I was about to get heated at you for excluding Old Yeller.

And I don't know if a movie was ever made of it, but if they had done it right, Where The Red Fern grows would be my instant number one. That shit made me cry like a bitch when I was in 3rd grade and shit.

Puberty was in full effect, so it was that grade where we were all pretty much kids trying to be tough...choking back tears.
464114, Sam in I Am Legend was kinda sad.
Posted by cskncream, Thu Jul-23-09 10:44 AM
May not be list worthy, but I felt bad for Will in that scene.

464130, Horse.

I saw that recently and thought that scene didn't hit as hard, mostly because it seemed to happen in the first 15 minutes. I'm not even sure if we knew the horse's name before that scene. For some reason, in my memory they had been through a lot together on screen before that happened.

Still sad, though.

And damn, I just remembered the chimp from Project X. For some reason, I saw that movie multiple times in middle school during class. Maybe it was based off of a book or something. Anyway, that would be on my list, too.
464264, Wait, is that when the horse sank into quicksand??
Posted by MANHOODLUM, Thu Jul-23-09 09:15 PM
I didn't remember that scene until it was mentioned, but it kinda flashed in my head.
464265, The silverback from 'Instict' is an underrated top 20'r
Posted by MANHOODLUM, Thu Jul-23-09 09:18 PM
When it came to your boys rescue and they killed it right in front of him.
464383, YOOOOOO!!!! I'm having a serious moment over here!!!!
Posted by Wordman, Fri Jul-24-09 11:47 AM
That's right, the horse and the quicksand!
It's been so long since I saw the movie, I thought it was the flying dog.
Remembering that scene, that seriously put a downer on the whole day.

464858, Pretty much.
Posted by zuma1986, Mon Jul-27-09 12:42 PM
I mean this film, old yeller and the lion king are pretty much the 3 deaths in films that most ppl remember sticking out from their childhood. I don't know too many ppl that bring up Hooch or Virgil The Chimp, in reference to their childhood or otherwise.
464135, Cmon. Gorillas in the Midst mo sadder

464169, spoiler alert - Number One Saddest Animal Death
Posted by janey, Thu Jul-23-09 12:52 PM
Seraphine - Alone Across Australia

I can still tear up thinking about it, and I saw this movie 6 years ago.

Partly because it was a documentary, so this was a real animal death, not the story of an animal death
Partly because it was completely unexpected
Probably largely because I was mad at him for bringing the dog along in the first place -- I don't think it was appropriate for a terrier to be walking across a continent. Sure, if you as a human are crazy enough, fine. But don't subject your dog to it. And look who survived, right?
