453264, Awesome horrible movies
Posted by Tek4mula, Sun May-24-09 01:02 AM
I just finished watching A Life Less Ordinary for the fifth time and I found it just as awesome as the first time despite the 1 star rating the guide gave it. I can understand why it got such a poor rating but I still love it, not very cohesive film but I found it entertaining. I'm not even sure I can explain why I like it so much but I can definitely say I enjoy it, even on repeated viewings.

It got me thinking, there are a lot of critics here... What are some movies that are generally considered bad that for one reason or another you think are great?

If I had to pick a top three of bad movies that I love:

1. Fifth Element
2. A Life Less Ordinary
3. Starship Troopers
453266, I liked Starship Troopers

Once I realized what kind of movie it was supposed to be.

I can tell you about A Life Less Ordinary, though.

I believe it was Danny Boyle's follow-up to Trainspotting. And starring Ewan McGregor no doubt.

Personally I hated it. I thought it was a hot mess. But that was mostly because I had set the bar so high due to Trainspotting and Shallow Grave. And for his next movie to be ...that...

I am NOT a fan of Delroy Lindo, but taken on it's own, it might have made for a decent movie.

But by context it disappointed so many people. I'm only surprised that Danny Boyle was able to not only bounce back. I thought A Life Less Ordinary was going to ruin his career. But then he went on to make films that were far more successful than Trainspotting.
453267, I love Fifth Element and Starship Troopers

The movie has one of the worst plots and characters, but it's fun to watch John Malkovich being a badass. Anyways, the opening 10 minutes isn't believable. Dude is from the Army defending himself, I don't care if the other 2 guys left, the wife should of known who they were.
453348, Hudson Hawk

pound for pound one of the worst movies ever, but I love it. Got it on DVD even.

James Coburn is awesome in those sorts of movies.

453609, those are good movies tho.
Posted by will_5198, Tue May-26-09 06:40 PM
I dunno, I was taking this post as movies that are admittedly bad, but so much so they become enjoyable. Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore are just well-done comedies that are funny -- they just didn't cater to 40-plus film critics.
453654, I defined it as something
Posted by thoughtprocess, Wed May-27-09 08:06 AM
that wasn't even trying to hold together as a film, and wasn't just entertaining in spite of that, but because of it. that's kinda why i picked billy madison over happy gilmore. i thought happy gilmore had a little bit of a sappy story to it, whereas billy madison technically had a "plot" but then loosely tied it together at the end just so they could show chris farley make out with a gigantic penguin.
453388, There's already an OKP name for these movies:

I'm not sure my 10 year old mind was able to appreciate just how shitty that movie was back then. I recently got back in touch with my friend whose choice it was to see it & we were just discussing how bad this movie was. We figured we had to be the only people that ever even saw it.

Highlander is his crowning achievement, followed by Greystroke (Tarzan).

He was in one straight to video masterpiece, where him and his wife were sent to prison becuz she was pregnant. It was a futuristic prison and the movie was low budget, so u already know how high the cheez factor was.

He was also in a Se7en knock-off, where he was tortured by the memory of his dead son; son died in a tricycle accident and I'm not even jokin'.
