great movie all around, but the Danny Boy scene alone puts it on top.

haven't seen Friends of Eddie Coyle yet but it sounds good, want to check that one out.

Yeah, that's the best. "State of Grace" is kina close, but there's just too many classic scenes in "Miller's." Besides the "Danny Boy" scene, there's the "ALWAYS PUT ONE IN THE BRAIN!!!!" scene. That one is kinda slept on.

I worship the Coen Bros. The word "genius" is tossed around to much but the creative output of these two ((with the asisstance of Barry Levinson and Roger Dickinson)), truly warrants the word.

Miller's Crossing is my sentimental favorite and I've seen it a grillion times. It's only recently been edged out as my favorite by No Country For Old Men.

And I also gotta say ((janey hipped me to this a while ago)) they have this incredibly unique ability to succinctly name characters. Not in the "cutesy nickname" way of Wes Anderson but in a way that so fits the time and place and mood of their films. How can you not love the big-gu/little-guy tandem of "Frankie" and "Tic-Tac".

And lastly, noone's been able to settle my beef with the breakdown of the events that must have transpired for Verna to poop Rug Daniels.

the only significance it plays is that they can't get made cuz they're not full-blooded Italian. but they could've been Jewish or Polish or whatever instead of Irish and it would've been the same difference.

He rose pretty freaking far in the Italian mob for being an Irishman. The only higher one I can think of is Francis "Irishman" Sheeran who was listed by Rudy Giuliani in the "Commission Case" indictment as being a MEMBER OF THE MAFIA'S COMMISSION!! It sounds improbable for this Irish hitman, who was basically just muscle with the extreme good fortune of being tight with Russell Buffalino, to be on the Commission...buuuuuuuttt...I figure Giuliani would know much better than I.

The way I've read it and understand the true history is the only entry listed in the register of the hospital or church where Jimmy The Gent burke was given up for adoption lists the birth mother's name only as "Conway". There's no first name nor birth father's listing.

The poster above says the mother was born in Dublin. He's more than likely right as I'm pretty sure he knows a lot of mafia and mob history.

James Burke went on to be raised in various foster homes, almost always being abused and in one there was also an instance of sexual molestation. The most vicious one he lived in, also the one he lived in longest, featured an almost unbelievable tragedy. The foster father was simultaneously driving as well as delivering a beating to Jimmy in the backseat. Jimmy, by now, was in his early teens and was giving as well as he got. The foster father crashed the car and dieed in the crash. The guy's wife kept custody of Jimmy. It wasn't out of any affection or love however, as she blamed him for her husband's death and continued to torment and torture the kid until signing him over to the state who promptly put him into the Youth Authority for his constant criminal activity. He was such a tough bastard he was doing real time in his teens and that's how he ended up doing "hits for mob bosses at 16" as Henry Hill puts it.

I'm not one of those "blame the crimes of the criminal on his poor childhood" types but I can't help but wonder if this guy ever had what could be considered: A) an actual "childhood" or B) anyone show him love or compassion as an impressionable youth.

Jimmy was full Irish. Henry was half.

I actually bought it before it really got popular, on the strength of the cover the the $9.99 price lol

I thought it was awkward and weird.

Some parts were downright terrible...like their utterly unlikeable, hippie-looking, Italian mob buddy who deserved to die...but they still made his death this melodramatic, slow-mo episode with the brothers screaming like it was their mother.

I gagged.

The ending, with them crashing through the ceiling in the court house? Ugh.

I'm almost certain it achieved cult status by how ridiculously stupid it is, but the question is...is it purposely stupid/classic, like "Army of Darkness", or is it an epic failure movie that's classic because it's that lame (like the 60's b-movies), and we can marvel at it's stupidity.

yeah I mean it's not necessarily an overtly "Irish Mob" movie, but almost everyone in the movie's Irish so I put it in. and there's an Irish bar in NYC called Rocky Sullivan's, so yeah it counts - LOL.

it was between GoNY and Road to Perdition for the last spot. both flawed movies that I like, but GoNY gets the nod.

criminally slept on movie.

Even though the immigrant gangs in question were Irish, it was mainly a period piece, and IMO, it was about immigration and assimulation.

People complained about the accents, but the main characters were young, and have been in the states for awhile, so they had "mutt" accents that came out @ certain points.

You know some people, tho...I want to find something to complain about.

I think the main complaint was that people wanted a gang/mob movie, and it involved that, but it was a very broad story.

i wasn't really fond of the movie, but he keeps you interested.

It's a little more somber than Miller's Crossing but overall it's a bit more memorable to me.

That's one of my all-time favorite movies right there.

Since Monument Ave, Southie, and some others....I'm kinda leary about those "childhood friends going separate ways"/loyalty themed Boston movies.

(we've likely talked about this before)

and it was surprinsingly good. Very somber.

The hitman that was sitting in the bar all day, reading the newspaper, was cool as shit.

The music was dope. Rosario Dawson looked beautiful w/ her 80's attire.

I always assumed it was just another one of those burns "dating mishaps of a catholic in new york" woody allen type joints.

And it's not really shoot'em up.

It takes place in Hells Kitchen in the early 80's.

Elijah Wood plays Sean Sullivan...a good kid who hears some local thugs talking about murking his big brother (Edward Burns) while working a bar. While they're taking a leak in the bathroom, he grabs a gun and offs them.

Their father was John Sullivan. A local legend who ran the docks back in the days.

Ed Burns plays Francis "Frankie" Sullivan. 3 years after Sean murked his brothers' would-be killers then disappeared (apparently killed), Frankie runs a bar and has given up his thug ways since his brother disappeared.

Rumors are affloat that people around the neighborhood saw "Sean's ghost" walking around.
This causes problems between the "old school" neighborhood boss, Whitey Smith (played by famed Irish author, Frank McCourt), who was a friend of the Sullivans, and young, hot-headed up'n comer Moran, (played by a surprisingly cool Oliver Platt), who was cousins with the guys Sean murked.

The plot thickens when Sean's young bride, played by Rosario Dawson, has grown close to Frankie in Sean's absence (she doesn't know he's still alive). Not to mention that Sean has a 3 year old son that he doesn't know about.

For a movie that I found in the budget bin, it's really good. The music is real somber, and being that it was filmed IN Hells Kitchen right in the middle of gentrification...it fits the depressing mood. It's like saying goodbye to the kitchen.

I actually like Burns. I enjoyed "The Brothers McMullen", and I own "She's the One" on dvd. Sometimes don't like his narcisstic casting of himself as the lead in his own movies, but you can almost enjoy watching him get his Irish-guy-from-New-Yack rocks off lol He does everything but look at the camera and do the finger gun @ you lol

One thing I like is how he hires Irish-American actors. He doesn't grab joe shmo and have him play the role of "Paddie McGonagle".

Oh, and Rosario Dawson is pure eye-candy in her long 80's hair, beret, and knee high leather boots lol

was good

Gabriel Byrne would've been great as Michael Sullivan I think, he's perfect for that brooding, melancholy type role, but he's not nearly as big a draw as Hanks.

still liked the movie though. the cinematography was excellent, Newman is great as John Rooney, and I love the shootout scene in the rain.

Harris vs Neeson looks like a winning combo, gonna try to catch it this weekend.

Enjoyable though.

again I wouldn't put it up there with those in the poll but definitely worth a watch. You could also say the same for the Guard.

I remember for a long time I couldn't understand why more people didn't love this film.

Now I feel like I hear it mentioned more and more as a "Great Film" (top 3 cohen for me).
