419763, 2009 Golden Globes Nominations
Posted by SankofaII, Thu Dec-11-08 10:28 AM
Viola Davis for Best Supporting Actress for DOUBT?
Sookie Stackhouse slayed her way into a Best Actress Nomination for TRUE BLOOD?
No Best Drama love for The Dark Knight?

And, why all this love for In Treatment? Were folk even CHECKING for this show when it aired last year? I like it, but I just never saw this as a popular show..and, knowing Blair Underwood was SLEPT on for his work on it....probably his best work to date?

But, i'll still watch it...Sherri Saum (Daniel Sunjata's girlfriend on Rescue Me) is one of the patients so that should be interesting...

thoughts? you agree? disagree?

419768, Why do I never know ANY of the movies that were nominated?
Posted by BlakGirlSoul, Thu Dec-11-08 10:49 AM
A few names ring a bell but not enough of them for me to be vested in the golden globes
419772, agreed...I felt like I should turn in my PTP card

this morning when I heard the list of noms. I wa slike, "What's Benny Buttons? What's Wrestler? What's Milk? hat's Doubt? What's Blizzard Frost??" - I mean usually I haven't SEEN the films I talk shit about, not haven't HEARD of them.

I'm not gonna even comment too much on the wackness of these nominations.

G.G.'s are always terrible anyway.

No "Dark Knight" or No "Wrestler" or No "Milk" or No "Syn. New York" for best drama??? No "Let The Right One In" for best foreign film???

This was a bad year for movies, but there still were a few gems out there.

I could go on....I'm done bitching now!

419771, i agree though i'm fucking GLAD
Posted by SankofaII, Thu Dec-11-08 11:07 AM
January Jones got a nod for Mad Men..she BEEN giving the dramatics week to week...

but its crazy...even though the globes are, surprisingly, a predictor for the oscars, film are going to be opening up until early january for oscar consideration...

i think these categories will change once studios put that promotional heat behind the films...

like, i'll be angry if rourke isn't in for the wrestler; slumdog millionaire AND rachel gettting married aren't in for screenplay nods, etc.

i dont know....it should be a sorta interesting race. cause, in the tv categories, they give the newbies love, but it always goes to the vets of the categories.

like, sally field or marishka hargitay will take it b/c no one else that's nominated has been consistent, etc.

who knows?
419778, Why the love for Recount on the TV front?
Posted by Marauder21, Thu Dec-11-08 11:27 AM
It really wasn't that good. Not as good as Generation Kill IMO.

Glad to see Franco get the nod. Shit, he might even win with that list.
Disappointed to not see Let The Right One In and The Orphange on the FL list. Two of my favorites this year.
419799, Hands down, The Orphanage should have been

on the list.

fuck that...4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days should been on that list and BOTH actresses should have gotten noticed. i don't care if popped up in a few theatres in 2007/was released in a few NY/LA theatres to drum up interest for it....

most folk saw it in later winter/spring 08 so it should count, imo
420054, The Orphanage wasn't that good imo
Posted by dunk, Thu Dec-11-08 10:30 PM
but from the review Let The right One should be a lock. You never know about the rules tho. A lot of potential winners each yet don't get noms cause they don't meet requirements(many which are ticky tack shit anyway).

*Anyone else notice a majority of these movies haven't even had major releases yet?
*Props for nominated a movie that came out seasons ago, but I don't remember In Bruges being a comedy.
*Pretty disappointed with the acting pool this year, regardless of nominations. There really hasn't been many stand out performances to choose from.
*What the hell is Last Chance Harvey?
*Please oh please oh please don't let RDJ win in blackface.
*Really dropped the ball on foreign films.
*Anyone else think the entire point of the GGs this year is to prove Heath wins for The Joker?

same here.

>*Anyone else remember Woody Allen's latest movie being one of
>his worst? Yeah, THEN HOW THE HELL DID IT GET NOMINATED?

Vick Christina Barcelona is an very great movie. It got much critical praise. This, Cassanova's Dream and Match Point have shown me that Woody is getting some of his old swagger back.

>*Anyone else notice a majority of these movies haven't even
>had major releases yet?

That happens all the time but a almost all of them have gotten screenings & limited releases in L.A. & N.Y. which is all that really matters for them.

>*Props for nominated a movie that came out seasons ago, but I
>don't remember In Bruges being a comedy.

It was a Dark Comedey but definitely one. Vicky Christina Barcelona is really one but it got advertised and pushed
as one since jump street.
>*Pretty disappointed with the acting pool this year,

co-sign. Why do you think RDJ and tom cruise got best supporting nods. *gillie face* This year is weak as fuck compared to '06 &'07.

>*What the hell is Last Chance Harvey?

idk

>*Please oh please oh please don't let RDJ win in blackface.

Come on, homie. You saw the movie so know it isn't really blackface in that regard.

>*Really dropped the ball on foreign films.

they do every year. EVERY YEAR. last year, Perseplos, Diving Bell & the butterfly, Lust, Caution. All the best foreign films got no nods come oscar and gg time.
>*Anyone else think the entire point of the GGs this year is to
>prove Heath wins for The Joker?

people have known that since DK dropped. imo People were waiting for something that would knock him off the top spot but no one has put out a performance like it this year.

Really? I heard nothing but really bland reviews for VCB. His other Scarlet Johannssen films yeah, but everything I had heard about the new one was that the character were flat (with the exception of Bardem and Cruz, who were doing what they could to just not drown on a sinking boat).

>That happens all the time but a almost all of them have gotten
>screenings & limited releases in L.A. & N.Y. which is all that

I know that, but there's usually a higher number of nom'd films already with major releases.

