505249, Netflix Streaming Hidden Gems..
Posted by jswerve386, Wed Feb-24-10 01:40 AM
Just got onto this streaming Netflix joint.. Maybe we can use this as a running post with flicks you may have seen that are recommended.

I saw these movies over the weekend (Stayed in Sick) and loved them.

The Orphanage:

Fueled by fond memories from her childhood, Laura (Belén Rueda) persuades her husband (Fernando Cayo) to help her revamp a seaside orphanage into a facility for disabled children. But soon after the couple moves in, their son, Simón (Roger Príncep), begins exhibiting disturbing behavior. As Laura tries to understand Simón's increasingly malevolent actions, she becomes drawn into the house's terrifying secrets in this unnerving chiller.

Kidulthood:

In this gritty, powerful drama about lost innocence, classes are suspended when a schoolgirl who's been bullied one too many times hangs herself, allowing a clique of tough-as-nails teenagers have free reign of the inner city streets. And within the unforgiving confines of the concrete jungle that these kids call home, sex, drugs and violence are just business as usual in the daily struggle to survive.

A Very British Gangster:

In this 2007 Sundance Film Festival entry, director Donal MacIntyre paints an intimate cinematic portrait of Dominic Noonan, the head of one of Britain's largest organized crime families. Alongside brother Desmond, Noonan is alleged to have committed more than 25 murders in his two-decade reign of terror. Filmmakers reveal the notorious gangster's inner circle and influence in a town stricken with abject poverty and violence.

Gangster No. 1:

This story follows the violent rise and fall of the title character, an unnamed East End London thug (played by Paul Bettany and, at a later age, Malcolm McDowell) who gets hired by high-profile gangster Freddie Mays (David Thewlis). The eager young gun -- an irredeemable, inhumane psychopath obsessed with power -- eventually replaces his boss as top gangster by way of lies, manipulation and murder

The Counterfeiters:

Facing an ethical quandary, Jewish master forger Salomon Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics) must choose between abetting the Nazis and saving his own skin in this taut, Oscar-winning drama based on actual events during World War II. Assembled at a death camp, a cadre of printers, artists and chiselers is tasked with counterfeiting currencies to weaken Allied economies. But will Sorowitsch's conscience begin to gnaw at him as the war draws to a close?

I don't know why Paul is stuck doing shit like Legion when obviously dude has some talent. I'll have to peep the rest of those flicks this weekend.

Ive been really into all things British lately.. I think you'll like Kidulthood too.. youre right about Paul.. I think hes chasing American fame and $$'s.. you can only make indie movies that no one really sees for so long before being tempted by bullshit like Legion. shame really.

Sin Nombre - Already mentioned. I thought this would have received near-but-not-as-much-City-of-God-love in PTP.

Chop Shop - Takes place in Queens' Iron Triangle. I have no idea why this and Sin Nombre haven't received a huge following in PTP.

Man Push Cart - Directed by the same guy who did Chop Shop. A great film about the life of an immigrant in contemporary NYC. The director's sense of place as in Chop Shop is first-rate.

Shotgun Stories - Has already been mentioned but I'll mention it again. It's a slow burner about revenge but also about violence and family. One of my favorites of the past decade and relatively one of the most criminally neglected high quality American films in years. I also think it's one of the most impressive feature debuts in years, shit, of all-time. It was well-received critically by those that have seen it, but this flick should have blown up more in PTP and elsewhere.

Revanche - Just got released by Criterion and had a very very limited theatrical release in 2009 so PTPers sleeping on it is understandable. Like Shotgun Stories, it's a slow burner on revenge. One of my favorites of the past decade.

Fat City - Directed by John Huston with cinematography by Conrad Fuckin' Hall and a great performance from Stacy Keach and a very good young Jeff Bridges. Fat City and Body and Soul are my 2 favorite boxing non-documentary films. One of the best American films of the 70s. The DVD is OOP and Netflix doesn't carry it so...

On the Ropes - A great boxing documentary that I have seen mentioned just once on the boards.

Munyurangabo - Makes a great double bill with Hotel Rwanda. It's a small scale film. The relative neglect of this film saddens me.

More later.
505598, Shotgun Stories was great
Posted by johnny_domino, Thu Feb-25-10 12:17 PM
I liked but didn't love Sin Nombre and Chop Shop.

