548012, tv shows that successfully replaced the star of the show. Posted by come on people, Tue Jan-04-11 11:58 AM
hey -- what are some tv shows that replaced their stars and remained successful afterwards? successful is defined as still being successful in ratings and staying on air for 2 or more years after the replacement. here are the two that i can think of:
- valerie/the hogan family: like, damn, how can you name a show AFTER someone....then viciously kill their character off in a car accident? that's crazy as hell. show ran for 4 seasons afterwards on NBC & CBS though.
- 90210: shannon doherty, i guess, wasn't technically the *star* -- however, her & her twin brother moving & adjusting to beverly hills was the premise of the show. they replaced her with tiffani-amber thiessen and ran for 6 more years after she left the show.
any other examples? i left off "family matters" b/c it was clearly urkel's show by the time jo marie peyton noble, for whom the show had been created, left the show.
edit: so i don't mean replacing becky on roseanne or something like that (see replies 3 & 4). i mean replacing the STAR of the show. the main character. one of the people for whom the show was created or was created around.

548065, Sam was THE star, tho Posted by placee_22, Tue Jan-04-11 03:02 PM
Diane was replaceable. If Sam left, the show woulda sucked.
|
548083, I think the show started out with Dianne being the star Posted by handle, Tue Jan-04-11 03:30 PM
Sam was strong - but we were following Dianne's journey for the first year.

548088, Did she leave the nunnery in season 1? Posted by placee_22, Tue Jan-04-11 03:36 PM
or was that around the time Frazier came on the scene?
|
548138, No Posted by handle, Tue Jan-04-11 09:45 PM
Season 1 was romance Season 2 ended up with breakup Season 3 starts with her institutionalized where she meets Fraiser. Season 4 ends with her in the convent. Season 5 she leaves to become a writer?
She shows up on Fraiser one an episode too.

The seasons with Agent Reyes and The Terminator ate my soul...but I stuck with it.
I won't pretend the show was any good either. Shit was TERRIBLE. But again, I'd invested YEARS into it, and wanted to see it through.
>really, who watched it after the movie when the UFO came out >the ice in antarctica?
Again. Ya boy did. And to be honest, I thought the movie was aight. They lied when they said it would explain everything, but it's was ok for what it was. The SECOND movie though? Stir-Fried Shit.

LOL. I just....couldn't. They went too far w/the conspiracy. They dialed it back with the new guy (pair?) though, right?

oh, the first movie was definitely good. what i meant by my comment was....where do you go after that? lol, they could've just ended the whole thing w/that type of sh!t. lol @ watching the 2nd movie....you were REALLY a die-hard!
|
548206, what was most disappointing about the second movie was Posted by shockzilla, Wed Jan-05-11 09:26 AM

M*A*S*H, Three's Company NYPD Blue
Shows that did, but the success of the move is debatable:
Bewitched (The OG of replacing a main character) Good Times That 70's Show

548070, both MASH and Threes Company Posted by cereffusion, Tue Jan-04-11 03:04 PM
had talent remaining to keep it alive. MASH lost the first general guy, Frank, Trapper, Radar...
I actually prefer the BJ & Winchester years, though.
Threes Company would have died w/o Tripper.

again with these, i mean REPLACING the star, not just soldiering on w/o him or her.
|
548078, RE: A couple of others Posted by Call It Anything, Tue Jan-04-11 03:21 PM
>>Bewitched (The OG of replacing a main character) >don't mean a main character, i mean THE main character....like >if they brought in lucille ball to replace elizabeth >montgomery lol
I will argue that Bewitched is a show about Samantha and Darrin. The show was billed as starring Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York (with Agnes Moorehead). The plots revolve around each of their activities and their interplay. Their screen time is pretty much equal. Dick York didn't show his belly button. Darrin is one of the two main characters on the show. Did Elizabeth Montgomery get more shine? Sure. So did Bronson Pinchot but Mark Linn-Baker was absolutely a main character.
|
548080, ok i can feel this. Posted by come on people, Tue Jan-04-11 03:25 PM
especially since i uncritically accepted "cheers" as an example.
|
548082, Cheers was about Dianne in the beginning Posted by handle, Tue Jan-04-11 03:29 PM
She was the "fish out of water" character that was thrust into the bartending world. And she brought in the other cultures. I'd argue she was the lead for the first couple of year.
|
548087, Good point Posted by Call It Anything, Tue Jan-04-11 03:33 PM
They definitely had a lot of early plots focusing on Diane like with her mother losing her money or the guy who left her coming back.

548524, yea both her and marissa tomei left the show Posted by SankofaII, Fri Jan-07-11 12:29 AM

nothing against lisa bonet, because she's talented but it was clear that cosby created that show just to keep her quiet and happy post the angel heart debacle and no one bothered to TAILOR it around Denise's quirky and interesting ass.
|
548577, i think it had as much, if not more, to do w/bringing in debbie allen Posted by come on people, Fri Jan-07-11 09:18 AM
to run the show. the 1st season was run by the woman who ran "square pegs"....it wasn't a show abt life at a black college, it was a generic 80s comedy w/black characters. debbie allen made it what it was.

successful is debatable, but they got rid of Dylan McDermott and several others, and replaced them with James Spader, Rhona Mitra; later adding Shatner and Lake Bell(ewwww) in a recurring roles.
The show ended up getting cancelled, but Spader won the first of 3 Emmy's for the playing Alan Shore, and a new show was created for him and the other new editions.

mostly because the Sally Heep character was wack as fuck. The show got so much better they broke her Alan up, and then fired her.

it was a team and they replaced the head of the team who was there for 8 seasons (he just wanted to retire though) they continued for two more seasons though
also daniel jackson disappeared in a middle season but came back like season 7
don't remember if he was replaced exactly
also they kinda did guest appearances and wotnot

You could argue that Coach Taylor is the star of the show (and you maybe wouldn't be wrong), but the fact that it jettisoned most everyone else in the cast after Season 3 (and smartly avoided the high school TV trap of kids "just hanging around" after they graduated) and was still able to bring in new kids to care about and keep the momentum going, well, that was pretty damn impressive, if I do say so myself...
