530139, Recommend me some good horror flicks
Posted by TheMindFrame, Thu Aug-05-10 11:11 PM
I've been out of the country for the last year and a half and I don't know what I've missed. Help me out folks. I watched Event Horizon on Blue Ray the other day and remembered how much I liked that movie. I'm not into the Saw genre or shit like that but if you can think of good horror flicks to rent or cop, let me know please.
530151, Funny Games was quite good
Posted by Wrongthink, Fri Aug-06-10 12:39 AM
Came out a few years ago. Remake of the german version by the same director, fairly serious and clever. Tim Roth, Naomi Watts.

530298, Cosign Funny Games...

but I will warn you, that movie is intense as fuck.

Some other faves of mine that I haven't seen mentioned yet are 28 Days Later and the sequel 28 Weeks Later. Both are really well done zombie flicks with really iconic scenes/sequences that will stick with you for a long time afterwards.
530959, Yeah funny at times & unconventional horror but very disturbing.

531045, Possible spoiler here:

I've thought and read alot about that movie.

It's interesting to watch with the following perspective:

The two villians are real people who exist inside a horror movie. In this way, it's actually a critique of escapism in film wherein we think we can explore amoral themes without moral culpability.

So it's actually an 'anti-horror movie'.
531047, I don't think there's any arguing it's an anti-horror movie
Posted by Wrongthink, Fri Aug-13-10 01:57 AM
and that Haneke was making a statement against horror movies and escapism, but that's an interesting read about them being real people.
531048, RE: I don't think there's any arguing it's an anti-horror movie
Posted by denny, Fri Aug-13-10 02:11 AM
If you think about it....Every character in the movie are surreal cliches except the villains. In this interpretation, the villains represent the audience (or typical horror movie fans).

So the real villain of this movie is the audience. (us)
531075, blah blah blah.....
Posted by denny, Fri Aug-13-10 09:07 AM
I'm gonna geek out a little here cause it's been a couple years since I seen the film and I've been thinking about it this morning.

It seems like Hanake is differentiating between what I'll call an 'intrinsic morality' and a 'pragmatic morality'.

With a pragmatic morality....if one were to find themselves inside a horror movie (like the villains in 'funny games') there would be no moral perogative to NOT kill a dog....NOT kill a child....NOT kill a family because there are no 'real-world' consequences. No real victims.

But an intrinsic morality results in different behaviour under such circumstances. If you find yourself in the surreal confines of a horror movie....or a lucid dream....or a sexual fantasy....your actions are guided by an internal sense of right and wrong. So even if there are no 'real-world' consequences, you still behave in accordance to an intrinsic moral code....for it's own sake.

Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
Scanners
Hostel 1 and 2
The Shining
Jaws
Alien 1,2 and 3
Teeth
Misery
Nightbreed
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Sutherland, Nimoy version)
Psycho
The Thing
Blair Witch Project
Rosemary's Baby
Frailty
American Psycho
Open Water
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Black Christmas
Silence of the Lambs + Red Dragon

Lots more I can't think of now but I that's a pretty good list imo.
530324, open water? really?
Posted by crow, Sat Aug-07-10 10:47 AM
I couldnt stand that flick, but I do know people who loved it
530327, I think it's great.
Posted by denny, Sat Aug-07-10 11:27 AM
I like the psychological change in the characters and their relationship. Like a typically good horror movie....the slow realization that they're doomed...the stages of anger, denial, exhaustion, acceptance. They start out supportive of each other...then start blaming each other...then return to supporting each other. It's a movie about marraige really.
530403, I'll scope it out again
Posted by crow, Sun Aug-08-10 03:59 PM
Come at it with a more open mind or less expectations something of the sort.
530325, The French have had the best horror flicks recently
Posted by crow, Sat Aug-07-10 10:51 AM
If you don't mind subtitles some goodies:

Inside
Martyrs(warning: this movie fucked me up and thats a feat)
High Tension
Frontiers

Others:
The Descent
Audition(Japanese)
Dog Soldiers
Dawn of the Dead(remake)

530452, cosign on The Descent

i also like Thirst.. and REC has to get a mention. (avoid the pointless american remake though, 'Quarantine')

it's a bit older but i just watched The Burrowers last night. was surprisingly good for what is essentially a b movie

530594, hell, even the 2nd one was better than most films
Posted by crow, Mon Aug-09-10 09:58 PM
I fully expected it to be a shitstorm but it was decent...not brilliant like the first one but decent
530604, Maybe I should try 'The Descent' again.
Posted by denny, Mon Aug-09-10 11:51 PM
Perhaps I wasn't in the mood but it didn't leave a big impression on me. I remember thinking the feminist angle was kinda interesting but the concept seemed a little silly to me.

But it's one of those films that alot people seem to really like. Any comments as to what made it good to you?

I think I'll check out the sequel tonight.

530717, i liked it a lot in the theater. on dvd it was just ok.
Posted by DawgEatah, Tue Aug-10-10 03:23 PM
i think the environment of having a larger than life screen, huge sound, a collective audience and sitting in the dark with no outside distractions lended heavily to the scariness of that movie.

With all the sounds around you and the dark claustrophobic feeling, it did a lot for the film
530792, I checked it out again.
Posted by denny, Wed Aug-11-10 10:25 AM
Better than I remembered. Still haven't watched 2 yet but the first one is definitely a quality film.
530621, Yeah, I loved the first one, really liked the 2nd
Posted by TheMindFrame, Tue Aug-10-10 07:25 AM

I wouldn't even be mad if they milked it for a trilogy
530328, Thanks ya'll, keep 'em coming.

I Can See You
Trigger Man

non-American:
Calvaire
Left Bank
Trouble Every Day
531034, Second that House of the Devil

watched it on a whim, and it's got some seriously nice atmosphere going on. Set in the late 70s, early 80s ... really keeps the feel of movies from that time.

Anyone seen that? Just watched it tonight.

Crispin Glover...a performance of a lifetime. Can't recommend this movie more. The score is a little too much at times but the cinematography is beautiful and the script is great.
530716, Let the Right One In
Posted by DawgEatah, Tue Aug-10-10 03:21 PM
It's a foreign film.
There is a US remake coming out soon.
I suggest watching the original since it is so awesome and we don't know how good the remake will be.

I liked it more than The Host which I enjoyed (except the humor). It's about a mother trying to prove her son's innocence in a teenage girl's murder.
530964, and just like that *snap*

I think you'll definitely find some parts of the movie interesting. I can't recall if you've seen the director's Memories of Murder. That's a near-masterpiece.
531052, RE: I like the funny horror genre
Posted by denny, Fri Aug-13-10 02:18 AM
Sean of the Dead is the gift that never stops giving.

The script is so dense and clever without ever getting too cloudy. I think I've seen it 10 times and could watch it again.
531053, If you like the comedy/horror thing...
Posted by denny, Fri Aug-13-10 03:19 AM
You must see 'Teeth'.

Written and directed by the son of Roy Lichtenstein (pixalated archie comics pop artist).

Vagina with teeth + Progressive politics + Hilarity.

Available on youtube as per the wishes of the writer/director
531100, I actually just watched this 2 weeks ago
Posted by Dae021, Fri Aug-13-10 12:02 PM
It was cool, I thought it was a pretty fresh idea, and I really liked how it played out.
530775, The first Saw and The Descent...
Posted by phenompyrus, Wed Aug-11-10 06:08 AM
Both are great, more recent, horror flicks.

The remakes of Dawn of the Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are great recent ones too.

OG movies, like the original Chainsaw Massacre, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Child's Play, you can't go wrong with them either.
530961, Here's a few...