Will definitely try to check out Revanche and the boxing documentary.
515625, Revanche was very, very good.

How does it not have its own thread?

I want to give it 4 stars, but I'd have to let it settle more.

The only thing I didn't like was the husband was pretty one-note. His piece of the story felt repetitive and overdone.

Best movie I've seen in a while.
515836, RE: Revanche was very, very good.
Posted by Sponge, Mon May-03-10 07:02 AM
>How does it not have its own thread?

I thought about it, but went against it because I think having a relatively unheard-of-film's title associated with a post with 5 or fewer replies and 120 or fewer views would hurt it. Guess I should've made one when the Criterion dropped, but that would've probably gotten, like, 0 replies and 200 views. Again, I didn't want a negative association. Instead, I opted to champion it in here and the Spilled Latte and Jujyfruits related posts.

Posted by Mynoriti, Tue Mar-16-10 08:44 PM
this might have been a decent movie in someone elses hands. the whole thrill-seeking rich white girl fucking around with thugs is a fairly real phenomenon, but both groups of people were ridiculously cartoonish

the Pali high whiteboys walking around saying "yo yo yo", like they learned to act black from watching Robin Williams. The cholos with their horribly fake looking tattoos were your average after school special gang members. Freddy Rodriguez was awful. He's a good actor, but i pray he never tries to play anyone remotely tough again.

Anne was pretty yummy tho.

Three of Shane Meadows streaming on there. Saw This in England last year, liked it a lot, so watched a more recent one, Somers Town, last night. Liked it a lot too, so watched Dead Man's Shoes tonight...

Got to say, all three were really good, but Dead Man's Shoes hit me pretty strongly, despite seeming at first like a formulaic revenge flick. Paddy Considine is intense as hell...the movie feels incredibly dark and bitter, not sentimental or cathartic as the 'vengeance' is realized. Just pulled off really well. I read something to the effect that it, too, was based upon the director's experiences, which didn't surprise me ---the anger was so concentrated it felt personal.

Also saw Trucker (dir: James Mottern) which is loosely related in appearing like a movie cliche but pulled off so well it doesn't matter. "Reckless adult discovers child they never knew and grows in touch with their feelings," that kind of thing, but well-made and similarly lacking in schmaltzy sentimentality. Non-pandering, and more moving as a result.

Satire documentary "party youth culture" or whatever you wanna call it. Pretty funny.

-The Tick - Complete Series

Lost would be much better if Richard was actually Batmanuel

-Tender Is The Heart

Corny ass skinemax type softcore porn that was incredibly hilarious to me for some reason. Watching it with a lady friend and getting our MST3K on added to it I guess.

-Pee Wee's Big Adventure

I hadn't seen this since I was a kid, so I never actually knew it was a Tim Burton movie. That explains everything. And Pee Wee Herman is one of the creepiest movie characters of all time.

the streaming on the PS3 feature is truly stellar. It's a little annoying that you need a disc or that you can't manage the queue on the screen, but other than that it's been a revolution for me. I don't think I've sent for a disc through mail since getting this, and it's definitely made me more proactive in my movie choices, considering not everything is available to stream yet. Although all the Criterion titles are, which is a godsend.
511100, if by stellar you mean slightly lower pq than on the 360

but it works about as well as it does on any of the other blu-ray players it's on, or on the new wii disc.

I'm not enjoying the interface on the tivo premiere however, leaves much to be desired compared to the other options.

but its been a while since I've seen it.

Real talk: Tilda Swinton *HAS* to be one the G.O.A.T. actresses..seriously.

i mean, who else has had the resume she's had? everything she does is the shit...hell, she's played a man convincingly TWICE (Orlando-1992 a *MUST* see and Constantine-2006/2006 as the Angel Gabriel)

Julia

Had heard so much about it, and in particular the brilliance of Swinton's performance. Well, I found Tilda to be overdoing it A LOT. She was on some 90s-00s Al Pacino steez in this joint w/ the overacting. The movie itself was 45 minutes too long also. And I really didn't buy the main character's transformation throughout the movie, nor the fact that the kid got kidnapped after being kidnapped. Just kinda felt like the movie was a big mess.

