if it wasn't for harrison ford.. and his character.. those movies would be total and complete trash...

I don't care for the series anymore either. The prequels even made me realize the glaring flaws of the original trilogy...

But you have to admit it was groundbreaking for it's time. And not because of Han Solo being a bad ass.

these films had more value because they were so elementary.. especially in the plot, i really these are films made just for kids, shrug.. and now that i am older.. i can't sit through this drivel.. there are some classic scenes sure but the reactions to profound events are so.. flat.. and unrealistic.. and that's what bugs me the most.. its only a scifi classic because of special effects for its time imo... not really the plot/acting.. three are fun parts of the movie don't get me wrong... but overall.. meh.

Lucas set out to make an updated version of the old "Saturday Morning Serials" ( i.e. "Flash Gordon" etc) in a big screen format.

The acting wasn't really the focal point. It was basically "good guys fight the bad guys in outer space". With a little romance, some vivid storytelling and a whole lot of special effects. Which is WHY ( aside from Alec Guiness and Harrison Ford) most of the actors were unknowns. The dialogue was campy, because that genre of movies ( and in the 40's radio) was campy. This was a vehicle for the imagination. Nothing more, nothing less.

He wasn't neccessarily trying to make a "good" movie. He was trying to make a FUN movie. ( Which is part of the reason "Star Wars" is seen as one of the first Blockbusters).


I don't agree that it was a kids movie though.

The reasons the prequels are perceived as awful as they are is that they take themselves way too seriously, and the that's reflected in the fact that it lacks a cynical Han Solo type character. Like, I like those flicks, flaws and all.... but with out that character, the shit is way too sanctimonious. So, I don't think you're wrong in saying that without him, they'd be garbage... but that's like saying "If we would've scored more points than the other team, we would've won." He was in that bitch. And yes, he's the best part of that bitch. But you can't say "well, if it weren't for two parts hydrogen, you wouldn't know what the fuck a water is." No shit!

Stripped down you're like "If it wasn't for the enjoyable part of the movie, I wouldn't enjoy it."

where there are no Hydrogen atoms and Harrison Ford isn't in Star Wars, they still aren't bad films. Alec Guinness, Cool special effects (for the time), good music, and a great bad guy make (especially 1 and 2 - or should I say 4 and 5) above average films in themselves.

and things were a lot different in the galaxy by the time Han was around.

Maybe I'm trying to convince myself why the acting was so stiff in the prequels, but it makes sense the society was different then, and there weren't really any characters like that on Naboo or coruscant.

When you think about it, there probobly was a dozen people just like Han in the cantina in E4 because everybody was out for self, their story just wasnt told.

though i'm sure lucas didn't mean it that way, that's a great way of looking at it.
