430013, Worst actor to win an Oscar vs worst Oscar winning performance
Posted by AnonymousCoward, Tue Jan-27-09 10:38 AM
Geena Davis and Mira Sorvino are probably the worst actors to ever receive the award, but Cuba may have won with the worst performance.
430016, Julia Roberts for both.

430037, Julia Roberts is definitely worse than Geena Davis as an actor.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Jan-27-09 12:12 PM
And Sorvino's performance is Mighty Aphrodite >>>>>> Roberts' performance in Pretty Woman.
430045, Sorvino in Mighty Aphrodite>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Any Roberts performance

Nick Cage possibly, altho he used to be better during that time, took more risks with his roles and actually seemed to give a shit when he was acting.
430028, It's only a nomination
Posted by chief1284, Tue Jan-27-09 11:36 AM
But I recently busted out Good Will Hunting (I only saw it when it came out) and saw on the box Minnie Driver was nominated for best supporting actress. Fucking ridiculous. Embarrassing really.
430041, WTF??? You gotta be joking.

"In 1997 she starred in the popular and financially successful film Good Will Hunting (1997) opposite Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who also wrote the screenplay for the film and received Oscars for their achievement. The film also earned Minnie an Oscar nomination for best actress in a supporting role."

I am NOT joking.
430204, it was for that crying scene when Will tripped out on her...
Posted by mykonsept, Tue Jan-27-09 06:52 PM
after she caught him in that lie about his brothers. Also, she was kinda funny telling jokes to him and his boys. That combined with the fact the Academy liked the story so much, she got the nod. Robin Williams was fantastic in the movie tho.
430450, Minnie Driver is a good actress!
Posted by Lights Out, Wed Jan-28-09 04:07 PM
Do you watch The Riches? She's really good in that...
430455, but she got fucked & chucked shortly thereafter & nows making bad albums
Posted by Bombastic, Wed Jan-28-09 04:11 PM
she's suffered enough.
430924, U make sound like she was terrible in the film
Posted by zuma1986, Fri Jan-30-09 01:37 AM
She was great, did she deserve an oscar? probably not but I mean most of the nominations are jokes anyway (Jason Reitman for Best Director? Are you kidding?). So the fact that she was nominated isn't that a big a shock or even an upset b/c she was good in it.
430035, FOH. Cuba's performance is fucking terrific.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Jan-27-09 12:05 PM
430192, yup, people forget how good Cuba could act

And yeah, he was really good in "JM." It's not his fault "Show me the Money" got played out.
430047, Jamie Foxx

430208, Foxx should been nominated for 'Any Given Sunday'

It's a shame that he didn't get more notice for that film and had to go back to doing shitty movies for a minute. Hopefully he takes some quality control and stops doing Stealth and keeps doing more like his upcming film.
430084, Cuba's Rod Tidwell was fantastic. FOH.

Regina could have gotten a nod for her performance as well.

Cuba was also great in as good as it gets.

Anecdote: I was walking through the Seaport in NYC and heard a familar voice and turned around it was Cuba. He seemed down and it sounded like he was talking about how bad Snow Dogs (or maybe daddy day camp whatever it was at the time) did that weekend "Yeah its sounding like its only going to do 5 mil"

The acting nom(s) for that movie should've went to Russel Crowe &/or Guy Pearce if anyone at all.

430292, She's a bad actress but that was a solid performance
Posted by AnonymousCoward, Wed Jan-28-09 08:02 AM
430459, that movie & that performance were both laughable
Posted by Bombastic, Wed Jan-28-09 04:19 PM
I mean, people in the theater I saw it in were literally clowning her at the beginning of that 'I Want You To Make Me Feel Good!' scene and then by the time it started going into Billy Bob's full-scale thrashing folks were either dying laughing or whooping it up cheering like the '11 O'Clock News' team in Kentucky Fried Movie.

Of course that was Baltimore City and you often had people clowning in the theater but still I can't take that movie at all seriously after that experience. I think Puff put a better performance together than Halle though.

Not to mention the 'get raw & we might throw you a bone' (no pun intended) message the Academy was sending that year.
430312, geena davis is a great actress. cuba was great. j. roberts for both.

430447, Didnt Kevin Spacey win best actor over Zel in Hurricane
Posted by JAESCOTT777, Wed Jan-28-09 03:48 PM
w/ American Beauty?

I loved American Beauty
but i dont know if that was a best actor performance

430461, Spacey was great in that flick & I'm not a huge fan of him or the movie
Posted by Bombastic, Wed Jan-28-09 04:20 PM
.
430531, That was a REALLY crowded year for Best Actor noms
Posted by mrhood75, Wed Jan-28-09 06:43 PM
I honestly loved every single performance that got nominated (it also included Crowe for "The Insider," Richard Fransworht for "The STraight Story," and Penn for "Sweet and Lowdown"). I wouldn't have minded one bit if any of them had won.
430926, FACT!
Posted by zuma1986, Fri Jan-30-09 01:41 AM
I hate when ppl complain in years where it's crowded (1995 was packed), I mean it's probably so close that they all are only 5 or 6 votes apart so it's not like the whole academy is in agree in who received the statue.
430474, Pacino in Scent of a Woman
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Jan-28-09 04:37 PM
He didn't give an F about that performance.

I mean so many of the movies that sweep the oscars are forgotten in a few years. I mean how many ppl point to goodfellas as their fav film vs. dances with wolves?

I'm just glad they gave it to Scorsese for The Departed and not for The Aviator which deserved it even less.

Dude was a hack actor who basically played the same role for 40 years

*edit*
Nic Cage would be my runner up

Iliked Wayne in "Red River" (Though the ending sucked ass). Otherwise, I completely agree.

Eh, I kind of like Nic Cage. Not for the last four years or so. But "Matchstick Men" was cool.
430833, You know it's funny because I used to really like Cage
Posted by OldPro, Thu Jan-29-09 06:47 PM
Raising Arizona is one of my favorite movies. Dude was fantastic in it too. But over the years he's just become more and more unwatchable to me.
