456377, What is the Most Irresponsible Movie?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Jun-10-09 08:59 AM
By Irresponsible Movie, I mean a movie that sends a messages so wrong and irresponsible that viewers would find themselves in Deep Doo Doo if they followed the message.

Like John Singleton's Baby Boy in which Tyrese killed Snoop Dog's character and still manage to live happily ever after.

I think the worse of all time though would have to be Pretty Woman which conveyed the message that a life of prostitution can lead to a fairy tale romance with a multi-millionaire.

I know most movies aren't necessary intending to convey a message, but a lot of the times they do whether they mean it or not.

Got any other examples?

Posted by BigWorm, Wed Jun-10-09 04:09 PM
I love this movie, by the way.

But it's about a drunk, drug-addicted mall Santa that sodomizes fat women in department store dressing rooms, cusses all the time and steals basically whatever he can get away with.

At the end of the movie, he steals a toy for a little kid, and teaches the kid how to beat up other kids and give them the finger.

Oh, and the cops that catch the Santa shoot him--unarmed--several times in the back.

The movie apologizes for none of these things.

I thought I might be able to just watch it and laugh at how blatantly wrong it is.

I didn't laugh once. It was just terrible. Even with that bullshit disclaimer at the beginning, there's no way to watch that movie without thinking that whoever made it really, really hated black folks.

456608, Between Birth Of A Nation and Hitler's propaganda films
Posted by Wordman, Thu Jun-11-09 12:13 PM
It's really hard to find anything more reprehensible. With most other movies, the "I can't believe they'd..." factor is arguable, or at least excusable on some level (QT's use of certain words, hookers with a heart of gold, etc). But Birth and Hitler's propaganda stuff, that stuff is DEADLY - it takes on a whole new level.
You know how serious it is? D.W. Griffith and Emil Yannings completely ruined not just their career but their legacy by going down that route.

I mean they helped cause the famine (BY flooding the market with cheaper grains and therefore putting the local farmers out of work), invaded the country, killed many civilians and yet they're the victims?

I probably should have expanded more in my first response but I figured it was universally seen as a j/k of a film.
456845, That movie was made before 9/11 How could it be propaganda?
Posted by icecold21, Fri Jun-12-09 12:44 PM
I don't see how that movie was irresponsible.
456959, It can still be propaganda for the Army when not at war
Posted by zuma1986, Fri Jun-12-09 10:16 PM
I mean I consider a film like Top Gun propganda for the Air Force and they weren't at real war at the time (Cold War was the closest thing to one).

I mean between ppl's attitude towards Muslims and the Rah Rah Rah patriot American sentiment after Sept 11 this film could be seen as very irresponsible. The film The Siege the same thing, was before Sept 11 but still feel it's extremely irresponsible film b/c of what happened during Sept 11.

it showed what depths a man has to go in a time of war -- accepting the lunacy and disregarding conscience so you can make the most efficient decisions possible (ie cutting off arms of the inoculated).

Kurtz had reached that depth. Willard's trip showed how he got there.

however, I don't think it was necessarily pro-US in regards to Vietnam. it was just the perfect vehicle of fucked up war that Americans can relate to.

I love drug films but something about this one disturbed me about how much it promoted excess. I remember reading quotes of Terry Gilliam defending the film and saying that it's extremely unlikely that anyone would want to anything like the film. Yet almost every person who liked the film wants just that.

Posted by zuma1986, Sun Jun-14-09 10:24 PM
I don't personally agree with this film being irresponsible b/c I think this film did a lot better job than Scarface, Godfather and defiantly Goodfellas of showing the downside of drugs (By showing Pookie going through rehab and Gee Money's story), and tried to make all of the violent scenes more shocking than just guys with cool guns (The Wedding scene alone did that). I think it's hard to make a film about the rise and fall of a drug dealer without glamorizing a little bit but Mario Van Peebles seemed to very much try to not do that, while at the same time not make a bs "just Say no"-type film (That speech that Nino has at the end is brilliant)

just b/c they don't make the drugs but they get almost all the blame and pretty much they only ones who get charged with anything. It's just stupid to me to put the blame on the end result when the run-up consists of a lot of more powerful ppl (both politically and socially) who should be held more accountable.

Because they're the ones who get caught. How does the old saying go?
"It's only a crime if you get caught." The higher-ups don't get their hands dirty so they never get caught.

It's just stupid to me to put the blame on the end
>result when the run-up consists of a lot of more powerful ppl

that's why they're NOT accountable. They have the power and resources to NOT be.

They have the resources to not be held accountable in the courts but they don't for the general public, yet even though are eyes were opened during the Iran-Contra Scandal and other similar events most still choose to be blind.

now granted, he did go over there and hang out with them and learn a bit of the Samurai code, but I don't think he became a 'better' Samurai.

Nothing against you but a LOT of people who shit on the movie didn't see it, but based their disdain for it on the fact they thought Cruise was The Last Samurai, when it was actually referring to Katsumoto ( and his men).

Tom Cruise's character was already an accomplished swordsman and soldier in general. For him to become skilled with the Katana would not be so farfetched as the US army at the time carried a cutlass or saber. Both are edge slicing swords.
