He hadn't made a film in four years. His last movie was Seven Pounds which disappointed (in terms of Will Smith). He knew that he was going to make After Earth to help boost his son's career and is a risk in itself since M. Night hasn't been knocking it out of the park recently so re-establishing his brand made more sense than taking a risk.
