Holy shit.
Holy fucking shit.

Miike is a guy, despite his wackiness, who's accomplished so much with such a varied filmography that you give him a genre flick and he knows how to hit all the beats in his sleep. He does nothing different then what you would find in a Kurosawa flick, but his LOVE for those movies and the genre just seems out in every frame...from the cinematography on...it's just next level work happening here.

Plots straightforward: Since the Shogun has reunited Japan, the Samurai class is in decline because it's relatively a peaceful time...peaceful except for the brother of the Shogun who tortures and kills people every chance he gets. Problem is he starts to make political moves and is seen as the heir apparent; thus a conspiracy within the govt begins to make sure he doesn't live to see that day.

From the title and having seen dozens of these movies you can kinda guess what happens next. But whats awesome is that the first half along the way does a really good job of introducing the samurai and making them well rounded while showing just how despicable a bastard the Shogun's brother really is...which gets you invested as a viewer and gives the movie actual heft. Then Miike unrolls a motherfucker of a stunt: a 40 minute battle scene of epic motherfucking badassery. I fucking giggled like a ten year old in my seat at some of the segments.

its out on ppv.. However, if you can see it in the theater i would highly recommend it...it's just that kind of movie
564451, this was amazing

very disciplined and focused epic. i'm scared to watch the original Miike's version will probably taint how I receive it.
564452, Yeah man. I was just surpised how discipline and focused it was

Kinda shows you how even when you follow a template, a good ass movie is still a good ass movie

Because the guy had just given his life for that piece of shit not even two minutes ago.

But there was something about Lord Naritsugu's stare. He wasn't gleeful about what he doing.....but just cold as hell about it. Real talk, that guy's stare was the most chilling thing about.

I'm kinda glad he went out like a bitch. It justified the serious tone from all the samurai because they knew first hand how real it could get.

That's why I loved when they set up all the traps and realized they were trapped in the town, with the samurai looking down at them all they did was unroll the scroll that the tortured woman wrote, on some 'Not one of you motherfuckers are going going to get out of here alive'

I'm definitely getting this on on demand tomorrow. Looks amazing. Checked to see if it's coming to any Milwaukee-area theater and nope.

Good looks on this! My film game is slipping something terrible ...
565884, Just caught this today, real dope.

Great filmmaking through and through, especially the pacing and having just the right amount of characterization for this sort of film. It's up there with the greatest in the genre, but it gets some points knocked off for getting a little loose in the epic battle, with bad guys being overtly goofy on camera, acting like the putty dudes from Power Rangers.

Sword of Doom or Kagemusha probably still tops for me.
565972, i've heard so many good things about this flick.
Posted by BigSlickMick, Thu May-12-11 11:31 AM
i need to peep it ASAP. probably gonna have to catch it on PPV since it's not playing in theatres in my area.

Kurosawa flicks don't have gruesome imagery nor extreme violence, though.

>Then Miike unrolls a motherfucker of a stunt: a

The battle sequence is an instant classic. It's up there with the best of the best.

As for the GOAT samurai flick, my vote is for 1964's Harakiri which Miike remade in 3D and is going to screen in a few days at Cannes. Teaser trailer and other publicity info:

567902, saw this at the theatre saturday - FIRE!!!!
Posted by kayru99, Sun May-29-11 09:05 PM
also - SPOILER!!!!!!-

everytime Narigitsu did something fucked up, the reaction of the folks on screen was roughly the same as the audience. Literally, me and like 5 people said "how you gonna kick HIS head, when he saved your ass?" JUST before dude was like "how you gonna kick HIS head when he just saved your ass?", lol

One of the GOAT villains in a movie

604069, Because Koyota was a demon!
Posted by Sepia., Tue Mar-27-12 07:38 PM
lol. I've been wanting to have this discussion but I don't know anybody besides my dad who's seen it and cared about it.

Anyway, remember when they tried to knock him out so they could leave without him following? It was like a mosquito landing on his head.

Then, in the village they stayed at, they were offered all the pretty girls. Of course Koyota was interested.
But then he basically sexes all of them to within an inch of their life AND
the old man also, who seems hypnotized by his "charming" member, because there aren't any women left.

AND, don't forget about Upashi, the woman he kept referring to.
There's a disturbing flashback scene (and the reason I got into this theory)
where we see Upashi kneeling by a river with blood trickling down her legs, eating something raw and bloody.
It's been suggested that eating an unborn fetus is something a Japanese folklore demon would do,
which makes sense since they have so many different ones known for devouring humans.

