629151, spent the weekend grading iffy areas, cleaning gutters
Posted by lonesome_d, Sun Oct-28-12 05:21 PM
cleaning my folks' gutters cuz pops is in his 70s, and picking up all the shit from my yard and shoving it into the shed.

Kinda stuff takes more time than you'd think.
629294, can we get an update please, d?
Posted by ninjitsu, Tue Oct-30-12 12:31 AM
you guys okay?
629374, came through fine, didn't even lose power here
Posted by lonesome_d, Tue Oct-30-12 03:37 PM
though two trees bordering our property came down on neighbors' yards... looks like they took power lines but didn't hit houses.

my folks are still out though and I had to run the chainsaw over to their rental property as they lost a tree... sad to saw up the tree that I grew up climbing... still has our rope swing on it.

Beach house is a different story though... the islands are still closed and likely to be until at least Thursday. Coupla pics from here & there available online... lots of damage/photos in back bay but no indications of beach block (folks' house is just land side of hte dunes). Only hint is that the lifeguard station used to be in the dunes 7 blocks from our place; now what's left is on the beach 9 blocks from our place. We'll find out more later, guess.

NOT THE WAWA! http://philadelphia.foobooz.com/files/2012/10/avalon-wawa-480x360.jpg

that place is in the back bay area and is a bit of a local landmark.

North end of the island is always hardest hit. Sea wall was breached in a few places and the road out to the next town north was washed out: https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRwn1WwkGj8UEFZ-UMjFm4VTxw4H_x-o4xtGnKrlnyqJq-DL8wW3A
629414, Glad to hear you guys made it through...

Posted by lonesome_d, Thu Nov-01-12 12:11 PM
folks got down there this a.m. and it looks like the only issue is water in the crawl space. A headache, but incredibly minor compared to the possibilities and the unfortunate realities others are going through.

Thanks for the support, guys.
629628, Good to know

I've been checking in with some NYC folks. Thankfully they're all OK but a couple of them went through some straight up Cloverfield shit. It's crazy, I still feel like Katrina just happened yesterday
629636, They're handing out water & food in NYC
Posted by lonesome_d, Thu Nov-01-12 01:07 PM
if there's any silver lining in this, it'll be that the East Coast finally figures out that if you're going to develop coastal property, you HAVE to work to protect it. Don't know what the hell they can do for Manhattan, but for the barrier islands, Christie's already said they're going to mandate dune growth projects. Or something, dude's a politician.

But dunes are wickedly important to island stability AND to wildlife, and they've known that for 50 years, so there's really no excuse for OCean City's (or Atlantic City's) boardwalk being over the water at high tide in 2012, with development right on the other side.

On a sadder note, the salt marsh museum I love posted this picture of their dock http://wetlandsinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/dock.jpg and there's no word from the local Zoo down there - which normally wouldn't concern me too much, but they've got some great animals worth protecting including a pair of 6 mo. old snow leopard cubs that live low enough that you go by their enclosure on a boardwalk.
629663, Guaranteed...

Animals were evacuated. Come on, we knew this beast was coming. Folks prepared.
629570, Don't Forget This Song is great!
Posted by lonesome_d, Wed Oct-31-12 10:03 PM
not sure how well it would go over for you guys who don't know and/or appreciate old (really old) country music, but I've loved it. Quirky character captured beautifully by the art, and full of information I'd heard hints of but never known anything in-depth about.

Haven't popped in the CD for it yet but will do so soon.

If you have no idea who they are, you might recognize this song from the O Brother mania a decade ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbmQQ4RfzVE

Everyone who said Meru was a sleeper agent seems to have been right... I was skeptical, but she seems to be doing well, always getting away by the skin of her teeth. Lyme is badass, not just the 'make everyone feel good' dude he appeared to be last issue. Killer Kindt rocking it month after month.
629575, Pissed at myself for buying A+X.

This cat used o work at my LCS before making the jump to the big city. His new video was filmed at Toronto Fan Expo and is probably the only rap video with a Steve McNiven cameo in the history of the genre. Oh and there's about a million cosplayers in it as well.

This became one of my favorite reads and now after the next two issues he's taking a year off the book?!

