438025, Now that Watchmen is done, what's the next "unfilmable" comic movie? Posted by KneelB4Me, Wed Dec-31-69 07:00 PM
For the longest, Watchmen was considered to be unfilmable, or at least, unable to be filmed correctly. Now, for better or worse, it's been done and available for us to pass judgment on shortly. What's the next great comic story that is unlikely to be made?

Or, the title, at least
And that's with or without Christopher Nolan on board ________________________________________________________________________ Until next time, America.

438419, this one seems entirely filmable Posted by tappenzee, Tue Mar-03-09 03:19 PM
Dark Knight Returns seems like it's just begging to be made into a movie, albeit with plenty of tweaking to the plot.

don't know if it's still in the works but I'd prefer a tv show rather than a movie. Dogma is probably the closest u can get to a film adaptation

into a great movie.
The problem is, a lot of the effectiveness of the story is based on knowing the extensive history of each character (and not just Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman). That type of shit is anathema to Hollywood.

But it would probably require a completely new script by Gaiman, as opposed to your typical comic book adaptation. Animation might be a good look, too.

438169, Any team or team-up movie Posted by El_Pistolero, Mon Mar-02-09 06:44 PM
Really, I don't think these films can work.
First off, there is too much legal stuff from preventing these from being made. Of course, we all want continuity but can it happen? Can all the same actors from the individual films (assuming all the individual films will be made) be cast in the team movie? Will the studios allow their actors to reprise their roles in films by other studios?
Point two, it's gonna be a clusterfuck. I have my doubts whether or not all these superheroes together will make a good film.

Too many characters, back story/origins pieced together over dozens of issues, stories almost always "start in the middle."
You ***MIGHT*** be able to make an interesting TVseries with some of the one-shots, but even in that case the series would be waaaay to expensive to do well.

438215, Anything related to the New Gods or the Fourth World Posted by mrhood75, Mon Mar-02-09 09:39 PM
There's only like three comic book writers on the planet that have figured out how to use the characters correctly. Keep them the fuck away from Hollywood screen-writers.

|
438219, You could totally pull a Persepolis with that one Posted by buckshot defunct, Mon Mar-02-09 10:07 PM
(assuming animation is fair game here)
Maus is like the Anti-Watchmen... It doesn't hot dog around with the medium AT ALL. It's pure, no-frills storytelling. I remember hearing an anecdote where someone complimented Spiegelman on a particular visual - I want to say it was a caption in the form of a ticket stub or something - and he just took it out completely, because the fact that someone mentioned it means it stuck out. He didn't want anything distracting from the story.
|
438224, i'd argue that certain parts, like when "his metaphor falls apart" Posted by There Will Be duD, Mon Mar-02-09 10:23 PM
(when talking about being a house full of cats while his character was still a mouse), depend completely upon the fact that the story is being told in first person as a cartoonist.
i think it wouldn't work in the same way that "breakfast of champions" didn't translate to film.

442736, They 're about to butcher my favorite comic Posted by Nappy Soul, Wed Mar-25-09 03:12 AM
I just finished all 10 books of Y: The Last man and it blew me away from beginning to end.
Now is see this:http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/07/22/dj-carusos-y-the-last-man-in-summer-2010/ ... and this... http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/07/30/alicia-keys-as-agent-355-in-y-the-last-man/
The book is so epic and complex that they couldn't possibly fit it into a movie...Even a trilogy would seem whack. The only way it could work would be in a television show format... An HBO type show with production values on par with shows like Carnivale and True Blood. I mean Brian K. Vaughan did an excellent job on Lost and is a proven writer but the director is who I'm worried about; Disturbia and Eagle Eye? So , basically they gonna cast Shia Leboeuf as Yorick?
I really enjoyed Watchmen, despite reading the graphic novel, but Y is a different animal because the movie would be sold through the interaction between actors. Not visuals. And the fact that they already got non-real-actors like Lee lee in mind, further lets me know that this going to be a donkey show on celluloid.
|
442748, I think it would be extremely easy to adapt Posted by Brother_Afron, Wed Mar-25-09 07:17 AM
But you're right in that it will depend completely on the actors involved.
|
442768, I like Shia, actually Posted by KneelB4Me, Wed Mar-25-09 11:31 AM
He's at that perfect stage of man-boyness where Yorick starts out. I'm getting kind of sick of him being in everything, though, lol.
But I do agree that it needs to be an HBO series; not even a trilogy could do it justice.