Sin Nombre

Didn't really get into ANY of the performances, and it ultimately seemed like just another gang movie. No more, no less. The whole flick felt extremely predictable, and I felt like I know what was going to happen next the entire time.

Starring Adam Scott (Henry in "Party Down"; now on "Parks and Recreation" and ESPN's MLB commercials). Nominated for 2 Independent Spirit Awards (Best Screenplay and Scott for Best Male Lead). Weighty material, but manages to be funny. Good flick.

Netflix description:
When angry Caleb Sinclaire (Adam Scott) reluctantly agrees to drive his younger brother, Peter, and Peter's girlfriend, Emma Gainsborough (Brittany Snow), home for Thanksgiving, he finds himself attracted to his brother's pretty companion. Before long, his desire morphs into an obsession that could either completely unhinge the family -- or be the catalyst he needs to confront feelings he has long repressed. J.K. Simmons and Alex Frost co-star.

Quaint romantic comedy that's smart and sweet. Josh Hamilton stars. You may remember him as the stuck-up roommate in that Homeless Joe Pesci at Harvard film "With Honors". NBC has made it into a sitcom that's premiering this fall after "The Office." I really enjoyed it. Clever premise.

Netflix description:
When his department is outsourced to India, customer call center manager Todd Anderson (Josh Hamilton) heads to Mumbai to train his successor (Asif Basra), and amusing culture clashes ensue as Anderson tries to explain American business practices to the befuddled new employees. In the process, he learns important lessons about globalization -- and life. Ayesha Dharker and Matt Smith also star in director John Jeffcoat's cross-cultural comedy.

-Lose yourself in this riveting documentary that chronicles the rise and ignoble fall of Troy Duffy, a bartender whose script for The Boondock Saints was picked up by Miramax bigwig Harvey Weinstein and made into a film. Like a freight train careening out of control, the arrogant Duffy -- once considered Hollywood's new wunderkind -- burns all his bridges, alienating his colleagues, his friends and his long-suffering brother, Taylor.

This penetrating documentary from director Billy Corben pulls out all the stops to explore the many dimensions of Miami's cocaine-trafficking boom of the 1980s, as told by the smugglers, cops and average citizens who were there. The film is an unflinching study of Miami's most notorious and lethal vice -- from how the drug was moved and its financial impact on the city to the havoc and violence that followed in its wake.

I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary from beginning to end. I like how it showed how folks enjoyed the fruits of the drug game and how it seemed all was good at the beginning before things went tumbling down due to violence.

Pleasantly surprised by this one. Robin Williams at perhaps his most subdued, and that's a good thing in this role. Dark subject matter but it's smart and has a lot of heart.

NETFLIX SYNOPSIS
After his son (Daryl Sabara) dies in an awkward freak accident, high school poetry teacher Lance (Robin Williams) ghostwrites a suicide note to spare the family embarrassment. But when the note becomes an unexpected hit, Lance sees a chance to resurrect his writing career. In a bid for literary fame, Lance writes his son's journal and passes it off as his own. Writer-director Bob Goldthwait's comedy debuted at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

Miami Blues - great crime thriller

Across 110th Street - for 70s movie fans; great use of location shooting and music by Womack and Peace

Electra Glide in Blue - relatively overlooked 70s gem; OOP DVD; great cinematography by Conrad Fuckin' Hall

Samurai Rebellion - excellent samurai pic; expertly constructed narrative

The Heartbreak Kid - the original comedy classic by Elaine May from the 70s; great performance by Charles Grodin; if you like uncomfortable comedy, check it out

Big Night - a great food / chef / restaurant movie

Topkapi - entertaining heist flick from the great Jules Dassin who made the heist masterpiece Rififi

This Sporting Life - if you like British kitchen sink film, see it; Rachel Roberts is incredible in it; Richard Harris is intense

Salaam Bombay - if you like neorealist type of films, check it out

I Am Cuba - if you want to see great camera movement and bold compositions, check it out

Objectified - I'm personally not a fan of this doc about industrial design; I found it underwhelming and not that informative / insightful save for a few segments, but there should be a couple of people here interested in it

Two Friends - employs a subtle slow-burning use of reverse narrative

somebody help me - this joint had omarion and marquez houston in it and the girl from sister sister/kim fields little sister. not a great movie, actually pretty cheesy at times but it was fun. the suspense and horror of the film was kinda offset by the reality that neither of the two lead guys are likely candidates to save anyone ever from any danger. it was hard to dispel reality when watching this flick. in my mind i kept thinking that omarion and marquez would challenge the killer to a dance off or some shit. but again, it was cheesy and fun at the same time. not sure if that was the effect they were going for.

