566905, Who is the GOAT action movie star?
Posted by icecold21, Thu May-19-11 03:36 PM
I'm thinking its gotta be between Arnold or Bruce Willis.

I wanna say Bruce, just because Die Hard is the GOAT action franchise.
566913, you gotta throw Stallone in the mix...
Posted by gumz, Thu May-19-11 04:26 PM
for me it'll always be between Stallone and Arnold
566918, Arnold
Posted by spades, Thu May-19-11 04:52 PM
Although, considering the amount of work he's put in so far, I'd say Statham has a shot in about 5 years.
566929, Arnold, Stallone, Willis in that order.
Posted by Innocent Criminal, Thu May-19-11 06:55 PM
566930, take away Rocky, Stallone is kinda lean in great action films
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Thu May-19-11 07:04 PM
Rambos
Night Hawks
Cobra
Expendables
Cliffhanger?
Daylight?
Get Carter?
Over the Top don't count either

no way he's seeing Bruce
566947, but why Willis?
Posted by BigWorm, Fri May-20-11 04:45 AM
As far as action classics (whatever classics means) he doesn't really have a ton. You've got the DieHard movies, and half of them were not good.

Then what? Last Man Standing? Fifth Element? A fair amount of his other hits aren't even action movies. I <3 Hudson Hawk and all, but...
566953, word and by taking away Rocky you're taking away 6 movies...
Posted by gumz, Fri May-20-11 07:41 AM
that aint even right
567037, dude Rocky is not action, let's add Kevin Costner then
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Fri May-20-11 06:35 PM
his "action" catalog kills Stallone's
567038, not just for movies but also because he singlehandedly changed the
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Fri May-20-11 06:39 PM
face of the action star and opened the door to Cruise and Matt Damon being able to get in the game. He made the regular guy an action star. If not for Vin, the musclehead action star would be extinct.
On top of that his catalog is longer and flat out better.

Armageddon
5th Element
LMS
16 Blocks
Striking Distance
yes HH counts
the Die Hards are good - better than the Rambos
RED was a good flick
Hostage was very entertaining
It really is not close, even if you count my bias

edit

To be fair Tango and Cash is also a big winner for Stallone
566931, hate it or love it Tom Cruise gets to be in the convo
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Thu May-19-11 07:06 PM
In all honesty it's still Arnold but Bruce is my personal favorite

Cruise's catalog rival's Sly's, real talk.
566952, ^^^tell'em son!
Posted by ThaTruth, Fri May-20-11 07:39 AM
566964, Rivals? If the First Blood series didn't exist...
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri May-20-11 08:46 AM
... Stallone would be pretty fucking close to Van Damme and Lundgren in regard to action films.
566999, Hmmmm, he might be runner up, honestly....
Posted by spades, Fri May-20-11 12:32 PM
567016, Definitely
Posted by icecold21, Fri May-20-11 01:45 PM
566962, Arnold and Sly. Doesn't Willis only have the Die Hard films?
Posted by phenompyrus, Fri May-20-11 08:42 AM
Arnie has Terminator films, Predator, Commando, Total Recall, Running Man, etc.

Sly gets Rambo, Rocky, Expendables.

Willis has Die Hard. And...?

JCVD just has a bunch of random action/martial arts films, some good, most meh.

Seagal is just like JCVD.

The martial arts guys, Li and Chan, are close to being near the top.

The new wave (Statham, The Rock, Diesel) are still up-and-comers.

*EDIT*
Others to consider:
Tom Cruise
Nicolas Cage (C'mon, ya'll hated The Rock and Con Air?)
Wesley Snipes
Matt Damon (those Bourne movies, dizzamn)
566966, Mel Gibson must be mentioned.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri May-20-11 08:48 AM
Between the Road Warrior series and the Lethal Weapon series alone, he's got several winners. If Braveheart fits your definition, then even better.

