450960, Abram's pet themes. *Star Trek Spoilers*
Posted by spades, Mon May-11-09 11:00 AM
Ok, I may give some shit about Star Trek away so if you haven't seen it, get outta htis post, quick/fast!

Now, that being said, JJ keeps coming back to these themes of Parallel universes/time travel

Fringe: Two warring Universes fighting for supremacy
Lost: Time travel, habitants debating whether or not they are still in 'their' universe
Star Trek: Time travel & Parallell Universes.

How many time can he tap this before we start to get bored? What do y'all think of this?
450962, Well with Sci-Fi and Star Trek it makes sense as
Posted by calij81, Mon May-11-09 11:22 AM
theses themes and use of story telling have been used time-and-time again throughout Star Trek.

At least it was better used this time as opposed to Star Trek 4 - The Voyage Home when flying around the sun really really fast is a way to travel back in time.
450963, Yeah, star Trek 4 was like Superman 3
Posted by spades, Mon May-11-09 11:32 AM
Just a waste. Still, tho it funny to see him playing w/this same theme in 3 different venues, so close to eachother. Lost and Fringe are still on the air.
450968, Also with the new Star Trek I like how he used time travel
Posted by calij81, Mon May-11-09 11:41 AM
as a means to reboot the whole series, yet still make the original series still relevant.

It also gives the new seies a little wiggle room and not being confined to events in the ST:TOS, TNG, and all the movies.
450971, Oh it was genius, I'm very pleased by how he did this.
Posted by spades, Mon May-11-09 11:54 AM
My hats off to him, but see it kinda takes something away from it, cuz this is the 3rd time he's gone back to this. I kinda feel like he only has 1 trick up his sleeve.
450966, It's kinda lazy story telling imo
Posted by Nopayne, Mon May-11-09 11:40 AM
But it served it's purpose for this one Star Trek movie. They should never bring it up again.
450970, I agree, it worked well with this movie and rebooting the series
Posted by calij81, Mon May-11-09 11:42 AM
but they shouldn't use it again.
451180, especially since it's the 3rd time it's been used in star trek movies

450989, what about Alias and Felicity?
Posted by BrillRick, Mon May-11-09 01:12 PM
I could see Alias in your train of thought, that's kind of a sci-fi show, but not felicity.

450990, Did he do Felicity?
Posted by spades, Mon May-11-09 01:15 PM
Now I'm not saying he does it everytime. cloverfield seemed to be something quite different alltogether, but he goes back to it often enough to have me looking at him sideways.
450991, Yeah he did Felicity
Posted by BrillRick, Mon May-11-09 01:26 PM
the story i've heard is that he was running out of story ideas for Felicity and he though if Felicity was a secret agent that he would more interesting stories to tell. And that was the start of Alias.
450993, Except Abrams only produced Cloverfield.
Posted by ZooTown74, Mon May-11-09 01:29 PM
Matt Reeves directed, and Drew Goddard wrote it.

Let's listen
451004, Ok, well as Cloverfield wasn't really part of the pattern anyway
Posted by spades, Mon May-11-09 02:31 PM
that doesn't really upset much.
451005, There wasn't any in MI3 either.
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon May-11-09 02:35 PM
But you're right, his most recent work seems to be WAY to relient on time travel.
451010, MI3 wasn't really his baby tho.
Posted by spades, Mon May-11-09 03:17 PM
That was an established vehicle.
451178, And Star Trek wasn't an established vehicle?
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue May-12-09 12:38 PM
...
451184, Was MI:3 a reboot?
Posted by spades, Tue May-12-09 12:55 PM
No, the 2 aren't comparable?
451293, Delete
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue May-12-09 08:49 PM
My train of thought was off on that one.
451017, But does he tap his "kill the nigga" theme?
Posted by soulgyal, Mon May-11-09 03:33 PM
451144, No negroes killed in Star Trek or Fringe yet.
Posted by spades, Tue May-12-09 09:46 AM
so i'm guessing that an issues specific to Lost. Maybe it's Damon and Cuse's thing.
451188, what was the captain of kirk's father's ship?

or maybe someone on the internet could point out these little things with Tarantino and bring them to light. I don't think anyone has ever really discussed QT's undertones, and people should really be made aware of them.
451191, There's a Hollywood Conspiracy Theory....
Posted by imcvspl, Tue May-12-09 01:22 PM
Basically back in late 2000 early 2001 there was a writers strike in Hollywood, during which the gov't was able to get a number of mole's in the industry. The goal being theorized to sway public opinion on certain ideas. Notably the show Alias was one of five that debuted in the fall of 2001 with plots related to intelligence agencies, a season which started right after 9/11. There was no prior rationale to think such shows would be desired but in the aftermath of 9/11 the audience was primed for such dramas.

