441426, Did anyone watch Kings on Sunday?
Posted by McDeezNuts, Tue Mar-17-09 01:40 PM
It was pretty cool. I hope they don't go too far with the Biblical allusions and shit, because that will turn me off. The stuff with the reverend could be interesting but I hope it's not overdone. The butterflies stuff is already cheesy as hell to me (is it supposed to be?).

I do like the political stuff though (war is all about the money - corporations profiteering). It's also interesting trying to figure out the where/when/how of this alternate world.

Al Swearengen's (AKA Ian McShane) acting is superb, as usual. The young lead is good too, and getting with the king's daughter is a risky move since we know the king is down with eliminating those in his way (though David is naive and doesn't know that).

------- SPOILER for anyone who missed the first episode:

I thought it was really interesting that they made the king's son gay and closeted (despite a reputation as a womanizer). That's secretly why the king won't let him advance too far (that's the reason he gets snubbed for military promotions), and they're setting up a power struggle/coup from within the family.

I'm not totally sold, but I'll keep watching for now.
441430, I liked it.. alot.. but

You know thats the basis of the story no? It is the modern telling of the story of David.. Its the whole point of the show.. To put a modern twist on it.. Supposedly from reviews of the first four episodes, its going to be dope..
We'll see though..
441431, btw...

That was basically pretty close to the biblical version as you can go.. even the names.. and the kings son in the bible was similar.. according to historical evidence..
441434, I didn't know that until after I watched it.
Posted by McDeezNuts, Tue Mar-17-09 02:19 PM
I certainly caught plenty of Biblical references but I didn't know it was supposed to be an actual retelling in modern day.

In any case, I'm hoping they can tell a good story without making it too "religiousy", that's all.
441435, yea the actual "historical rumors": are

His mate was David.. and thats what caused the rift.. even the prophecy in the beginning was similar to the biblical story..
441433, I tried to.

The story seems pretty cool but the tone is a tad overbearing for me.
441449, Well made but empty

The main character and his girlfriend just don't have any sort of life or personality. I'm supposed to root for them but Ian McShane's King blew them out of the water and he was really the only person I gave a damn about.

They didn't really establish the world well either. I really have no idea how big the kingdom is or what the deal is with Gath. And why are tanks so hard to beat when there's also an airforce?

It was OK but I can't see myself bothering to watch it again.
442471, OK so I'm not the only one bothered by this

442635, if the show was better i'd say david should grow into his character
Posted by rob, Tue Mar-24-09 10:27 AM
and pairing him up with a king/actor that dominates would fit with what they should be aiming for dramatically.

i don't know wtf they're doing with the daughter.
441526, show looks really good

442622, episode 2 had some unbelievable moments
Posted by McDeezNuts, Tue Mar-24-09 08:37 AM
And by unbelievable, I mean I'm not buying it (not unbelievable as in "wow that's cool").

Still, it's pretty cool overall and held my attention for the hour. I like that the deposed former king is being kept in prison while everyone thinks he'd dead. Very curious what the backstory is there - what information was the king trading him in exchange for his hidden gold? And I can't wait to know the lead chick's secret too.

From what I've read though, the show won't last as the ratings are very low.
442633, it should be a miniseries and was mismarketed
Posted by rob, Tue Mar-24-09 09:58 AM
i'm watching it. the cheese factor is high but the actors are generally good and the writing isn't horrible.
444931, Damn, got demoted to Saturday
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue Apr-07-09 08:09 PM
You'd think NBC would just let it die a quiet death on Sunday rather than get even more bad publicity about another cancelled show.

Tried to watch Southland on hulu but wasn't feeling it. Might give it another shot later.
