I don't think we've had a truly great baseball movie yet, and I know that's a mighty heavy burden to put on Sugar, but if it's even half as good as I found Half Nelson to be, then it shouldn't have a problem qualifying in that department.

Definitely. Guy Ritchie's last picture interested me not an inch (retread, retread, retread), but a story like Sherlock Holmes' seems like enough of a change. Plus, anything RDJ does is worth consideration at this point (ditto Rachel McAdams).

I saw the trailer, and I dunno, looks kinda ordinary.

Four reasons why I'm anticipating I Love You, Man.

1. I actually enjoyed the trailer. Not groundbreaking but I broke out a smile and a chuckle more than a couple times ("deep in my mouth", "you wanna get a corndog", the Andy Samberg / J.K. Simmons exchange, etc.).

2. Early test screenings have all been positive.

3. I used to not be a big Paul Rudd fan (he's the weak link in 40YOV, IMO), but after his string of Knocked Up, FSM, and Role Models, I've been converted.

4. Jason Segel is one of my two favorite contemporary actor persons (the other being Ryan Gosling). I've seen and been impressed by just about everything he's ever done. So, chances are I'd be anticipating any upcoming project of his. This one just happens to be I Love You, Man.

You pick up the Generation Kill DVDs? If you did, how are the extras?

I know that it's based on 8 1/2, but what about the play itself? Good?

The music is very Italian influenced, almost operatic at times. And the story... well, it's Fellini. I think it's a very well-executed melodramatic musical.

Here's a clip from when Antonio Banderas did Guido's first song from Nine at the Tonys. I didn't care too much for Banderas' performance, but it gives you a great idea of what you're gonna be looking at.

What do you think of the cast and their roles? What are you thoughts on it so far?

I don't know about Cruz and Hudson's voices, or Fergie's acting.

When it comes to Day-Lewis? *sucks in through teeth* I'm nervous about the singing, because it's not easy, but if ANYONE can do it, it's DDL. I like the casting of Bardem a little bit more simply because of the European look Bardem has, but DDL is an outstanding second place.

It's very similar to Chicago in staging, so Rob Marshall should make it look and sound beautiful, with terrific choreography and gorgeous sets and lighting.

I'd say Day-Lewis would have to really drop the ball for this to not be a front-runner for many Oscars.

I saw Chop Shop about three months ago or so, and it's proven to be one of those movies that every time I think about it my reaction to it only keeps getting stronger and stronger (in the right direction). Anyway, I finally got around to moving Man Push Cart near the top of my queue, and I figure if that one and GS can deliver like people say they do, then that's about as successful a start to any American (does dude consider himself that?) film director's career in a good while.

Yeah, I'm also curious to see if the characters are a bit more mature. KU was an improvement in the visual department. But let's see if Apatow tries to make more cohesive pictures rather than the, to me, cut and paste approach as a result of test screenings. It's like he doesn't really think in terms of events/jokes in relations to each other and the whole. His stuff feels like a compilation some times. It's works in 40 YOV, but less so for me in KU.

I had it ranked higher in the '08 Winter Films Anticipation post because I was hoping it would get a wide release in December. But it dropped a little because I read that the narrative was kind of unsatisfactory for some critics - too many plots, sloppy storytelling, needs better editing. Still the subject intrigues me.

Finished 4th place behind The Wrestler; Goodbye, Solo; and Still Walking in a critics poll for TIFF 08. Denis is one of my all-time favorite filmmakers. Godard is one of my all-time favorite cinematographers. They make visually and aurally impressive and ambitious films that seep into you and entrap you slowly. Ozu is one of my all-time favorite filmmakers, and this is inspired by Ozu and particularly Late Spring, one of my all-time favorite films. Seems like a film with a lot of heart.

Some say it has elements of Vertigo, but from what I gather, it’s like an arty enigmatic Rear Window in its use of editing and the part about a character looking at objects and people. The cinematographer Natasha Braier did amazing work in Glue and XXY.

After Happy-Go-Lucky, Marsan is all over my radar. Now, Me and Orson Welles has made it high on my list. Gracias.

I'm big fans of Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal. Plus it Alfonso Cuaran's brother directing. Hopefully the skills are good all around the family.

I know it's not a "serious" flick but it just looks stupid fun and the trailer is hilarious.

Stephen King's "The Long Walk" won't come out this year I don't think so that is most anticipated for 2010 and beyond, and probably my most anticipated film of all. Darabont directing (he of many past King adaptations: Shawshank, Green Mile, the Mist) and Darabont says it's his favorite Stephen King story, as it is mine by a wide margin.

Anyway as for '09:

Enter the Void - Gaspar Noe's ("Irreversible", "I Stand Alone") new flick, shooting currently in Tokyo and the US, based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Looks like it will be less of an all-out shockfest than his previous films, probably still with moments that will dumbfound you though

Avatar - James Cameron's first movie since 1997's "Titanic". In development for like 15 years, Cameron had to wait for technology to catch up to his vision. I would bet a lot of money this movie will pwn and blow everybody away the same way T2 did in '92.

Thirst - Park Chan-Wook's (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, etc.) vampire flick. Nuff said.

Where the Wild Things Are - Everybody knows about this

Black Hole - Fincher supposedly tackling this graphic novel next, about a strange virus among young people, set in the 70's and VERY dark.

Great year for movies imo.

The Soloist, I Love You, Man, The Brother's Bloom, Bruno, & The Wolf Man

They name a bunch that hasn't been mentioned yet in this post especially about past the half-way point starting with the "honorable mention" section and all the way to the end.

Forgot to mention earlier in this post in regards to the film Revanche that Criterion and Janus already snatched up the North American rights. DVD coming after theatrical release.

Too much for my short term memory to handle, but stuff of particular interest to me were the the Paul Feig, the Mike Judge, The Hangover, the cast of Jodorowsky's flick, and Bardem in an Arriaga-less Inarritu film.
