489361, So... Comcast is officially buying NBC.

Discuss.

I hate Comcast more than almost any other company in existence, so I'm not happy. NBC is also still my favorite network for the chances they take with well-written dramas.
489368, This is very interesting.

I'm currently reading a book about all the mergers and the way they affect the business of movies/TV... so this subject fascinates me at the moment.
489371, What's the nam me of the book?

489461, The Big Picture. The author isn't coming to me at the moment.

They focus on the formation of the studios, and exactly how the studios make money (hint: the box office grosses provides little to no actual dollar gain for the studio). However, there's a lot of talk about how these big conglomerates formed, and how the ties between TV channels and movie studios can be mutually beneficial without ever violating antitrust laws.

Pretty fascinating stuff. I'm only a few chapters in, but I love what I've read so far. The segment on the founder of Sony and Sony's insane impact on the movie/TV world was just awesome.

Internet providers are looking to swallow media providers and vice-versa.

You didn't think they'd let y'all watch TV and Movies online for free forever did you? MP3s were just the opening shot, the TV and Movie industry knew what was coming next and they are fighting the only way they know how: using tons and tons of money
489500, you're a god damned genius for thinking of that

489388, well written dramas? NBC?
Posted by disco dj, Tue Dec-01-09 09:10 PM
you mean like "The Bionic Woman" and "Knight Rider (v 2.0)"?

I like NBC as much as the next guy, but Network Dramas are pretty bad all across the board. It's the comedies ( and Sunday Night Football) that keep me watching NBC...

489403, they have one by my count, Friday Night Lights
Posted by MadDagoNH, Tue Dec-01-09 09:55 PM
Other than that, I watch three comedies on NBC and keep it movin.

489465, Does this mean NBC won't work?
Posted by Whitey, Wed Dec-02-09 10:24 AM
And I'll be on the phone all day scheduling an appointment and then once it's scheduled waiting another whole day for the technician to show up to the house to fix it but they never come and then when I reschedule the appointment they come 4 hours late completey unprepared to fix the problem so they just leave?

Fuck Comcast

One time the Comcast guy came to my house and got stung by yellowjackets. He was highly allergic and I was worried he'd die before he got to the drug store to get whatever people that are allergic to stings need to not die. Anything to get out of work, with those guys!

I really thought you were about to say you were worried that he'd die before he had a chance to fix your cable! that would have been classic.
489554, He made me feel pretty bad

Like by having an active yellow jacket nest on my property, I wasn't a man that took care of my own shit. I felt even worse when he went up on the ladder and took those yellow jackets out with special Comcast bug spray, like this dude is getting the shit stung out of him on the regular.
489471, Makes since for comcast...just in "content" alone.

maybe EXCLUSIVE vod content?
489657, better believe it...

broadcast tv as a business model is changing and more of these older conglomerates will have to change their model in order to survive. A network's primary asset is it's programming and content. Content drives advertising $$$. Advertising $$$ drives operations. Comcast more than likely will find away to "cableize" NBC, meaning multi-platform programming and content agreements and increased online presence over multiple platforms.
489654, It will be interesting to see how 30 Rock reacts to this.

489656, damn came here to post this, and I HATE comcast as well.....

Could only be a huge win for the city right?
489709, ^^^gets it

I am hoping that this could mean media jobs moving from LA (where comcast media propeties are) to the east coast.

I think its good for NBC because I never saw how GE added value to NBC. The new company will be an actually pure media company JV owned by COmcast and NBC. Hopefully it will operate indepedently.
