441636, All Time Best War Movies
Posted by BarTek, Wed Mar-18-09 05:41 PM
I will nominate Full Metal Jacket
441644, Imo, Full Metal Jacket >>> Platoon
Posted by BarTek, Wed Mar-18-09 06:40 PM
.
441648, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan. in that order.
Posted by disco dj, Wed Mar-18-09 07:26 PM
followed by Apocalypse Now and Patton.

441649, Platoon was good.. but not as gripping as Full Metal Jacket..imo
Posted by BarTek, Wed Mar-18-09 07:32 PM
...
441671, I loved the first half of Full Metal Jacket
Posted by zuma1986, Wed Mar-18-09 09:12 PM
but the second half was pretty average. Not only did it not have much tension but really didn't have that many great war scenes. Platoon seemed like it was from somebody who actually been in Vietnam.
441673, it was.
Posted by disco dj, Wed Mar-18-09 09:20 PM
>. Platoon seemed like it was from somebody who actually
>been in Vietnam.

Oliver Stone.

He's a Vietnam Veteran. He made a trilogy about the Vietnam War:

"Platoon", "Heaven and Earth" and "Born on the Fourth of July"

441681, Yeah I know
Posted by zuma1986, Wed Mar-18-09 09:36 PM
and that's why I love Platoon. i feel like I'm watching something made by somebody trying to tell their experiences. when I watch Full Metal Jacket or Causalities of War, although good films they lack the incite and sincerity that oliver stone was able to get across. Apocalypse Now is in a different category just b/c it's more metaphorical and unless u count the redux it really doesn't get that into commentary of the war it's depicting it's more war in general.
441708, Interesting...
Posted by BarTek, Wed Mar-18-09 10:40 PM
Well, I think that both of them are excellent movies.. I guess I just had a problem with Charlie Sheen's psychological progression and his depiction of the character, it felt inconsistent, it seemed like he slipped into the madness a bit too quickly than i would have imagined but maybe that's how war is...
441735, *Martin Sheen
Posted by Backbone, Thu Mar-19-09 05:13 AM
441873, Charlie Sheen, wise guy..
Posted by BarTek, Thu Mar-19-09 03:57 PM

442525, Have you seen The Big Red One (original and Reconstruction)?

Posted by will_5198, Wed Mar-18-09 09:42 PM
441709, I am going to watch that again...
Posted by BarTek, Wed Mar-18-09 10:41 PM
It's been too long..
441718, my favorite film of all-time.
Posted by dula dibiasi, Thu Mar-19-09 12:08 AM
it's absolutely perfect.
441731, I'm near the ending..
Posted by BarTek, Thu Mar-19-09 03:44 AM
This movie is.. just.. wow.... WOW....
441867, what's your thoughts on Redux?
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Thu Mar-19-09 02:59 PM

441874, I haven't seen that at all.. how does it differ?
Posted by BarTek, Thu Mar-19-09 03:58 PM
?
441877, it adds like 30-40 minutes I think
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Thu Mar-19-09 04:09 PM
the most memorable part is they stop at a French plantation and the plantation owner talks about how the Vietnamese fought against the French in the 50's & it kinda draws parallels to the war with America.
don't remember much about the other differences, but that one stood out.
441879, I like the original better
Posted by will_5198, Thu Mar-19-09 04:15 PM
French scenes are interesting but seem to interrupt the movie some (for me). didn't care for the Playboy helicopter scene that was added.

best additions were Kilgore's radio calls for his board and Brando with the Time magazines.
441883, The story/plot of this movie is just incredible imo...
Posted by BarTek, Thu Mar-19-09 04:25 PM
There are so many fantastic quotable's... the sheer lunacy of some of the characters... I mean, I can't remember the last time I saw a movie with as much depth and artistic merit... a crazy man's journey to kill another crazy man... just brilliant..
442472, *gasps*
Posted by jigga, Mon Mar-23-09 04:30 PM
didn't care for the Playboy helicopter scene
>that was added.

that's one of my favorite scenes
441923, RE: Apocolypse Now
Posted by Sponge, Thu Mar-19-09 07:09 PM
The opening sequence is still amazing each time I see it. And I'm ashamed that I didn't think of Duvall's Kilgore for this post:

paths of glory is the best imo
441751, Ive been meaning to peep this.
Posted by KnowOne, Thu Mar-19-09 07:49 AM
Hear a lot of good things about it.
441886, The ending is what really sells it for me....
Posted by rorschach, Thu Mar-19-09 04:34 PM
And the war scenes in the trenches were probably the first to look so realistic.