Then, suddenly, their graceful scams turn into an ugly mess when they unwittingly smuggle illegal immigrants. Most of their illegal cargo escapes, but out from the back of the truck stumble two kids. Now, the guys must decide what to do with the tykes in this suspenseful British crime caper.

This is a little gem of a flick.
Not spectacular, by any means, but well worth it's time.
It's from the '40s, a murder mystery revolving around the fortune of a man who died 13 years ago and the family trying to get it.
It's pretty funny, very witty. The black and white is a little on the too grainy side, but more-than-manageable.
It's also only an hour long - so it'll only take up as much time as another bad CSI episode.
Oh, and for some reason, it's never been released on DVD or VHS. So how Netflix managed to leap frog it onto their queue I'll never get but be most grateful for.

Haven't seen it yet, but I've heard good things.

From Netflix:
In this Greek drama, siblings who grow up cut off from the world -- homeschooled and dependent on one another for entertainment -- develop their own blissful alternative universe. That universe is shattered when their father lets in an outsider. Sex enters the picture when dad begins bringing home a female security officer to satisfy his son's sexual needs. Suddenly, nothing is quite the same within this highly idiosyncratic family unit.
552388, watched it last night (tks for the heads-up)
Posted by benny, Sat Jan-29-11 02:24 PM
writing was kinda clunky at the start, but as the story unfolds it becomes quite fascinating. I thought it had very interesting things to say about family, and on a more symbolic level governments and how they treat their citizens. Quite topical when you see what's going on in Egypt right now.
552455, Panic in the Streets: streaming for one more day says Netflix.

So I guess you gotta get on it quick, but it's definitely worth it.

Dude with pneumonic plague is bumped off. Health Services and the police department have a tense 48 hours to track down anyone who might have come in contact with him, especially his killers, before an epidemic breaks out. Suspenseful and extremely well-acted, including a badass gangster turn from Jack Palance.

Oh, and it's set in New Orleans and directed by Elia Kazan.
552465, Maren Ade
Posted by benny, Sun Jan-30-11 11:52 AM
Ade is a German filmmaker who got some great reviews on the movie she directed last year, Everyone Else. That, and her first flick The Forest For The Trees are both available on Instant.
Haven't seen Everyone Else yet, but TFFTT is really good. It's about a young teacher who starts a job in a new town and has trouble settling in. Pretty painful to watch at times (kinda like the answering machine scene from Swingers stretched over a whole movie) because of the awkwardness of many scenes, but Eva Lobau gives a remarkable performance as the teacher, and the naturalistic way the movie was shot (on video), while distracting at first, ends up pulling you in.
There's been a noticeable buzz created around German directors these days (Christoph Hochhausler and Benjamin Heisenberg are the others I've heard about), here's hoping this leads to better distribution of their movies. And not to them trying to pull a Henckel von Donnersmarck n/m.

Golden Globe winner and nominated by several awards orgs for multiple categories. Haven't seen it yet but I remember a post or 2 about the film that I can't find anymore and I know there were a few OKPs wanting to see it so I figured I'd give a heads up.

Édgar Ramírez stars as Ilich Ramírez Sánchez -- aka Carlos the Jackal -- an elusive Venezuelan terrorist who executed scores of assassination plots, abductions and bombings across Europe and the Middle East. This Golden Globe-winning biopic follows Sanchez from 1973 to 1994 as he and his cohorts wreak havoc on the Left Bank in Paris, storm OPEC headquarters in Vienna and carry out other devastating acts of politically motivated violence. http://movies.netflix.com/Movie/Mesrine_Part_1_Killer_Instinct/70107140?trkid=2361637#height1796

This blistering biopic stars Vincent Cassel as notorious French gangster Jacques Mesrine. The first in a duology, the film details the genesis of Mesrine's career, including an incident in the army that gave him his first taste of violent power. Gerard Depardieu co-stars in this commanding, stylish film (based on the autobiography Mesrine wrote shortly before breaking out of prison), which has been favorably compared to Brian DePalma's Scarface.

