437261, Spike Lee would write/direct a good Black Vietnam War flick right?
Posted by normal35762, Fri Feb-27-09 12:21 AM
I would think so. Like a movie from the perspective of some black soldiers. What do you think?
437264, He made a good black WWII flick, so I don't see why not.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Feb-27-09 12:49 AM
437266, he did?

438010, it was pretty lackluster.

437270, no more war flicks please, spike
Posted by howisya, Fri Feb-27-09 01:30 AM
i can't believe ?uest wanted us all to go out and see it in the theater to support out of principle, but i'm glad i didn't listen to him and waited to see it this month...
437372, it wasn't that bad
Posted by Wordman, Fri Feb-27-09 12:17 PM
Probably not one of Spike's best, but it was alright.

437375, the thing is, spike doesn't know how to direct fast action sequences.
Posted by PlanetInfinite, Fri Feb-27-09 12:23 PM
if he takes the war movie and moves it to his pace without trying to splice jumpcuts and explosions and shit.

kinda how john woo was able to make a WWII movie (windtalkers).
it kinda sucked. but he didn't try to make it like saving private ryan.

and miracle of st anna was okay.

437438, john woo's bullet in the head was SOOOOOO much better

than that fucking bullshit.
437763, obviously....
Posted by zuma1986, Sun Mar-01-09 11:08 AM
Thats like saying that Annie Hall is soooooooo much better than Interiors. When it's the director's established forte of coarse its going to be better. Does this really need to be explained?
437919, but bullet in the head was something quite different
Posted by shockzilla, Mon Mar-02-09 02:14 AM
it wasn't exactly the killer, was it?
437379, get in your delorean and set the dial for 1988 with this bullshit

nobody care about vietnam anymore.

These days, Spike Lee movies featuring White People are more interesting then his "Black Movies".

>These days, Spike Lee movies featuring White People are more
>interesting then his "Black Movies".

a)The only "black" movie he's made in recent yrs was St.Anna, and that one had people of all races all over it. So I'm not even sure what you're talking about. He doesn't make exclusive "black" movies anymore largely because they aren't that profitable(not his fault, just a demographic thing).

b)Even his "movies featuring white people" often have black leads
or blacks in very prominent positions and a very signature Spike
Lee touch on them(Inside Man).

So really, I'm not sure what you're talking about.

see also again: jungle fever, i think it was-- where he has wesley snipes grab a child and shout noooooooooooooooo up to the heavens.

spike lee beats you over the head with the message.
437495, you're definitely new here

I can't tell you how many times "the Spike Lee ending" has come up here.
No offense meant Ms. Parker. Considered yourself grateful for having missed those posts.

437447, historically speaking, that doesn't even make any sense

The armed services were segregated during WWII, thus making the black perspective/experience angle interesting enough to make a decent story. Anything beyond Korea is pointless if you are trying to go for that angle. Otherwise you'd just be talking about 1 or 2 black guys in mostly white units. Then it no longer becomes a story about the unit, but rather about the individual soldiers themselves.
437477, look how educated this guy is...
Posted by Clark Kent, Fri Feb-27-09 09:55 PM
hey man you wowed us with all that historical info...but where did it say anything about a whole unit??

The fact that the race dynamics take place in the context
of whites might make it more interesting, as would the idea
of focusing on individual soldiers and their stories.

In fact, I know blacks who fought in Vietnam who told me
about race dynamics in the military then and how they were
almost race riots in some parts of the military, but because
everyone was armed no one wanted to set it off.

Tons of room for interesting material here.
