504850, I recently started watching Star Trek DS9, saw the Hulk and JLU movies
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Mon Feb-22-10 10:40 AM
I'm enjoying DS9 a lot more than I thought I would. I'm six episodes in, really interesting premise.

I do hope A Man Called Hawk chills out a little on the acting tip. I think he's overcompensating. I'm curious if the show creators envisioned a black man in role of Cisko.

If so, I think I understand what's going on here. Waiting for the code switch when he goes bald and starts backhanding Cardassians.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/92/BenSisko.jpg/250px-BenSisko.jpg

Cardassians!!!!!!!!

Anway, I liked Planet Hulk, a lot. I didn't read the comic so I don't care about what was missing. I'm just wondering how dude became articulate and never reverted to being Bruce Banner.

Yo, the two JLU movies I've seen are fiyah. The latest one and the one from when they were in the 60s. WB has been killing it with their animateds.

504930, DS9 is dope
Posted by 13Rose, Mon Feb-22-10 04:39 PM
I've started watching it again from the beginning as well. I think after season 1 it gets a lot better. I've always been a TNG man myself so I always gave DS9 a side eye. It's a strong Star Trek series.
504946, I tought about tackling TNG first but I figured if I didn't like DS9 I
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Mon Feb-22-10 05:58 PM
wouldn't like any of the shows and I like Jean Luc. But ever since In Living Color or whatever show it was clowned, I never looked at it the same.
505144, It gets a LOT better after season 1
Posted by nipsey, Tue Feb-23-10 04:19 PM
By the end of season 2, it really starts to get good, and then once the midpoint of season 3 hits, it's high quality television all the way up until the end of season 7. In some ways, it's better than TNG. TNG was the GOAT to me, but I love DS9's conflict and the serial nature of the show. There was no darned reset button!

There are actually a lot of good eps in the first two seasons. It started for alot stronger than TNG. I was surprised when I watched it from the start.
506621, Easily the best ep. of the first season...
Posted by KwesiAkoKennedy, Wed Mar-03-10 11:08 AM
Primarily because Kira had lean how to be more objective about the Cardassians but also because she was confronted with one that was possibly just as damaged as she was over what had happened there.
506673, This was a good episode but I disliked Kira so much I probably couldn't
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Wed Mar-03-10 01:50 PM
appreciate it as much. I also liked Vortex a lot.

"indeed not."

Thanks to you guys I'm watching this from the start. There's so much stuff for shadowed even in the first handfull of eps, it's kinda scary how so many hard core Trek fans wrote it off from jump. Just about everything they brought to the table they fleshed out and expanded on rather nicely. Even extending Garak into more than just a one time character paid off wonderfully for the show.
505724, Garak is one of the best characters in Star Trek
Posted by nipsey, Thu Feb-25-10 09:00 PM
He's definitely the best character on DS-9.

it was such a blatant rip off of babylon 5 i suggest you watch that show if you can get your hands on it
506172, I just finished season 1 and on to S2 some quick thoughts
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Mon Mar-01-10 11:44 AM
I think they should have ended S1 with the beginning of S2.
The Bajoran political intrigue has been great and would have been a great way to wind up s1.

That said I like most of the filler eps, very entertaining.

Quark is one of my favorite characters. His back and forth with Odo is really entertaining. And pretty much any ep focused on the Ferengis has been great. The rules of acquisition yo.

There have been some lines on this show that have made me guffaw outload.

I dislike Major Kira. Wow she's 90% annoying. I don't want her to die but man, she sucks.

Dax is a very interesting character. They don't obsess on her back story and keep her mysterious without hitting it over your head that she's mysterious (hello Lost).

The Doctor is pretty funny too. Dude is on a mission to smash.

I hope they don't kill off Ensign Brother Man too quick.

I saw a few more AMCH foreshadows.

You know their doing something right when the kids aren't annoying.
506238, Kira gets better
Posted by The_Orange_Ninja_Turtle, Mon Mar-01-10 04:06 PM
less annoying, she's one of the best by the end of the series.
506354, good to know. She's already fallen back since her temporary demotion

513664, Kira def got on my nerve at first too
Posted by Kahlema, Wed Apr-14-10 04:51 PM
but she grows on you.

Dax is ok, she's actually one of the dullest female lead characters on the show.

DS9 and TNG tie for my favorite Star Trek series. Though DS9 is a stationary place, the diversity of the characters and conflicts makes it just great.
506216, Oh snap Salli Richardson!

506454, Yeah man!

Blood oath and the Maquis I and II were enthralling
But wow from The Jem'Hadar into s3 eps 1 and 2!

