443502, Did this really need to be two hours?
Posted by Bombastic, Mon Mar-30-09 12:20 PM
I actually fell asleep last night before seeing how this concluded but based on the hour plus I saw I'd say it probably could have been condensed a bit.

Jill Scott is charming in the lead role but I'm not really sure this is a show I feel compelled to follow weekly.

It's cool to see a different environment but at the end of the day the private-detective conceit is pretty run-of-the-mill and I'm not sure the backdrop really changes that.
443561, Yes it did
Posted by ZooTown74, Mon Mar-30-09 07:26 PM
There was a lot to accomplish here: give Precious' backstory, establishing the shop (and thus, the show's premise), and letting us see Precious do her thing and interact with everyone in her world, which was necessary for her to be credible as a detective... you just can't accomplish all of that in one hour, or even an hour, 30 minutes...

I thought the script was well-paced, and the direction was on-point (R.I.P., Anthony Minghella)...

eh, I knew where they were going with the backstory and the shop in the first few minutes......they just took their sweet time getting there and it didn't really add much for me.
443956, it was a tv movie on the bbc
Posted by Iltigo, Thu Apr-02-09 10:11 AM
after positve reviews they re-upped moved the cast back to botswana and started filimg the series.

the "pilot episode" is actually the bbc tv movie from last year

so yes it had to be two hours

443554, This was great. A breath of fresh air.

I wonder what the future will bring considering the passing of both Minghella and Pollack.
443774, RE: I fell asleep on it
Posted by ya Setshego, Wed Apr-01-09 07:51 AM
not because it was not good, but because I was really tired, and I have not had 2 waking hours at home since to finish watching it. I liked what I saw though. From my recollection though, Tswana women donot dress in African prints like Jilly did. That was something that perplexed me when I was there. They did wear their hair wrapped though, and taught me how to wrap mine, for which I remain grateful. One thing that I thought was backwards was that when you wear your head wrap high, in a gelee, they call that the Erykah Badu. Now as much as I love Erykah, that is just bass ackwards. That is a style she adopted from Africa, and there is already an African word for it, so why not use it? Anyway, it's a given that I would watch Jill on HBO everyweek. I mean, it's JILL, for Pete's Sake! The LA Times called her "A Revelation". They are just figuring THAT out?
443822, =( i don't have hbo

Even though you knew how it would turn out, and could see the list of usual suspects (good natured, strong willed main character with a bad past, cookoo/high strung/neurotic sidekick, 'will they/wont they get it on' friend, the 'token' character, either black, white or gay, depending on the makeup of the series), I still found it pretty well done and hope that it succeeds on its own merit, not just because of Jill Scott (who does a fine job in this, BTW)
444268, I really enjoyed this...
Posted by Shelly, Fri Apr-03-09 06:23 PM
Jill Scott and Anika Noni Rose have good chemistry.

Shit happens
444492, it's still weird to me
Posted by BigWorm, Sun Apr-05-09 05:26 PM
That this was Anthony Minghella's last project before he died.

I mean, good for him, great for Jill Scot, but...what?!?

444635, This show needs a tad bit more to go offf...
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Apr-06-09 01:23 PM
then the charm of Jilly & Botswana. The case of the missing dog? That's just not that interesting. Also, the mysterious could be more, um, mystery-like. The show doesn't have very good plot exposed "here's what happen moments". WIll continue to watch.

the cast/characters are likeable and the plots and scenary are good.

the show is like a younger, fresher, African version of "Murder She Wrote"
447355, this is the impression i'm getting

I'd also like to see some cases that are not resolved in one episode. Otherwise, I still like it.
