464811, Where did Orlando Bloom go wrong?
Posted by agentB, Mon Jul-27-09 10:30 AM
He had major roles in 2 of the biggest franchises in motion picture history. He was the hottest man in Hollywood at one point. You would think he'd be money at the bank like Steve Gutenberg in the 80s. He should at least be getting steady work on a Gerard Butler or Ewan McGregor level.
464813, Dude has several projects coming up...
Posted by xbenzive, Mon Jul-27-09 10:32 AM
so we'll see him on the big screen again.
464814, If his career stalls, people will point at Elizabethtown
Posted by stylez dainty, Mon Jul-27-09 10:36 AM
Which probably isn't fair, since there's a lot of things wrong with that movie besides his performance, but he didn't help matters.

It was him stepping out his lane and trying something different as a leading man and falling on his face.
464856, Agreed
Posted by zuma1986, Mon Jul-27-09 12:37 PM
I mean that film was suppose to blow up for him and get Dunst to that Natelie Portman level. Instead nobody saw it and most ppl probably won't remember it, but to be fair the film most movies around that time nobody saw.
465018, I don't have a problem with Elizabethtown at all...
Posted by Midtown Records, Tue Jul-28-09 01:26 AM
Infact, I liked it so much that I bought it on DVD.
465019, And not to take this thread in an entirely different direction but...
Posted by Midtown Records, Tue Jul-28-09 01:27 AM
I'd love to hear why people didn't like it.
465023, As a HUGE Cameron Crowe fan, I had two big problems with it:
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Jul-28-09 01:40 AM
1. It played more as a series of scenes rather than a cohesive film. It was like Crowe recognized all of the "moments" and played them just like that-- like moments, not as a narrative.

2. Bloom simply doesn't have the charisma or the ability to draw the audience in with his emotion (or even the insinuation of deeper emotion) in order to make the film work. It's a role Tom Cruise could have KILLED in the Jerry Maguire era. It needed some starpower charm. Dunst did her best, but I wasn't sold on her as the ideal free spirit love interest either... she was better than Bloom though.
465026, I agree with those problems, but I still like the film....
Posted by CaptNish, Tue Jul-28-09 02:26 AM
Definitely not his strongest piece, but I think it's still very enjoyable.
465028, that's how i feel about vanilla sky
Posted by Mynoriti, Tue Jul-28-09 02:46 AM
i agree with critiques of it but i love it. it's where crowe started slipping though
465027, Yup, it was Cameron Crowe watching too much Cameron Crowe
Posted by Mynoriti, Tue Jul-28-09 02:36 AM
i mean, how many Cameron Crowey moments can you cram into one fucking movie?

they even turned shopping for an urn into a music video

i'm a pretty big fan too but i literally had to avoid going near his movies for over a year after watching Elizabethtown.

horrible movie

464816, he went wrong by trying to act

464930, he's just not that good
Posted by colonelk, Mon Jul-27-09 04:07 PM
I mean, Jeff Goldblum was in Jurassic Park and Independence Day.

Bloom's mix of pretty, boyish looks with mediocre ability means he'll never crack the A-list.

465005, I was just thinking about this recently. The answer I came up with is
Posted by icecold21, Mon Jul-27-09 11:45 PM
Holy Man. He didn't get a better offer than that?

>I mean, Jeff Goldblum was in Jurassic Park and Independence
>Day.

As for Bloom, I just think he got typecast by playing too many roles that weren't set in the present time. He's just not versatile enough. He needs a good movie that's set in the present that suits his skills. He needs to pick the right roles. The potential is there, its just that he can't play just any role.
464945, He fell off and now James McAvoy takes all of his roles
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Jul-27-09 05:30 PM
465010, He didn't.