I mean you guys weren't lyin. And man, I was not ready for Odo's people to be the Founders and for them to have run those simulations on the crew? That was ill. I'm still not sure the changlings are running the show though. And ya'll said it gets better too?
I'm addicted already.

>Blood oath and the Maquis I and II were enthralling
>But wow from The Jem'Hadar into s3 eps 1 and 2!

Season 2 started really strong but fell off a bit by trying to conform to Star Trek formula with eps. like Meloara. Not bad but it was a lot of what we have seen before with TNG and outsider character ensign Barklay.

When they deal mainly with the Bajoran Wormhole/Gamma Quadrant area politics and maneuvering, it's a very strong show. Even with Bernie Casey's wooden delivery, Maquis was a couple of dope episodes that went in the face of the usual Federation people are reasonable and work to make things fair. Those cats had their backs up against the wall and were left out in the cold. They took the only path reasonable in that situation. Unfortunately they radicalized and started taking really foolish risks.

Also, the majority of episodes lead to conclusions that were not necessarily happy or fair. It seems the writers were not afraid to avoid the usual reset for everyone by the end of an ep. and that gave the show and future events that play off some of those bitter victories a lot more weight.

One final thing that DS9 solidifies by the end. Quark is a G. Really. That fool runs things when he's in a groove. Wait for the ep. House of Quark where he makes a surprisingly effective turn of events on Klingon of all places.
508241, I know what ep you're referring to. I fell asleep on it and KIM
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Wed Mar-10-10 05:09 PM
But I'll watch it again off the strength of your rec. I like Quark a lot. Him and Odo are great as are O'Brien and Bashir. Great chemistry.

Speaking of O'Brien, I noticed he got waaaay more feature time in season 2. It was almost as if they were overcompensating, like I wonder if he got mad he wasn't gettin the shine he felt he deserved.

508270, The lack of the "reset button" was one of the best things of DS9
Posted by nipsey, Wed Mar-10-10 07:47 PM
that and the "serial" nature of the show.

Benjamin Sisko might already be one of the greatest black characters in TV history.

Posted by KwesiAkoKennedy, Wed Mar-10-10 04:07 PM
Yep.

Also, the singing Klingon chef on the promenade is Bleeding Gums Murphy and the original Audry II from Little Shop of Horrors.

Edit:

Went to Wikipedia and got my mind blown. Has nothing to do with black actors but Kor, Kang and Koloth were from the original Star Trek. Actors too. The actor playing Kor is the original Baltar from 1970's Battlestar Galactca. Thing is Kor, takes center stage a few more times in the series and his last appearance on the show coincides with the actors death.
508240, I saw that. I love that level of overlap. I ain't even know about Tom Riker
Posted by cheap skeiht killa, Wed Mar-10-10 05:00 PM
That was interesting.

I can't keep reading the wikis on Star Trek because of the spoilers.

unrelated

Jake Sisko is a cool kid. He could have been bratty and annoying but they kept him overall level headed. I've watched 2.5 seasons and he hasn't disrespected his dad. You can tell he loves him. I was proud of how him and Nog responded when Sisko and Quark got caught by the Jem Hadar.
508247, Jake is almost perfect but not Wesly Crusher annoying know it all perfect...
Posted by KwesiAkoKennedy, Wed Mar-10-10 05:29 PM
He as doubts and makes mistakes from time to time too.

And he has disobeyed his father on a few occasions. They were just things he Sisko couln't fault him for like teaching Nog to read or saving O'brien when Dukat's security program kicked in. Then there was the matter of the Dabo girl. Pops couldn't be mad at that.

As far as Obrien getting a lot of shine in season 2, it was on some other site I read that they made that move because he was thought to be the most relate-able to viewers. "Obrien MUST SUFFER" was the running gag of the writers for episode where they wanted to suck viewers in emotionally and Obirien being put through the ringer was the method.

I don't mind so much because the character is refreshingly blunt and easy to annoy for a Federation member. Especially where Bashir is concerned.
508253, you're right. that was one almost perfect kid.

Or not wanting to play baseball. He could have been way worse but they always balanced it out. Him tutoring Nog was an awwwww moment or them hanging with the Bajoran girl/leader/negotiator. It was never too sappy. And I never was like, man, Jake again? Next scene.

Then there was the matter of the Dabo girl. Pops
>couldn't be mad at that.

He tried then he just shook his head. haha. Jake had the sprung look down. He probably really was sprung on that girl.

I can see that. His heart should have stopped a few times that season. He was everywhere doin it all.

I like him a lot. Scotty became a caricature but no way can that happen with O'Brien.

On the last ep of the season. Man called Hawk goatee - Check

O'Brien already called him the best captain in star fleet.

