 PM
I'm a big Edmondson (Jake Ellis, Activity) fan, but this felt a lot... I dunno, sloppier than I expect from him. And not just the typos; the story itself and especially Anne's involvement seemed a little rushed or something. I was excited for this one, an author I really like taking on a different genre, but felt let down. I'd give it a B- to start but out of faith in the author will give #2 a shot before I jump ship.

i loved johns trotting out every major element of his run and cuban b'ing the shit out of war of the green lanterns. he should have stopped his run after blackest night, and he seems to have realized that, because his last issue was a celebration of the sinestro corps war, blackest night, and the 9 corps, which will be his legacy, and it's a good one. A+
651066, I love the character work in the Hal/Carol ending
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Thu May-23-13 10:26 AM
-Batman telling him his kid is beautiful after bringing Martin Jordan II to the Watchtower/Hall of Justice
-Sinestro taking the Bookkeeper's job on Oa and admitting Hal is the greatest ever
-Thaal allowing Parallax to enter him (no homo) and being the possessor and not the possessee (I called this one a while back; Sinestro is above possession by Parallax)
-Hal and Carol still wearing their rings into old age
-Sinestro telling Hal they never stopped being friends
-Ganthet and Sayd being spared while the other Gs got their asses blown off
-"Secrets don't taste as good as ratwaffle cheese." (c) Fleezy F. Baby

just so much good character work there, that made the book for me

Posted by buckshot defunct, Wed May-22-13 11:02 PM
That was a fucking comic book!

That page right after the job interview??? Damn you, Benson!!! Bonafide OH SHIT SON moment!

Murdock is scared shitless and it feels so real. I gotta credit Samnee with a lot of that, the expressions aren't your typical dark/angsty superhero fare. Yeah it's still a "Daredevil on the edge of losing it" story but the vulnerability is a lot more believable here. Or something. Whatever it is, it's refreshing. Even if it is all fucked up for your boy Murdock.

I had to put the book down for a minute and run laps around the block soon as Foggy started drawing that diagram too. WOO!

Almost didn't have the energy to follow up that heat with the back-up story but I'm glad I did.

This shit was so good!

A+++++

Posted by buckshot defunct, Thu May-23-13 12:14 AM
Not much to say about this one besides the fact that I enjoyed it. I feel like if you read me an outline of the story's plot points, I'd think you were on drugs but the execution makes it work.

Last issue changed the game a bit and so this kinda reads like the beginnings of Act 2. Some interesting developments, some interesting things I hadn't considered about the first 9 issues (For example, I previously thought MJ was just being an idiot but I think her deep connection to Peter was causing her to pick up on his presence even when Otto was wylin'), but also some repetition that makes me worry a bit about this story stalling out in the middle. But for the most part Slott hasn't let me down so I'm rolling with it.
651052, yeah, it was good, wasn't it?
Posted by shockzilla, Thu May-23-13 06:04 AM

You hung on longer than I did but that's a fair assessment nonetheless.
651085, here's where you lost me
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Thu May-23-13 11:41 AM
that run wasn't just simple stuff
GJ's run had a lot of heart and care for the characters underneath all the explosions and blood, that can't be denied
also, Blackest Night was brilliantly written if you ask me; I cared about what happened to just about every character in that book, not to mention the fact that Ivan Reis turned in the #2 all-time art performance on an event book (God's Property being #1 with the original Crisis)
I don't agree with the notion that straight hero action=lesser grade entertainment, that sort of idea keeps comics in the doldrums in regards to public opinion
you'd be hard pressed to find a better trilogy than Rebirth/War/Blackest Night (and you're right, he should've ended it there, and I think he even wanted to)
651131, i can't rock with you on BN being well written
Posted by bshelly, Thu May-23-13 09:29 PM
not when he threw in the auxillary lanterns. that shit was wack as hell. i didn't love the whole nekron makes supes dead angle either.

as for characterization, i plan on going back to reread Johns's run from Rebirth to Blackest Night. I worry that in retrospect Johns's Hal will seem like an empty vessel, a generic hero. we'll see.

>not when he threw in the auxillary lanterns. that shit was
>wack as hell. i didn't love the whole nekron makes supes dead
>angle either.
>

You mean Barry & Them?
cmon man you had to see that coming, each one of them had been alluded to beforehand; I didn't love it but it wasn't make or break for me
as far as the living Black Lanterns, that was one of the main plot points of BN; Nekron legitimized all of their deaths and the fact that they came back in the first place was to have a place in his endgame
you take the most powerful people in the universe off the good squad and make them pawns in your war against life, it sends quite the message and-you guessed it-triggers all sorts of emotions in people (more than likely fear)
that part actually gave their resurrections and deaths another more congruent meaning

>as for characterization, i plan on going back to reread
>Johns's run from Rebirth to Blackest Night. I worry that in
>retrospect Johns's Hal will seem like an empty vessel, a
>generic hero. we'll see.

people have said that he turned Hal in a one-note asshole, but they weren't paying attention
Hal now has tons of nuance and different parts of his personality were exposed BUT he was still a maverick

Posted by Paps_Smear, Fri May-24-13 11:58 AM
My expectations for this series have been so so and I'm shocked that its one of the better things DC is putting out now.

The story progress is not what I expected. I figured Calvin Rose would just continue his fight against the court of owls but last issue his neck is broken by Bane after being severely screwed over now the court has brought him back to life. Now he's vulnerable to the cold and a lil less human like the rest of the Talons.

Now they're using him as their own hit man or they'll kill his girl and her kid. Really didn't see them doing this and it makes me really want to see what happens next. The change in artist isn't too bad but I still prefer the original. Other than that this has been fire.