Jacques Mesrine (Vincent Cassel) finds his star rising throughout the 1970s as both a gangster and a publicity-hungry celebrity. But while his criminal plans are as grandiose as ever, the Paris police are redoubling their efforts with a special anti-Mesrine unit. The conclusion to Jean-François Richet's epic crime biopic also stars the luminous Ludivine Sagnier as Mesrine's glamorous Italian lover, Sylvia Jeanjacquot.

Oliver Stone Presents: Bang Rajan

2000 NR 118 minutes

Oliver Stone helped bring this oft-forgotten story -- set in the 18th-century Thai village of Bang Rajan, where 11 villagers stood their ground as the Burmese army invaded -- to U.S. theaters. Armed with only machetes, the brave few were up against an army of 100,000. Providing background, the film begins with the ascension of King Mang Ra of Burma, whose invasion of Thai territory aimed to shrink the country's ruling arm.

>From renowned director Aleksandr Sokurov comes a piercing historical drama about Japan's emperor Hirohito at the end of World War II. Faced with his country's defeat and the renunciation of his divine status, Hirohito must establish his own identity. Sokurov's exquisite cinematography accentuates this examination of diplomacy and personal responsibility as Hirohito agrees to meet with American Gen. MacArthur in an attempt to move Japan forward.

Pretty Dope movie if you are into history.. Its a bit similar to Downfall as it shows the last hours basically before Hirohito surrendered to MacArthur.

neither are 'hidden gems', but the addition is NICE.

http://www.avclub.com/articles/netflix-tightens-its-hold-on-you-by-adding-mad-men,54186/

Combining two of our favorite Newswire subjects—things that you can watch on Netflix and people giving money to Mad Men—the streaming colossus has announced that it has snapped up the syndication rights to the AMC series, paying Lionsgate somewhere between $750,000 and $900,000 per episode for the privilege of being the only place (besides AMC and DVDs, of course) where you can watch old episodes. Like the recent bid to exclusively air the David Fincher/Kevin Spacey drama House Of Cards, it’s one more indication that Netflix is out to be seen as a next-generation network, and that it is not to be trifled with, should you be thinking of doing that.

The announcement also comes a few days after Netflix signed a new deal with Twentieth Century Fox that expanded its current streaming options to include the first season of Glee, the first two seasons of Sons Of Anarchy, and David E. Kelley’s first volley in the war against feminism, Ally McBeal. Best of all, that deal includes The Wonder Years, a series that’s been all but impossible to relive lately unless you get Discovery Channel spinoff The Hub, as music rights issues have kept it from being released on DVD. Netflix has reportedly solved this by overdubbing every ‘60s hit with Grieg’s “In The Hall Of The Mountain King.” (Or maybe not; the press release doesn’t really say.)

Comedy writer Christopher Morris makes his feature directorial debut with this outrageous comedy about a group of young Islamic Brits who fancy themselves bloodthirsty jihadis of the first order. The film showcases Morris's satirical talents at their vicious best in a scathingly hilarious indictment of true believers and the social systems that create them. Viewers took note and bestowed it the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the L.A. Film Festival.

BUT they only have the first two volumes streaming. Waiting patiently for 3 and 4.

Moribito is a really good watch. Great storytelling all around.

Soul Eater takes the shonen genre and adequately turns it on it's side. Same power hogging fights and all that but just a touch more style and a definite ending.

Tokyo Majin I remeber starting very strong but somehow I have no clue how it ended and that may be a very telling sign. Give it a shot to see how you like it.

Last Exile is a rather well thought out exercise in world building with some OK drama but finding out what the deal is why these characters are living the way they are is possibly the most interesting thing about the show. Great art and flying/fighting sequences too.

Sengoku Basara is quite possibly one of the greatest video game adaptations ever because they just go with how ridiculous the games were in the first place and crank it up to 11 from there.

Just noticed that they also have Mu Shi Shi and if you like moody, mystery, ghost type stuff it's one of the best shows ever.

