440159, Recommend a good TV series to me.
Posted by Backbone, Tue Mar-10-09 03:23 PM
Preferably one that has been running for a while so I'll have a lot of episodes to catch up with.

I'm currently following Lost (okay), Heroes (yuck), Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (great), Fringe (okay to good), and 24 (Jack Bauer) as they come out, but I need more.

I have already seen (and greatly enjoyed) all of The Wire and Generation Kill.

Comedies (in the vein of Seinfeld, Arrested Development and 30 Rock) are welcome as well. I prefer no laugh track, and refuse to watch the US version of the Office out of pure unadulterated Euro snobbery.

So who wants to help me (and possibly some others) out?
440160, Six Feet Under?
Posted by FortifiedLive, Tue Mar-10-09 03:24 PM
440164, Good one.
Posted by Backbone, Tue Mar-10-09 03:32 PM
Totally forgot about it.

Close to finishing the Sopranos as well, so I might go with Six Feet Under after that. Thanks for reminding me.
440170, oh definitely.

be warned that it can take over your life like a surrogate family and you'll love and hate each character and by the time the series is over you'll feel like you lived several lives.

440173, I've seen some episodes,
Posted by Backbone, Tue Mar-10-09 03:39 PM
because my friends refused to watch anything else even though I was visiting and wasn't following Six Feet at the time. I liked what I saw, and the fact that it made my friends completely a-social towards me is promising as well.
440341, You just captured my emotions on this show!
Posted by Futakuchi-onna, Wed Mar-11-09 01:17 PM
440351, yup, i flip-flopped on each character throughout the series.
Posted by FortifiedLive, Wed Mar-11-09 01:53 PM
probably not so much on Claire. loved her throughout.

but in the end, you love them all. i was sad to see it end.
440354, the only one I never hated
Posted by janey, Wed Mar-11-09 02:01 PM
was Nathaniel (the dad).

The only one I never liked was Ruth.

Everyone else had their day but had to suffer through my abiding hatred.

By the end of the series I hated every goddamn one of them. And the series finale made it all worthwhile.

440162, Psych and Chuck
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Mar-10-09 03:28 PM
Psych is amazing. It's in between seasons though w/ S4 starting in the summer i think.

Chuck i like. Good action, lotta funny geek stuff and a great cast.
440166, I have seen one episode of Psych
Posted by Backbone, Tue Mar-10-09 03:33 PM
and I'm afraid that it will get boring after a while because the main character is just too smart. Do they manage to keep it exciting in spite of his perfection? If so, I'll check it out.

I will also check out Chuck, never heard of it, but it's getting good reviews so it might be worth it.

Thanks.

actually i'd say Shawn isnt that smart. yeah he's got something between the ears but he's not perfect. he's just a psychic.

his buddy Gus is smarter than him i think.

but yeah it stays exciting because Shawn and Gus are a riot.
440312, I think I confused Psych with the mentalist.

Shit, this post is killing my free time already.
440169, I *just* started Nip/Tuck on JungleSouljah's recommendation
Posted by janey, Tue Mar-10-09 03:36 PM
I've seen three episodes and I think it could go either way, but I'm determined to watch at least a full season before making an irrevocable decision.

Rome (S1 & S2) is really really great. Very high production values and incredibly satisfying, as well as engrossing, edifying, and funny at times.

I also really like MI:5 and there are about 5 seasons of that. The first two seasons of Wire in the Blood are great. S3 is kind of dragging for me.

For context, I also really loved The Wire & Gen Kill and I mostly like shows that have a season arc rather than being episodic.

440176, Thanks.

I also prefer season arcs, especially because episodic arcs tend to render things predictable.

I'm definitely checking out Rome, which I had also forgotten about, and MI:5 looks interesting at well.

Maybe I should ask people to stop recommending stuff now, I don't want to be holed up in the house all summer.

It sucks that you just missed the season by a week or two, but they have 5 seasons for you to catch up on. I find people who watch this how take it pretty seriously, especially for a reality show

Also check out Drawn Together (3 seasons all great), Strangers with Candy (first season was perfect, last two were disappointing and on par with the movie if you seen it), Weeds (I enjoyed all three seasons), Scrubs (has tons of seasons, the current of which may be its last one), Freaks and Geeks (and Undeclared if you liked that...both of these only have 1 season though but they are considered great), Avatar the Lost Airbender (three seasons I think, but VERY addicting and well written), King of the Hill, and then there is always the first 9 seasons of the Simpsons (seasons 3 and 4 being my favorite).

440218, Breaking Bad
Posted by Mynoriti, Tue Mar-10-09 08:20 PM

The Wire
Carnival
440516, Reaper and Supernatural
Posted by spades, Thu Mar-12-09 09:56 AM
Reaper's not that far along but it's a pretty funny series, and supernatural is great right now. The leads have good chemistry and the story is intricate and well-written.