Notably the early Alias episodes delt with a lot of taboo subjects around things conspiracists had theorized with about for years. Presented in ways which were quite matter of fact and or tongue in cheek. The theory says these were created to introduce these complex concepts into public consciousness so that the weight of what was really behind them would be offset.

If you take that and apply it to what you're trying to say here, the time travel meme is something which we are being conditioned to accept. There are notable scientific areas around this area. Could it be conditioning for....

For the record though, I'm not necessarily a proponent of said theory, but recalled it upon reading your thread,

451273, So, are we just going to ignore the ACTUAL recurring theme of
Posted by ZooTown74, Tue May-12-09 07:41 PM
dysfunctional family in JJ's work, or are we all going to continue to bitch and whine about "time travel plots?"

time.com:

>Q: Your shows are less about mysterious islands and mad scientists than they are about dysfunctional families. Why? Martin Petersen SCHLESWIG, GERMANY

A: Especially in television, the more that you're telling a story about a family, the better the show ends up being. And the family can be a family, a group of friends or the members of a starship. You're telling the story of relationships and how characters grow.

And that almost makes him smart
Let's listen
451280, Well when the time travel plots diminish the family aspect...
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue May-12-09 08:04 PM
then yeah, you should probably talk about it.

The main reason Spock and Kirk were friends was basically because Old Spock told Kirk they'd be friends.
451284, Uh huh.
Posted by ZooTown74, Tue May-12-09 08:19 PM
I also like the way you ignored the word "dysfunctional," bringing up the Spock/Spock plot point as an example of how far-fetched the idea is.

Let's listen
451291, Every non-procedural show is about "dysfunctional families"
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue May-12-09 08:47 PM
The Wire, Oz, The West Wing, The Shield, you name it, it's a dysfunctional family. That's a basic element of dramatic TV, not a theme that is specific to JJ Abrams' work.
451296, what dysfunctional family muthafucka?
Posted by Rjcc, Tue May-12-09 08:59 PM
kirk has no family

spocks dad has 6 fucking lines

GTFOH niggas is lying like shit about this movie right now

451304, The crew is the family
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue May-12-09 09:48 PM
Just like in The Wire, the police is a family as is the gang as is the school system.
451306, wtf?
Posted by Rjcc, Tue May-12-09 10:08 PM
half the crew never speaks to each other. you need a full season of hour long tv shows to pull that off not a 2 hour movie

451307, That's why he said especially in television.
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue May-12-09 10:15 PM
"Especially in television, the more that you're telling a story about a family, the better the show ends up being. And the family can be a family, a group of friends or the members of a starship. You're telling the story of relationships and how characters grow."

One could argue that Star Trek was about the family coming together and everyone finding their roles within the family unit. Granted, it still has nothing to do with the topic of JJ Abrams' pet themes but that's the argument that would be made.
451320, "or the members of a starship."
Posted by ZooTown74, Wed May-13-09 12:01 AM
I guess he was referring to Alias? Fringe? They both had/have starships, right?

Yeah.

Posted by spades, Wed May-13-09 10:22 AM
You've come up w/an alternate thought, let's discuss.

I can clearly see the dysfunctional fam thing in Lost, it's PAINTED on in Fringe - MI:3 had it, but I think that was established before JJ,

and I guess it was there in Cloverfield too.

Capt. Pike was OBVIOUSLY the father figure, I guess that makes Kirk and Spock brothers, altough Spock was AT LEAST at the level of Pike in the Hierachy from what I could tell (at least before he stepped on the ship)

McCoy's the cool uncle?

I'm running out of gas here - somebody help me out.
451381, No, let's not talk about it anymore, forget I even brought it up