Sherry Palmer!

Loved the time travel and mirror universe eps

By far the illest and trillest thing to happen was the Founders ambush of the Kardassians and Romulans. I wasn't ready. Just a nasty twist. And yeah, Garrick was ready to go the distance. And I can't hate him.

Gohead Nog

Kai Winn is the most evil person on the show. Not even close. But I was okay with Vedek Bareil dying.

Kira is no longer annoying and yes, they pushed sexy Kira hard and it kinda worked. They pushed her harder than Dax, interesting.

Major Rawls!!!!!

508932, Great season finale

They made these dudes look unstoppable
509296, Upping the game with the Klingons was great...
Posted by KwesiAkoKennedy, Wed Mar-17-10 01:57 PM
Season 3 had a lot of good moments. One of which is how past that one episode, O'Brien is essentially dead. At least the one we knew from the beginning of the show.

I also like in relation to events like that and how the characters try to work out how it's even possible for things like that to happen, they refuse to take it totally serious. There's a bit of nudge wink that, yeah, it's impossible but fuck it, sci-fi, what are ya gonna do...?

Kira getting likable was never an issue for me. I always understood that she is a woman who's spent half of her life fighting to liberate her people, killing and nearly getting killed in all manner of ways, and when they get free of the Cardassians and some Federation help, cats like Kai Win and anyone with an occupation grudge or power trip starts acting the fool and she's now responsible for it all.

I'd be a might bit testy in her position as well.

Upping the sexy didn't hurt though. Although Mirror Universe Kira was creepy. How self obsessed do you have to be to hit on you own twin from a parallel universe. To be honest I don't think one of the major reason they went this way with her was just to soften the character. She's a slightly better actor than Dax and pulles it off better.

Season 4 gets more DARKNESS as Worf joins the crew and this back and fourth about Root Beer is driven home on a number of occasions...

"It's vile."
"I know. It's so bubbly and cloying and happy."
"Just like the Federation."
"But you know what's really frightening? If you drink enough of it, you start to like it."
"It's insidious."
"Just like the Federation."

Finally Odo taking center stage a lot more is GREAT. His story line during the season really gave him a lot of depth. He was always a great character but as they flesh out the things that make him relate able not just to the viewers but to the other characters rally makes for some good stories and moments. The Dax episode where he was host to Kurzon was made really great by that twist and the performance of the actor. He REALLY sold the change in attitude and emotion he went through.

Tom Riker is a bitch ass bitch. How you gonna be throwing around all that charisma and be all hurt that you a'int got the good life like Will.

Gaul Dukat is characterized not as being evil but as a TREMENDOUSLY pompous yet capable blowhard. He's every bit the opportunist Quark is but he's so in love with the sound of his voice and reputation he can't fathom why any one else wouldn't be as well. Talk all you like Dukat. Kira a'int feeling you. Season 4 will have you feeling sorry for the guy at one point. Then you won't.

511718, Far Beyond The Stars...
Posted by KwesiAkoKennedy, Wed Mar-31-10 12:58 PM
Great, great, sci-fi television right there. Aside from the obvious message, there is quite a bit of depth to the whole episode that touches on creative freedom and the ability to not only be respected as an individual but to, at the very least, have your ideas respected in kind.
511895, I saw he directed that ep. i really love that he left his imprint

512409, it was even better that they revisited this during the s7 premiere

513665, how did you feel about Ezri replacing Jadzia? (spoiler alert)
Posted by Kahlema, Wed Apr-14-10 05:02 PM
it was kind of bs for jadzia to get killed off. and it was so sudden, easy for Gul Dukat. I heard it was due to her not wanting to continuing with the show, I think she tried to ask for more money or something...dumb move on her part, she's like a nobody now.

Ezri was annoying though! So insecure! I guess that was what made her special/unique and so different from Jadzia, but dam. lol

literally there are no scenes on DS9 when its just Quark and Rom and their dealings at home and with the FCA and Grand Nagus.

the ferengi are their funniest and best when they're dealing with other aliens and humanoids, imo.

I know, I know, it's about them dealing with Iggy Pop Vorta but it's all Rom, Quark, Nog, Brunt and that one psychopath Ferengi that only cares about killing instead of profit.

513781, Let's not forget Vic Fontaine and holosuites!

he was a real cool hologram...great singer too. i know this is going to make me a nerd but i bought James Darren's album "This One's From The Heart" because of DS9. Its really good.

I wish they'd hurry up and make holosuites. I know it may not be possible, but they so effin ill. I wonder how the world would be like though, with holosuites. Nobody would ever get married, cause their fantasies can be fabricated. Ppl would stay in holosuites for the rest of their lives. lol