>After barely surviving an intensely grueling boot camp in Uzbekistan, an eclectic group of recently enlisted Soviet soldiers ships off to fight in Afghanistan, where they must endure hellish conditions and extremely dangerous Mujahideen forces. Based on a true story from the 1980s, this rousing Russian war film about camaraderie and heroism stars Aleksey Chadov, Artur Smolyaninov and Konstantin Kryukov.

564393, Following (Chris Nolan's second movie, blueprint for Memento, Fountain and Inception)
Posted by Nodima, Sun May-01-11 08:52 AM
Or at least it felt that way. 70 minutes. Premise is a lonely young man who claims to be an aspiring writer is explaining to an older man about his strange habit of spotting a random person in public and following them just to see where they go. This segment, which takes up about the first ten minutes of the movie, had me thinking Following was racing up my list of favorite movies ever. The actual storyline of the movie is ripe with clichés, but there are two or three really beautiful shots and it's just interesting to see Nolan's mind at work within the confines of a low budget, 16mm B&W indie film.

Oh, and it's a whodunit sort of movie.

Saw the Mack the other night and I was tripping at all the lines I knew from hip-hop samples, plus I mean the storyline was fairly weak but the performance by the lead dude (From my favorite childhood movie Def Jam's How to Be a Player!) and Pryor's cameos had me laughing like crazy. Some stuff was stupid but he really had being a cold hearted pimp down, that was a real ass performance right there.

I got all these Pam Grier and Shaft movies queued up right now can't even keep count. God bless streaming on the PS3.

570996, Is The Vedict the best thing Lumet ever directed?
Posted by ricky_BUTLER, Mon Jun-27-11 06:47 PM
A multiple-Academy Award nominated film directed by Sidney Lumet,
written by David Mamet, and starring Paul Newman, James Mason, Jack
Warden, and Charlotte Rampling probably doesn't qualify as hidden,
but I had ignorantly and regrettably passed it by for a long while
now. If you haven't seen it still, don't pass it by as well.

Neck-and-neck with Anatomy of a Murder as far as courtroom dramas.

Probably surpassing Hud as Newman's most fully-realized performance.

Less showy than 12 Angry Men or Network, but maybe Lumet's best
showcase of skill nonetheless.

Every character gets a moment but never comes off as contrived.

The courtroom procedural stuff feels every inch authentic.

It's tense and gripping while also reflective and somber at times.

Plot and character surprises are revealed precisely and never seem put on.

Lumet was hardly the most visually striking director, but the framing
here, settling primarily for observant static long shots, is superb,
and again the story unfolds gracefully and with great expertise.

This is an animated series from the 80s. I loved it as a kid. it's even better watching it as an adult. now only if they bring Belle and Sebastian to Netflix, ill be set.

Richard Pryor's dramatic debut, about three broke auto workers (Pryor, Harvey Keitel, Yaphet Kotto) who decide to rob the union

It never got a DVD release. it was on instant before, then disappeared, now it's back. It's fucking great, though

It did, but the Region 1 is OOP. However, it's currently available via on demand DVD-R printing from Amazon as part of the Universal Vault series. I have the Region 2 DVD.

Yup.

If it weren't for directorial missteps in the ending sequence, I would've considered it a minor masterpiece.

Also, should we lock this post and start a new one?

with football season nearly over, i got back into the netflix game. here's are some of my memorable finds:

Dehli Belly:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/delhi_belly_2011/

Kill The Irishman:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the-irishman/

I had no idea what Dehli Belly was about going into the movie, but I ended up really liking it.

Kill The Irishman reminded me a lot of Goodfellas. It chronicles the life of a Irish mobster over the course of 10 or so years. The movie is based on a true story.

I also hopped on Blue Mountain State and The Hard Times of RJ Berger. Both shows are good for some cheap laughs.

Posted by kayru99, Tue Mar-26-13 09:35 AM
Man, look. There is some great acting in this movie by the lead (who's a kabuki star), and some pretty cool nods to Kabuki in the climatic scene. But really, the middle part of this movie is some of the saddest shit I've watched in a while. Really heart-rending tragedy, that made *ME* wanna kick somebody's ass.

Shouts out to the baby in the movie who may have been acted by Daniel Day Lewis in an uncredited cameo.

Highly recommended