441680, I agree about SPR, Platoon, and FMJ... i'd also like to submit
Posted by Jay Doz, Wed Mar-18-09 09:35 PM
Letters from Iwo Jima and Black Hawk Down.
441686, had I not read the book, I would've liked "Black Hawk Down" more.
Posted by disco dj, Wed Mar-18-09 09:39 PM
not saying it's a bad movie ( I own it and watch it a lot), But there's a LOT of sensationalism in the movie that didn't take place in the book...(thank you, Jerry Bruckheimer...)

441697, lmao, i actually enjoyed the movie more after having had read the book
Posted by Jay Doz, Wed Mar-18-09 10:09 PM
441755, I jsut wonder about some of the name changes
Posted by MadDagoNH, Thu Mar-19-09 08:08 AM
I guess I can see it with some of the Delta guys since that's more of a secret force and all that, but why the hell was Stebbins changed to Grimes? I never fucking understood that.

441757, well damn

Apparently it's because in real life, Stebbins is a rapist.

Damn.

441864, that's EXACTLY why they changed it...but it wasn't just Rape:

>Apparently it's because in real life, Stebbins is a rapist.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Stebbins

John Stebbins (born 1965) was an American soldier who fought in the Battle of Mogadishu. Though serving as a clerk for the Army Rangers during the Somalia conflict, he joined the fighting and was awarded the Silver Star for his actions. He was mentioned in the book Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War.

In 2000, he was convicted by court-martial of the molestation and rape of his six-year-old daughter and was imprisoned in Fort Leavenworth for 30 years.

He did not feature in the subsequent film version of the book, instead being replaced with a character named John Grimes played by Ewan MacGregor.

Stebbins is currently serving time at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Elkton, Ohio, a low security facility housing male offenders. It has an adjacent satellite that houses low and minimum security male offenders.

442520, Holy shit
Posted by BennyTenStack, Mon Mar-23-09 08:09 PM
I always wondered why they changed his name too. That is just sick.
441707, My faves (although I'd have Band of Brothers as #1 if it was eligible)
Posted by SoulHonky, Wed Mar-18-09 10:33 PM
I haven't seen a lot of the old classics.

1. A Thin Red Line
2. The Dirty Dozen
3. Saving Private Ryan
4. Das Boot
5. Glory
6. Apocalypse Now
7. Platoon
8. Three Kings
9. Full Metal Jacket
10. MASH

And honorable mention to Force 10 From Navarone, which a lot of people don't like but I love. One of my favorite endings of all time.
441723, I like that list, I would prolly replace one w/The Great Escape tho'
Posted by Grand_Royal, Thu Mar-19-09 12:30 AM

catch a swollen heart, from not rollin' smart
441834, Das Boot is so great
Posted by Mynoriti, Thu Mar-19-09 01:45 PM
i need to revisit that one soon

Thin Red Line bores the piss out of me. I understand what it was trying to do. It was just done way too much.

and agreed on BoB.
441921, The Thin Line Between Foliage and Carnage
Posted by Sponge, Thu Mar-19-09 06:51 PM
is the only Malick that I come close to loving.

The combat sequence was dope. In the most recent Film Quarterly issue (2 or 3 articles on The Wire, 1 on Generation Kill, interview) David Simon was asked if there were any war films he thought were exceptional and he noted TRL because of its depiction of hierarchy or something like that. I know he liked TRL in some fashion. LOL.
445546, is that the significange of the title?
Posted by kayru99, Fri Apr-10-09 09:15 AM
i looove that flick, btw
441915, Totally forgot about Three Kings
Posted by zuma1986, Thu Mar-19-09 06:26 PM
That's such a great film, I wish Ice Cube would stick to these type of films and not whatever disney films he has coming up.
446233, was going to come in and mention Band of Brothers,
Posted by kajsidog, Tue Apr-14-09 05:10 PM
