Jesus H. Christ just fucking admit.

The cast is A-list black actresses, and you have
to give them a little bit of the benefit of the
doubt. They're not going to act their asses off
in this movie.

You guys are such fucking sissies.

Seriously, grow the fuck up.

When Perry wants to do serious, he does a very
good job.

Artsy fartsy dicks.

Grow up.

You actually thought the phrase "artsy fartsy" was a great insult, typed it on your keyboard, and then clicked "Post message." Who really needs to grow up here? The truth is, you're a colossally tasteless mutant. But keep thinking that you're some kind of blue collar underdog who's constantly under attack by out-of-touch elitists. I don't think Janet has the chops to stand alongside actresses of that caliber. But many of those actresses are absolutely the best women in the world to star in a film like this. He's assembled a hell of a cast and this is gonna be a hit.

And I don't care if you think Tyler Perry is the worst director alive, no director can fuck up Phylicia Rashad. Period.

no director can fuck up thandie newton (DAMN, can we *GET* her in more than one or two pics EVERY couple years?! thanks!), anika noni rose, whoopi goldberg, etc. hell the whole cast.

tyler can't...and if he did, that nigga needs to put down his camera and *WALK* the fuck away forever.
535571, re: Thandie Newton, you never saw "Norbit", did you?

535583, dude one film which wasn't even HER fault
Posted by SankofaII, Sat Sep-18-10 03:59 PM
try again...

i get that you spend your posts tearing everyone down, but look at her resume OVERALL...

yea she had some clunkers "Norbit", "Beloved" (a serious misfire of the utmost degee)--what actor hasn't?

but, across the board, she's been solid and has made some interesting choices (1998's Besieged, Crash, Gridlock'd, Jefferson in Paris, etc.) that, at least for me, SHOW she has chops and can bring it.
535604, calm down, young man; t'was a joke.
Posted by Nukkapedia, Sat Sep-18-10 11:23 PM
you said no director could mess Thandie up. Brian Robbins proved you wrong.
535629, um i never said he could
Posted by SankofaII, Sun Sep-19-10 02:03 PM
i was responding to your swipe about her in general

and to be REAL specific, a shitty ass script and eddie murphy will fuck ANYONE up...
535630, I have nothing personal against Thandie Newton.
Posted by Nukkapedia, Sun Sep-19-10 02:45 PM
I saw her in "The Pursuit of Happyness", and she was good. I saw her in "Norbit" and she was not.

Simple as that.
535655, right...
Posted by SankofaII, Sun Sep-19-10 09:26 PM
but my whole point was that...she's no different that any other actor out there, all have clunkers...

but as an actor, she's quite good. and she, given what she had to play with in Norbit, was decent...

but i'm still going with my earlier points to you above.
535591, Norbit was a classic...
Posted by Shelly, Sat Sep-18-10 07:02 PM
hush your mouf!!!!

Based just on acting, Thandie and Cuba did very good job in that movie. They were the reasons it was tolerable and kept me from walking out.

I mean, Eddie was a HOT GHETTO MESS but THandie and Cuba managed to do very well for what they were given...sorry she didn't fail in this one
540895, y'all abuse the word "classic" far too much.
Posted by Nukkapedia, Tue Nov-02-10 09:26 PM
I blame hip-hop.

"Classic" doesn't mean "film that I saw and liked". "Classic" means "a work of enduring excellence; a typical or perfect example."

That's not "Norbit".

Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Sep-19-10 11:27 AM
From action flicks like The Truth About Charlie and Mission: Impossible 2 to some of her dramatic work like Crash. She can be REEEEEALLY hamfisted with her acting.
535628, Truth About Charlie was ass
Posted by SankofaII, Sun Sep-19-10 02:01 PM
NO ONE got out of that one without getting a massive DING on their resumes..

Mission Impossible 2: given what little she had to do, I have to err on the side of she did well with what she was given...

Crash: hmm....well performances across the board were inconsistent but hers was good...though very underwritten and problematic (yet, oddly enough, she walked away with a couple of the major european awards {BAFTA, etc.} for her role in Crash)

Not saying she's perfect, but it's hard for me to straight up say she's ass...because she's not.

And, For Colored Girls, it looks like this could be a good role for her..real talk: i'm glad, depsite the bullshit Nzingha Stewart went through, the movie is being made.

sidenote: I'm reading one of the drafts of the script for FCG and its quite good...

it says more about them

as in good for the film.

Its about the critic giving a good and balanced review when contrasted with the balanced critics, which btw were not good reviews of the film
but mainly informed... very well informed at that. The critiques are a very stark contrast with the other reviewers who look like clowns who can barely express themselves with anything other than childish tantrums.

541384, it wasn't a masterpiece by any means
Posted by SankofaII, Sun Nov-07-10 11:31 AM
but it wasn't as shitty as I thought it would be...

the performances, given what they had to work with, were very good though not across the board.

Kimberly Elise, Anika Noni Rose, and Tessa Thompson probably had the STRONGEST and most clearly defined roles in the movie IMHO and all did well...

