Fact!
630079, Crazy, but I don't know if I've ever had real maple syrup?!
Posted by buckshot defunct, Tue Nov-06-12 02:07 AM
If I have... it's been a long ass time

And really I didn't grow up with either one. It's not that my parents were health nuts or couldn't afford syrup, but for whatever reason we just never had syrup around the house because we never had things that required syrup.

If I wanted to get down with some Mrs Butterworth, it would have to be at my friends' house on a Saturday morning. And damn, it felt like such a luxury. I can still vividly remember staying at a neighbors' house one time and eating homemade pancakes with Karo syrup on them. Mind-blowing experience.

I hear up east they do maple syrup tastings like they do wine tastings at vineyards out here. Seems like my kind of party.
630195, that's.... weird.
Posted by lonesome_d, Wed Nov-07-12 09:17 AM
did you guys do, like, grits or something for big weekend breakfasts? Pancakes (and to a lesser extent, waffles and french toast) were a weekend staple. Especially once I got old enough to make them.

>damn, it felt like such a luxury. I can still vividly remember

Hahaha. Karo was what we used if we were out of maple/log cabin, and it was never the same.

>I hear up east they do maple syrup tastings like they do wine
>tastings at vineyards out here. Seems like my kind of party.

I've heard of such things but never been to one. We usu. get our maple syrup from Trader Joe's of Costco... and when I was in college in VT, you could just get it from roadside syrup makers' stands, but they usually came in annoying metal containers. Some are better than others for sure, and there's a definite difference between the letter assignments that's really interesting.

One of my best beers used about 50% maple syrup for the sugars. Strroooooooong, sweet, and tasty. Still have one or two left to crack this holiday season (brewed in Feb. 2011).

Read this one last week and never got around to posting about it. Yow. Weird stuff. But certainly entertaining. And I'm starting to think that maybe I have a threshold when it comes to bizarre, absurdist sci-fi... like maybe I like it well enough, but don't want to read a bunch of different books with that similar vibe at the same time, maybe I only have room for the best of the bunch at a given time. And maybe that's why Multiple Warheads, while impressive, didn't wind up as impressive as I thought it might - because that space was already being filled by the Zaucer.
630080, I immediately thought of this book as sci-fi
Posted by buckshot defunct, Tue Nov-06-12 02:15 AM
And still do, basically

But is it really? After all, the dude is sporting a magic wand. Seems like it's blurring the line between sci-fi and fantasy, at least.

I feel you on the threshold thing. I think we all have them. Right now I'm on a bit of a sci-fi binge that I don't see ending anytime soon... BUT... After reading Valis and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch back to back, I'm good on Philip K Dick for a while. Thankfully it's a big genre with lots of room to explore.

I mentioned King City to you in regards to Multiple Warheads, but to be honest I still haven't finished the collection I bought several months ago. The art and world building are incredibly dope, but the storytelling never quite sucked me in like that. Maybe it was getting buried in all that other stuff, or maybe it was just me.

630194, Cyber Force #1
Posted by lonesome_d, Wed Nov-07-12 09:10 AM
Man, if I spent bucks to donate to Kickstarter, I'd be pissed if the guys I gave to wound up giving away the book for free... and not just one issues, but the first five.

I'd also be pissed if the book stank as bad as this one did.

I know Silvestri was one of the Image OGs, but I gotta think that Cyber Force was one of those books that make people shake their heads about '90s Image. This is all bad names and hulking dudes.

That said, it was free, and it's maybe not QUITE bad enough to make it not worth picking up for free when it's just sitting on the counter next to checkout.

But overall, this was the worst of any of the free books I picked up from HalloweenFest or whatever they called it, and paled badly next to Bats: Earth One.
630223, ouch it wasnt even apart of halloween fest =(

And frankly, I've had no problems whatsoever with the Manhattan Projects release schedule... every issue has been distinct enough and published within reasonable proximity to the preceding one. Keep up the good work; the book remains among the best comics I've ever read.

Secret probably has pushed past that point where I'm going to need a re-read before tackling #3, but I'd rather have that than an unfinished or shitty book coming out. At any rate, I appreciate your forthrightness, but it's not nearly as important to me as the marvelous ideas you keep pumping out seemingly at will.

I hadn't been planning to pick it up since I haven't been super-enamored of Spencer's books, but am VERY glad I did.

I've been reading a lot of Rossmo-illustrated books (Proof, Green Wake, Debris) and it's clear his art is a great fit for a horror-type book like this. ANd the coloring made the chronological sequences easy to follow and wickedly chilling. Great #1.

Anyone else pick this up?

I'm glad the New Orleans setting stayed intact. Being a comic nerd growing up in Louisiana, one didn't get too many local superheroes. It was always a thrill to see a place I sort of recognized in a comic book. Although I was never big on the horror voodoo stuff, but I guess there's just no getting around that.

Anyway, I thought this was decent. Good enough set-up that I'll pick up the next one. Not a whole lot there is to say about it beyond that.

Not totally feeling the costume design though. Definitely a step up from this of course: http://d1466nnw0ex81e.cloudfront.net/n_iv/600/1106855.jpg
(Note: Ponytail)

But that logo? Really cool in a Saul Bass-y kind of way but I don't think it has any business being on the costume itself.

The founding fathers are back, and... well, they're fucking shit up.

And since it's bad PR for Cap to be seen beating down undead presidents, there's only one man SHIELD can turn to. If that premise doesn't do it for you, this comic probably won't either. But for me? I'm all in.

A great looking, funny comic book. Even though he's the 'merc with the mouth', I think the best line of the book went either to Lincoln or FDR. Come to think of it Wade was operating a couple notches below his normal Daffy Duck levels this issue, which I liked because he tends to come on too strong for me. Him being more reeled in allowed the humor to be more situational. And if this book continues to put him in situations like this, I may just hang around.

A-

Everyone since him has written Deadpool as a wacky humor comic, which I guess works for some, but I prefer him as a more mean-spirited Spider-Man in the face of standard superhero "save the world" scenarios, with the occasional absurd mercenary job thrown in between arcs. When the first issue of an ongoing feels more like a mini, it does not bode well.

But to each his own.

I feel you on the DP funny overkill. It's my only read beef with the show Supernatural, which Jessica watches. They just HAVE to throw a joke in every six lines or so. It's stupid, and they most of the time the humor stands out like a sore thumb, and the jokes are very hit-or-miss.

(otherwise the show is good)
