551739, Actors you don't / wouldn't believe as the tough guy.

Like, would you buy Travolta as John Gotti?

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/01/26/john-gotti-john-travolta-movie/

According to Marc Fiore — the CEO of Fiore Films, LLC — the Pulp Fiction star is in serious talks to play New York City mob boss John Gotti in Gotti, an upcoming film executive produced by Fiore about three generations of the crime family.
551745, Neil Patrick Harris.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Jan-26-11 08:07 PM
551747, My own first suggestion was Sean Hayes.
Posted by ricky_BUTLER, Wed Jan-26-11 08:20 PM
But I don't want this post to devolve into some sort of summit on modern masculinity now that three gay dudes have been mentioned in response to actors it's hard to perceive as being tough.

What about Tom Hanks?
551749, Well, Neil Patrick Harris has never even played a gay character, I think.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Jan-26-11 08:30 PM
He's played guys that get pussy before, and extremely believably-- he's a damn good actor. I just don't think he's a "tough guy."

Other gay men like Ian McKellen absolutely can play tough guys. So I wouldn't worry much about the stereotyping.

Tom Hanks I think could play a good head honcho villain-- like a conspirator or gangleader. But I don't think I could see him hand-to-hand combat with someone.

Maybe someone like William H. Macy?
551771, RE: Well, Neil Patrick Harris has never even played a gay character, I think.

He has in a bad lifetime movie, where his lover died of aids. He was a supporting character in the film.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.-Tyler Durden
551777, I stand corrected.

Yeah, he had the gang leader position in Ladykillers, but that's not exactly a tough-guy role. Even in Road To Perdition, though it's part the creation of the character (having this family guy core), he looks like he's playing dress up, especially compared to someone like Daniel Craig or even Paul Newman in the same film.

>Maybe someone like William H. Macy?

In Fargo, he's more weasely than tough, I guess. But he spazzed out in Magnolia, right? I think he could manage that kind of gone-and-snapped type of violent deviant. Like Gary Oldman-lite.
552021, If Henry Fonda can do it, Hanks can do it.
Posted by Duval Spit, Thu Jan-27-11 03:40 PM
552258, His character in Starship Troopers was kind of cold
Posted by Call It Anything, Fri Jan-28-11 02:01 PM
Not tough, but when he was decked out in all black in the end he had some gravitas.
551748, Travolta in that shitty subway movie with Denzel GTFOH
Posted by Tiger Woods, Wed Jan-26-11 08:29 PM
551756, travolta was pretty tough to me in the following movies
Posted by Calico, Wed Jan-26-11 09:20 PM

Pulp Fiction
Broken Arrow

552259, definitely Chili Palmer & Vince Vega

551776, After Return of the King, I thought maybe Bloom had a shot.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Jan-26-11 10:57 PM
It turns out, him taking down that elephant single-handed is the toughest thing he'll ever do in a movie.
551803, after Elizabethtown, i knew he didn't
Posted by Mynoriti, Thu Jan-27-11 04:17 AM
not as any type of lead, anyway
551787, Didn't Timberlake try in Alpha Dog?
Posted by ricky_BUTLER, Thu Jan-27-11 12:54 AM
Never saw it.
551800, he was ok in that, but only because
Posted by Mynoriti, Thu Jan-27-11 03:23 AM
his character turned out to be a pussy

the movie wasn't very good, though not as terrible as i expected
552100, He did try and I laughed a lot throughout the flick
Posted by Sponge, Thu Jan-27-11 07:57 PM
552206, No, he pretty much played a version of himself.
Posted by come on people, Fri Jan-28-11 11:23 AM
It wasn't much of an acting stretch imo.
551801, Freddy Rodriguez in Havoc
Posted by Mynoriti, Thu Jan-27-11 03:25 AM
he's a decent actor who i hope never tries to play anything close to a tough guy again
551808, Omar Gooding in Baby Boy...

after doing wild & CRAZY KIDS in the 80s, that image of the chubby black kid with a fro hawk won't leave my mind...

551835, Leo DiCaprio
Posted by blue23, Thu Jan-27-11 09:39 AM
I thought he was terrible cast in Gangs of New York = way too pretty. He was alot better in Departed but I still don't buy him as a tough guy of any kind.
551837, Now that he's doughy
Posted by AnonymousCoward, Thu Jan-27-11 09:41 AM
I buy him as the crooked cop, with all of the toughness coming from the badge.
552210, he is doughy now isnt he
Posted by lfresh, Fri Jan-28-11 11:29 AM
he lost a bit of doughy
damn shame what happened to that boys face though

>pretty. He was alot better in Departed but I still don't buy
>him as a tough guy of any kind.
blood diamond and body of lies were convincing enough.

it took me AWHILE to get past titanic in terms of buying him as tough, but he pulled it off well
551840, pretty much all of the Apatow actors except Segal, Robinson and Falco
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Thu Jan-27-11 09:46 AM
maybe Segal with the knocked up goatee can do a Nic Cage Kiss of Death type thing.
552007, Yeah, Rogen can't do it. Rudd could probably do it.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jan-27-11 02:41 PM
He's a classically trained actor-- he's got chops, he's just not showing them right now.

Even Jonah Hill probably could... well, he could be creepy. Maybe not "tough" per se.
552031, Rogen kinda had his chance with OAR. Rudd, man I don't know.
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Thu Jan-27-11 04:12 PM
Like in an Elijah Woods Sin City way? Maybe.
Not Jonah Hill - Short and obese is not scary. He'd have to do a Pesci impersonation and I still can't see it. If he was paisan then maybe.

552070, Ben Foster. Check him out in the 3:10 to Yuma remake
Posted by jigga, Thu Jan-27-11 04:55 PM
I missed The Mechanic screening this week but I'm convinced he can play tough after that western, Hostage, Alpha Dog, & 30 Days of Night.
552120, Ben Foster can ABSOLUTELY be the tough guy.

Yeah, I said it.
The closer to forty, than maybe. I sorta buy Ethan Hawke and Tom Hardy. But the further you get from forty, the less I believe it.
Shia Lebouf and his look-alikes couldn't interrogate me into telling them my hair color.