I felt weird that Tessa/The Lady in Purple was basically dealing with an EXTREMELY ADULT storyline (abortion) and she was essentially a teenager...but Tessa did very well. it's hard to believe the snobby black chick who terrorized Kristen Bell and her black best friend on VERONICA MARS brought some surprising talent to her role (and for the black rock fans, SHE'S CHOCOLATE GENIUS's DAUGHTER? WTF?! LOL)

Kimberly Elise was very powerful (sorry Nukka, she can act and did AMAZINGLY WELL here)

Anika Noni Rose played her part well as Yasmine (and I am GLAD Tyler didn't go with his ORIGINAL IDEA of how Yasmine got her revenge on the dude that raped her...)

Thandie Newton: sorry, but she was HILARIOUS as Tangie/Lady In Orange. I get that her role was basically CREATED for the movie and even when there, Tyler apparently admitted that he really didn't know what to do with her character...so I can see why critics felt that Tangie was ALL over the damn place. But, to me, it made sense...I felt that Thandie did well for what she was given and her scenes/relationship with Gilda (Rashad) were very powerful.

Rashad: she was very damn good as Gilda...she didn't get ENOUGH to do.

Loretta Devine/The Lady in Green: same as Rashad...

Kerry Washington/The Lady In Blue: She was fine...I feel like with kerry, she's now just playing...kerry. I kept wanting and hoping I'd see something different from her. But, it was the same. She's talented, but I needed her to stretch and this time around, she didn't.

Janet: hmm...i'm *STILL* very neutral with her. I think there's acting TALENT in her, but she's still just trying to get away with the surface level of it and *NOT* going deeper. Her DL Storyline/getting infected with HIV/AIDS was just shallow, problematic and fucking WRONG...DL Storyline, Tyler? REALLY? Omari Hardwick, on what LITTLE talent he has, got a shitty ass role as the "i'm not gay, I don't take it up the ass, BUT I DO take it up the ass cause i'm positive and i gave my wife the package" closeted DL husband was lame...and making it OBVIOUS he was checking men out..wait, so if he's on the DL would he even PUBLICLY peep a dude's ass in public like that? Do better, Tyler...PLEASE, DO BETTER.

Whoopi Goldberg/Alice/The Lady in White: for this being her first role BACK on the silver screen in what, nearly 10+ years? she got the short end of the stick...of all the characters, Alice SHOULD have been the one woman in the movie ALLOWED to change and she wasn't. Why would she choose religion over her daughters? What was going on underneath that? There was never a sense that Alice could change, would change, or would even take responsibility for the fact that her 'wayward' daughters were because of her....period.

overall, it was decent. I'm still tired of Tyler and his need to demonize women who are in high powered careers, women in abusive relationships and women who are very religious/devout--I still maintain that he has SERIOUS issues with women AND issues with men...cause not ONE of the men in THIS movie or in *ANY* of his movies rises above a stereotype or caricature.

I've give it a B/B- overall.

and yes, i agree with you that thandie replacing mariah is a GREAT thing...

but it was a decent movie....

one that can be improved somewhere down the line when someone else decides to make another movie out of this play (or somehow makes a movie out of Nina Simone's "Four Women" or something)
541517, I disagree.
Posted by Nukkapedia, Mon Nov-08-10 12:58 PM

her only dialog frum the choreopoem was when she was tellin tangi/thandie about herself
the back & forth after little sister had the abortion
tho i do cotton to how the creation of her character added to the connectivity & therefore fluidity of the characters' bonds to one another

She may not have stretched her role out, but she's got the mother figure character honed down to a science, I can't see how you can call out her acting and let Ms. Jackson slide...she was pretty bad.

She started out flat as a board, but by the end of the film I felt like she'd nailed her character, and her tone was appropriate for the film.

I just felt like Phylicia Rashad was always giving 7 even when 5 or 3 were required. I got a lot of "television" from her, I mean.

Posted by Brownsugar, Sun Feb-13-11 12:23 PM
I didn't get to see it at the theatre, (really glad that I did not!!!) Tyler Perry put his foot in this one...He chose top of the line actors and actresses and everyone of them played their parts to the ultimate. I was always curious about the play but never did get to see it and really had no idea what Colored Girls was really about. This movie showed the gross realities of events that can happen in anyone's life...Not just colored girls. I am sure that all races of women can relate to some of the events in this movie in a very touching way, including myself.

This movie showed very gross realities of life. I saw nothing funny about anything in this movie. There was three scenes in this movie that was very hard for me to watch...I won't get into any names of the actors or characters that they played but, the scene where the daddy dropped those two babies out of the window, the New Jack City style abortion scene, and the booty rape scene was too much!!! I really wanted to stop watching this movie after the dad dropped those kids out of the window. I did watch it all the way to the end because I didn't want anybody telling me, "You should have finished watching the movie, it had a happy ending". There was not a happy ending and if I had really known that the movie was going to turn out the way that it did, I never would have watched it period. I love comedy movies and movies with happy endings.

I have to tip my hat to Tyler Perry on this one and I think he should take the Oscar award home with him, but I have no intentions of ever watching it again. Maybe it's just me but the realities of this movie was very harsh and scarry for me. I watched this movie a few days ago and still haven't gotten over it. I have watched a lot of scarry, horror movies and out of all of the horror movies that I have ever seen they have never had the mental impact on me that this movie had...I tip my hat to Tyler Perry, yes in my opinion, Colored Girls is his best work yet :-) :-) :-) !!!