It's a crime we're gonna have to wait a year for this story to continue
If you haven't read this at all shame on you

Supposed to be some AV specials in the interim.
629735, damn, didn't know that -- the book is the only vamp shit I'll fux wit
Posted by celery77, Fri Nov-02-12 11:14 AM
if I were Vertigo, I'd try to shop out some short stories to different writer/artist teams just to really bring the world into full view. Snyder knows what he's doing, but the whole fabric is getting rich enough I'd be fine reading some other people work with it for a while, too.
629727, Inc. #4 was great. Matches Malone's toothpick made it.
Posted by lonesome_d, Fri Nov-02-12 10:24 AM
Big reveal of Wingman didn't do much for me, but I enjoyed the character up to then.

Not really sure I understand Bruce's motivations in dealing with Leviathan/Talia. Also still don't understand and don't think Bruce understands the villain... if it Skeletor from the first couple pages, and have we seen him before? REgardless, great action, lots of fun, great comic.
629837, Skeleton Chick, is...Talia!
Posted by JRennolds, Sat Nov-03-12 07:34 PM
We have seen her before.
Solid ish.
Loved the art.
Pretty grimey fight scenes.
Dug the reveal.
A+

629742, Multiple Warheads
Posted by lonesome_d, Fri Nov-02-12 01:16 PM
whoa. Missed this one yesterday but spun through the shop today since I was down there anyway... good thing this week's books still weren't out b/c otherwise I woulda missed this completely.

Still working through it - a lot of bang for your $3.99. Only negative comment is that Brandon Graham could stand to take some lessons in punning from shock.

And buck, flipped through the MAD and caught your two entries. Congrats, my man.
629748, Are you reading PROPHET?
Posted by JRennolds, Fri Nov-02-12 01:45 PM
OH MAH GAWDS.
D, one of the best comics out.
629749, Tried a few issues, didn't go mad for it
Posted by lonesome_d, Fri Nov-02-12 01:58 PM
might have not been in the right mindset at the time, though.
629752, i need yall to read bedlam and get back to me
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Fri Nov-02-12 02:35 PM
629753, Did you read KING CITY?
Posted by buckshot defunct, Fri Nov-02-12 02:36 PM
Multiple Warheads basically feels like a sequel to that.

And Prophet exhibits the same kind of inventiveness, even though the tone couldn't be more different.

Very cool, very dense, and yes... lots of puns. I kinda like 'em though. In a cringe-worthy kind of way.

>And buck, flipped through the MAD and caught your two entries.
>Congrats, my man.

Awesome sir. Thank you.
629842, nope
Posted by lonesome_d, Sat Nov-03-12 08:06 PM
and having read this issue pretty well, I'm not certain I'll be picking up #2... it was great in a lot of ways, but not entirely my cup of tea. Kind of thing I'd definitely check out of the library though!

And btw, what's up with MMAD having you write but not draw?Felt like you coulda done a better Lil Wayne than the one they used (which was pretty god, admittedly).
629874, It depends
Posted by buckshot defunct, Sun Nov-04-12 02:45 PM
Ultimately it's their call, but I generally have a feel for how things will play out. If I pitch something about a specific famous person, such as Weezy, I'm 99% sure I won't be drawing it. Because likenesses and caricatures aren't really my thing. Whereas Mad has contacts with a bunch of great artists who are famous for that very thing. So, not to disagree with someone trying to pay me a compliment, but I get a big kick out of seeing other artists take on my ideas. Maybe it'd be different if I never got to draw, but for now I'm digging the fact that I can switch things up like that depending on what the joke calls for. Whether it's due to time or ability, I have a lot more ideas than I know how to execute, so this is a cool outlet for me.
629897, if they're still up for roasting Twilight, I'd love to see you pitch
Posted by lonesome_d, Sun Nov-04-12 08:39 PM
a Twilight/Blade crossover spoof.

Loved seeing the Toilet saga... My wife has watched all 4 of the Twilight movies over the past week. Lousy movies, but they've been good for my sex life! (That said, I was appalled at the lack of female eye candy in the films.)
629757, Bedlam

629816, Should I read Punisher Max?
Posted by Paps_Smear, Sat Nov-03-12 03:30 PM
I like the character but I admit I've hardly read much about him at all.

I do hear how good the Max series is though so I wanted to know what you guys think.
629833, RE: Yes. You'll like it lot of bit.