SO. If Kiga was a demon, or mountain spirit, whatever, it makes sense that he'd be immortal and
not only repaying the favor of being set free but just down for some good ol' fun playing with the humans for a while.

I go with this theory because I like it, lol. I enjoy folklore.

ok found it

and got dang at this

http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=212290

Koyata takes the village elder's offer. He has sex with several women and is pretty hard on them, too. A few women lie in front of he house (obviously out of breath) when finally the last woman runs out of the house (having terrible pain between her legs); she collapses in front of the house. The village elder tries to have some damage limitation and prevents Koyata from taking one of the girls back inside which already collapsed in front of the house. The village elder says that she's already half dead. Koyata should have mercy. Then he notices Koyata's huge penis and looks at it in awe. Since Koyata had all the women in the village already, there's only one way to finally satisfy him. The village elder makes himself available. Koyata's virility and his huge penis are another hint at the fact that he's a demon.

ok found another theory (well..not theory as the director confirmed this)
like this too

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/13_Assassins

KIGA Koyata (Yūsuke Iseya) – A hunter claiming to be of direct Samurai lineage who is found suspended in a cage in the forest as a punishment for pursuing his boss's wife. Aids the assassins in finding a route to Ochiai as well as in combating the enemy samurai. Aspects of his character seem to reference Sun Wukong as well as Kikuchiyo from the Seven Samurai. His strength from living in the woods allows him to survive wounds that would kill an average man (like a short sword through the neck); however, it has been confirmed during interview with the director that the bandit represents a Yōkai or forest spirit and therefore is immortal. Fighting bears is his favorite pastime and adds to his strength.

604587, It's a deleted scene, lol.

603818, Might be my favorite live-action battle scene ever
Posted by Triptych, Mon Mar-26-12 02:19 PM
I still might have to put Seven Samurai at the top, but they're almost different genres in my opinion.

603922, yeah that was some dope shit right there
Posted by xangeluvr, Tue Mar-27-12 09:03 AM
I don't understand how that badass ronin got killed though. One scene he slashes through 20 dudes without breaking a sweat, next scene he's dead.
604032, then final scene *spoiler*
Posted by lfresh, Tue Mar-27-12 03:55 PM

hes alive
um...how'd that happen

604090, yeah, that was weird too

attempt at comedic relief or something.

also, why did Shinzaemon let dude stab him in the belly when he easily could have defeated him and gone on his merry way with his nephew. that made no sense to me.
604173, my theory?

he didn't want to live he gave hints previously at this talking about his time was over his purpose as a samurai was utilized blah blah something to that effect
this was his suicide run and he was determined to make it exactly that
but first dude has to die
and he didnt deserve the "elegance" of his skills
just a dirty trick to get this over with
so he kills two birds with one stone

604071, If you're talking about Hirayama...
Posted by Sepia., Tue Mar-27-12 07:56 PM
... it's because the badass always has to die. It's like they have to go down so that the main protagonist gets the most shine.

I started noticing it when my favorite characters would always die, lol.
My favorite is always the badass with fewer words and fewer smiles. And he always has to die.
604091, yeah, that's who i'm talking about
Posted by xangeluvr, Wed Mar-28-12 12:00 AM
your reasoning makes sense, but at the same time its just too ridiculous considering they spent every scene he was in building him up.

whatever. small gripe. the movie was all around badass!

>... it's because the badass always has to die. It's like they

Posted by stylez dainty, Tue Mar-27-12 04:01 PM
Started to bug me after a while. Run with sword held two handed over your head, get your middle slashed, die.
604490, i generally like this movie.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Mar-30-12 09:17 PM
but the bleakness and grittiness of the world made it kinda dull to me.

it couldve used some more vibrant settings but i guess that was of the point of style.

solid 8/10.
604573, okay, you've got me hyped for this
Posted by Options, Sat Mar-31-12 10:14 PM
to my surprise, it actually turned up on a dvd search. I thought this was gonna be another one of those joints I just gradually forget about cuz I can't *find* it anywhere. I may just go ahead and buy it blind...
604783, "So what? Do only samurai matter in this world?"

This movie made my eyes tear up for dopeness. I rented it, but this is something I need to own. Good looks.
