Flipping over to the Golden Globes has me in the awards mood. And I promise this time I'll actually vote.

Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Jan-11-09 11:44 PM
I wanna give folks a chance to see those films that are only now getting distributed. I'm only now getting some of the acclaimed indie flicks of the year.
426441, Gotcha
Posted by Marauder21, Mon Jan-12-09 12:00 AM
I still haven't seen Slumdog, Doubt, or Milk yet.
426442, My to-see list:
Posted by Frank Longo, Mon Jan-12-09 12:12 AM
(if I'm lucky, I'll get to all of these)

Benjamin Button
Valkyrie
Flight of the Red Balloon
Chop Shop
Waltz With Bashir
Rachel Getting Married
I've Loved You So Long
Frozen River
Elegy
Transsiberian
Ballast
Taxi to the Dark Side (is this 2008?)
The Spirit (cuz fuck it, it sounds funny)
426444, I'd also like to see Rachel and Taxi to the Dark Side
Posted by Marauder21, Mon Jan-12-09 12:36 AM
Waltz, too.

I'm pretty sure I already have my top 5 pictures of the year, though.

I plan on double dipping with Doubt and Slumdog tomorrow (AMC gold gift certificates FTW.) This weekend has been my awards season catch-up (outside of those two I saw the Wrestler, Burn After Reading and Revolutionary Road, was going to see Milk but it was sold out.)

426451, Waltz With Bashir was pretty amazing
Posted by 40thStreetBlack, Mon Jan-12-09 03:03 AM
dunno how wide a release it's getting though.

Rachel Getting Married sucked.

Slumdog is great, but you probably already know that's the consensus.
426611, just saw a preview for WwB before the wrestler
Posted by Drizzit, Mon Jan-12-09 06:57 PM
i love well done animation, so i this is must see for me. looks very good.
426633, By tomorrow, I meant the next day it wasn't a fucking blizzard

Posted by Ceej, Mon Jan-12-09 07:51 AM

slumdogg
milk feat emile hirsch
revolutionary
frost/nixon
ben butt
doubt

any other MUST sees for the season?/

I still think this is a daunting task for me but like last year ima make a valiant effort
426558, How about non-awards season flicks?
Posted by Sponge, Mon Jan-12-09 03:56 PM
These are 3 non-awards season flicks getting some awards season buzz (the last 2 for the lead performances):

Eddie Marsan and Sally Hawkins are fantastic in Happy-Go-Lucky which, I believe, is coming out on DVD a few weeks before the Oscars. Hawkins has won a couple of awards already. It's a good movie, too.

The Visitor is a good movie directed by Thomas McCarthy (The Wire). Jenkins and Abbass are amazing. So is Haaz Sleiman. DVD already out.

Melissa Leo and Misty Upham in Frozen River. Leo is fantastic. DVD out soon.

These aren't players in awards season, but up for the PTP awards I would think:

Off the top, Chop Shop is the best American film I've seen this year so far. I've still yet to see The Wrestler and Revolutionary Road (not really anticipating the latter).

4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days is a great, tense film with an amazing performance by Anamaria Marinca. Great cast, too.

Michael Shannon in Shotgun Stories is a notable male lead performance. I might include him in my top 5. It's a very good movie, too. A revenge-family feud flick. Great cast, too, even the bit parts.

Quite a few others I'm forgetting, for sure.

I get to see Ballast at the end of the month. That's another well-thought of film.
426559, oh I know I'm missin a bunch.
Posted by Ceej, Mon Jan-12-09 03:59 PM
I'm jus tryin to be realistic in my attempt. I have such a hard time not sleeping durin movies that sometimes a film will take me 4 trys to get thru and that in no way has to do with the quality of the movie I jus fall the fuck asleep and it sucks. Thats why i try to get a doable list with the musts and try my damdest.

Do you have the Che films on On-Demand/PPV?

I was thinking Happy-Go-Lucky was gonna be a must considering Sally Hawkins got nominated and won numerous acting awards, but she ended up getting snubbed by the Academy.
426485, Sacha's joke about Guy Ritche was hilarious...& his other jokes too
Posted by jambone, Mon Jan-12-09 12:18 PM
426501, a movie about a mans face gettin younger the older he gets
Posted by Ceej, Mon Jan-12-09 01:18 PM

429847, Question on 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
Posted by Sponge, Mon Jan-26-09 05:24 PM
Anyone here planning on nominating it in a category or 2? Or are you guys considering it ineligible?
432035, yooooooo
Posted by Ceej, Tue Feb-03-09 11:09 PM
432037, A post will go up tomorrow morning.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-03-09 11:36 PM
432040, RE: A post will go up tomorrow morning.
Posted by Sponge, Tue Feb-03-09 11:39 PM
Is 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days eligible?
432041, Since it was nominated for nothing last year, yes.
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue Feb-03-09 11:40 PM
432044, RE: Since it was nominated for nothing last year, yes.
Posted by Sponge, Tue Feb-03-09 11:47 PM
Are you talking about Oscars nomination or SLA nominations?
432048, SLAs, lol.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Feb-04-09 12:11 AM
We don't care about the Oscars here.
432049, RE: SLAs, lol.
Posted by Sponge, Wed Feb-04-09 12:26 AM
In that case, a couple of people (and by that I think 2 or 3 people) nominated 4M3W2D for a couple of SLA categories, mostly acting, but I think screenplay and perhaps best film or director. Is it still eligible?

>We don't care about the Oscars here.

Overall, false. In regards to what goes on our ballots, true.
432082, sweet
