i said it had a similar appeal (from a upper class fascination standpoint) and that helped make it more escapist. it's leaps and bounds beyond a soap opera, that's obvious. i'm speaking to the point of realism and and escapism in comparing the wire and the sopranos to be honest i think the wire is as escapist for black people who come from the suburbs and watch it as the sopranos is for white people who are lower to middle class and watch it but in terms of helping to explain why the audience for the wire wasn't as large, there's an escapism that the sopranos provides that is more comfortable for a larger group of people than the wire's audience.