Plus, Payback, The Patriot, and Ransom are all fun action thrill ride type flicks.
566968, ^Forgot to mention him^
Posted by phenompyrus, Fri May-20-11 09:10 AM
567039, yeah, he passes Stallone too
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Fri May-20-11 06:40 PM
567511, I even kinda enjoyed 'Edge Of Darkness' in terms of recent work
Posted by Bombastic, Tue May-24-11 04:58 PM
it got a little ridiculous at the end but it was better than a lot of the flicks I'm seeing folks list as wins in here.
566969, Wilis really gets by on Die Hard almost exclusively
Posted by spenzalii, Fri May-20-11 09:24 AM
He was a barefoot Joe Everyman smartass that had his gun and wits about him. While Stallone and Arnold definitely have the bigger body of work, the fact you could relate with Willis moreso than the other two have people giving him any consideration

And honestly, the oG Die Hard is like the perfect action movie. GOAT or top 3, no question.
566971, "Bruce Willis Only has Die Hard" . Are you nuts?
Posted by Nappy Soul, Fri May-20-11 09:34 AM
-Die Hard Quadrology ( 5th one is on the way)
-Pulp Fiction
-Fifth Element
-Sin City
-Armagedon
-The Siege
-The Last Boy Scout
-Striking Distance
-Lucky Number Slevin
-Red
-Surrogates
-The Jackal

GOAT is still Arnold because he made his characters iconic.Bruce would be right behind him. I just need The Rock and Vince to catch up.
566995, Not ONLY Die Hard, but truth be told
Posted by spenzalii, Fri May-20-11 12:09 PM
A lot of those flicks you listed aren't exactly 'action' flicks, and some he's not even headlining (Slevin, for instance)

Don't get me wrong, he's got a shit ton of movies, and some pretty damn good ones too. But for action movies, his calling card is, was and will always be Die Hard.

They're really doing a 5th one? Lord....
567002, ^Exactly
Posted by phenompyrus, Fri May-20-11 12:42 PM
567015, Read it again genius
Posted by icecold21, Fri May-20-11 01:45 PM
I never said that.

I said it is the GOAT action franchise.

And I said that's why I have Bruce NUMBER ONE
566983, I'd just like to throw Charles Bronson into the mix
Posted by Call It Anything, Fri May-20-11 11:04 AM
I don't think he's the GOAT, but I think he deserves mention in the conversation based on some of the names that are popping up here.

You've got an ok franchise (Death Wish)
Awesome parts in ensemble (Dirty Dozen, Magnificent Seven)
Leads in tons of underrated 70s action flicks (Red Sun, Mr. Majestyk, Hard Times)
A HOF bad-ass in my book (Harmonica in Once Upon A Time in the West)
567007, I like that Once upon a time in the west inclusion
Posted by Dae021, Fri May-20-11 01:09 PM
That's a great look
566984, i wish Statham was in bigger movies more often
Posted by hardware, Fri May-20-11 11:06 AM
567000, I said above, he'll be in the running in another 5 years.
Posted by spades, Fri May-20-11 12:34 PM
watch.
567066, no he wont...he should've been by now but he keeps making bs ones
Posted by gumz, Sat May-21-11 03:10 AM
i love the crank movies though
566998, Jet and Jackie wept n/m
Posted by k_orr, Fri May-20-11 12:20 PM
567001, Yeah, if you expand this internationally, Jackie is the ONLY answer
Posted by spades, Fri May-20-11 12:34 PM
It's not even close.
567033, on that note, Chow Yun-Fat
Posted by will_5198, Fri May-20-11 04:36 PM
567040, yeah, he gets my vote in the intl tip - Jackie 2nd don't think this
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Fri May-20-11 06:43 PM
is about the intl rankings though
567061, RE: on that note, Chow Yun-Fat
Posted by Lil Rabies, Sat May-21-11 12:59 AM
That's also my choice.
567008, Domestic List in order
Posted by spades, Fri May-20-11 01:11 PM
Arnold
Cruise
Gibson
Stalone
Clint
Willis
Bronson
567011, none of Clint Eastwood's movies are really action jaints tho
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Fri May-20-11 01:17 PM
they/'re mostly action/dramas or action/comedies
but at the same time he's far and away the best actor of all of them tho
567023, I can kinda see where you're coming from but...
Posted by spades, Fri May-20-11 02:45 PM
Dirty Harry?
ALL the westerns??

Times have changed a bit. What we consider action NOW isn't what we considered action then.
567041, Willis is way too low - ya'll Bruno haters are trippin
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Fri May-20-11 06:44 PM
567017, Wesley Snipes is getting slept on here
Posted by icecold21, Fri May-20-11 01:46 PM
Will Smith is too, for that matter.
567024, Wesley, maybe, Will, tho?
Posted by spades, Fri May-20-11 02:46 PM
Nah, his catalogue is WAY too varied to be considered an action star.
567030, If Mel Gibson's gonna get love, Will should too
Posted by icecold21, Fri May-20-11 03:45 PM
Bad Boys, Enemy of the State, I Robot
567042, you're right let's look at the tape
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Fri May-20-11 06:50 PM
