471547, Can we talk about Diablo Cody for a minute?
Posted by spades, Mon Aug-24-09 12:20 PM
I'm speaking specifically of her work that's made it to the screen.

What do we think so far?

Juno
US of Tara
and now Jennifer's Body

I thought Juno was sweet, overhyped, and saved mostly by the fact that Michael Cera was in it - it had the 'new kinda comedy' vibe.

I haven't seen US of Tara - but y'all seem to like it.

What do you think of this new movie? I'm sure you've seen the trailers/teasers by now.

Help me digest this writer...
471553, I agree with you on Juno, couldn't get into US of Tara, and don't really

have an interest in Jennifer's Body because, well, I'm not a fan of Megan Fox...

I read her columns in Entertainment Weekly, and it seems as if she's cut from the pop-culture-as-art school of writing/filmmaking, which is fine...

I also found it interesting when she fired back at her critics a couple of years ago...

471555, where can I read her column, and do you have said 'firing back'

I'd like to see that too.

Now see from the trailers - Jennifer's body looks like the kinda movie I'd like. Acerbic, dark humor, w/a little horror/gore.

If she does it right, I'd LOVE it.

My issue is it's a REALLY hard thing to do and I haven't seen anything from her to make me think she can pull off the balancing act.

471561, I like her, but hate her writing.

.
471563, huh?
Posted by spades, Mon Aug-24-09 12:40 PM
Do you know her personally or something?
471635, I'm talking interviews, the EW stuff, etc...
Posted by CaptNish, Mon Aug-24-09 03:13 PM
But I do have some mutual friends as well.

Her writing just seems forced. I think she does great with concepts, but her dialogue is painful to me.
471588, Seems to me she watched too many eps of Gilmore Girls between lapdances

471610, Yeah, JB seems to be MY kind of horror flick, BUT
Posted by spades, Mon Aug-24-09 02:07 PM
I really don't think she can pull it off.
471616, she isn't doing typical crap
Posted by lfresh, Mon Aug-24-09 02:13 PM
i can appreciate that

471842, Yeah, but it seems VERY self-conscious.

She's TRYING to be different and I think it shows.
471881, as opposed to the folks who don't try?

471970, Some people are just different.

I feel like she's TRYING to be quirky as opposed to being quirky, and it shows in her writing. It seems canned.

471687, I think US of Tara is hell overrated...as was Juno....

471705, Amanda Seyfried is the real deal, she's 1 of the good ones LoL.

Megan Fox will probably suck throughout on the acting tip BUT if she dies a horrible bloody death (in the movie of course), alls forgiven.

To tie into the topic, Diablo Cody is ok. I can see how her writing can be off putting tho.
471723, Juno was a quality teen movie in an era of absolute nonsense
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Aug-24-09 07:57 PM
Granted, I thought Saved! was a better version of Juno but it was a solid movie. It got massively overhyped and the backlash came but it's a good teen flick.

United States of Tara was boring and aimless. I think Jennifer's Body is more in her wheelhouse and she should stick with popcorn movies and stay away from TV. She might have a solid drama in her but I don't think it's time to go for it right now. She should get a few more features under her belt.
471843, OMG did I love saved! I really don't get why it didn't do better.
Posted by spades, Tue Aug-25-09 10:06 AM
AND I really thought it was gonna be a comeback for MacCaulay - I was ALL off.

lol
472005, lack of marketing was in no small part due to
Posted by Wordman, Tue Aug-25-09 05:40 PM
the ridiculousness of Christian right in the movie. That pulled a lot of possible dollars.
That being said, it's the kind of flick that dies in the theatre and lives on DVD.