>It was a Dark Comedey but definitely one. Vicky Christina
>Barcelona is really one but it got advertised and pushed

I suppose. Definitely enjoyed In Bruges though. One of those movies that turned out better than it had to be.

>co-sign. Why do you think RDJ and tom cruise got best
>supporting nods. *gillie face* This year is weak as fuck
>compared to '06 &'07.

It was definitely one of those "We're gonna give it to Heath, so lets nominate whatever to round out the list". I can't say the film was worth nominations, but I was impressed with how good Tropic Thunder was - especially the performances. It was definitely the last place I expected Matthew McConaughey to remember how to act.

>Come on, homie. You saw the movie so know it isn't really
>blackface in that regard.

I know it's not blackface in THAT regard, but it is blackface in the "he blackened his face" regard. I'm wary of anyone getting awarded for it. RDJ gets props just for being able to walk that line successfully. Even Olivier didn't get away with it as well as RDJ did. But something to keep in mind - that script doesn't let him get away with it anymore than his performance does. So what's really being awarded? The impression I get is that he got the "dude who has done the most work last year" nomination. You know the actor/director with the most work last year gets nominated just for keeping the industry working. That's why Eastwood had nominations for one good war movie and one boring war movie in the same year. Here's the fear - and listen to how this sounds: "Heath Ledger gave the best acting performance of the year, but lost to an actor playing black." Doesn't sound like the kind of thing you want to hear, and while it probably won't happen - it's now possible.

>they do every year. EVERY YEAR. last year, Perseplos, Diving
>Bell & the butterfly, Lust, Caution. All the best foreign
>films got no nods come oscar and gg time.

So fucking true. Although, I thought by default of rating (NC-17) Lust, Caution couldn't get nominated.

>people have known that since DK dropped. imo People were
>waiting for something that would knock him off the top spot
>but no one has put out a performance like it this year.

Again, 100% true. He really does make that movie a success. A damn shame he won't get to do that again.

419994, How the fuck does Entourage still get nominated for anything?
Posted by DrNO, Thu Dec-11-08 07:00 PM
Kevin Connolly? The guy has the same 3 scenes in every episode.

And Synecdoche, New York getting shut out is retarded (not even a supporting nom for Tom Noonan? RETARDED).

In Treatment and Tru Blood are terrible, so many superior shows out there.

The foreign Hollywood press are awful. Basically journalists that can't hold a serious job in their own country.
420126, Simple. Hollywood's favorite subject is Hollywood.

420118, My issue with the globes and with heath ledger
Posted by SankofaII, Fri Dec-12-08 08:59 AM
is that, they globes are usually "pity" awards for actors who SHOULD have been nominated for other performances, but get a "well, this is our mistake for not nominating you that year" award...

like, we ALL know Heath should have WON for Brokeback Mountain--hands down. To me, his performance as The Joker in Dark Knight only SOLIDIFIED what Brokeback already did--Heath can act his ASS OFF...and he wasn't rewarded for it.

the oscars are the same way....

Cate Blanchett gets nominated every other year cause she's that GOOD. Yet, she wins for a MIMICRY of Katherine Hepburn in The Aviator when everyone KNOWS she should have WON Best Actress for Elizbeth back in 1998, but that went to Gwenyth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love--and we KNOW she wasn't even worthy enough to get it back then...

And so on and so on....

The Globes are bs, but we all know they are bs that basically determines who gets WHAT for Oscars....

so Heath Ledger should win and will win this....but, its clear he's only getting it b/c the hollywood foreign press knows they fucked up for brokeback as did the academy.....

his death only illuminates this fact.
420120, HL = The James Dean Effect
Posted by iboycottedimdb, Fri Dec-12-08 09:15 AM
Golden Globes are the biggest and most obvious of popularity contests that really hold little to no value.

I was always surprised that its still the biggest indicator of Oscars, but Oscar is almost as much of a joke as the GGs.

There's no question that the GG is going to Ledger, and death+superior overlooked performance = awards.

I'm not so sure about the little golden dildo. If HL dosen't win in a competitive category, then he'll definitely get an honorary Oscar like James Dean.

420139, agreed but its still sad that performances
Posted by SankofaII, Fri Dec-12-08 10:35 AM
that ARE worthy get overlooked and we can count to NUMEROUS examples...

denzel washington--malcolm x, hurricane, crimson tide he should have WON for those, but didnt. he wins for training day.

thandie newton--Crash. even IF that movie was wack, her and matt dillon's performances STOOD OUT....she was nominated (rachel weisz won for the constant gardener...i mean, weisz was good but not that good). the BAFTA's (british academy awards) got it right that year...

and so on and so forth....
420164, Okay, 1. You gave me an idea for a new thread. ;0)
Posted by iboycottedimdb, Fri Dec-12-08 12:03 PM
2. Never, ever, ever talk about those overlooked for Oscar, b/c Oscar is not about current*edit* accomplishment as much as popularity, and making up for mofos work in the past (Newman, Pacino, Scorsese, Hitchcock) are primary examples.

SAGs and NYFC are largely considered more accurate reflections of rightful winners, b/c actors can usually identify the best works amongst themselves*, and NY critics are less about the pomp and circumstance.

*Will never understand the Julia Roberts or Renee Zelleweger wins, though.

Independent Spirit Awards
The Gotham Film Awards
British Academy Film and TV Awards (BAFTA)

they choose SOLELY on performance, not on popularity...

these three awards shows are a TRUE barometer of oscar worthy talent, etc.

plus, they support the small, indie films in which actors GIVE them great performances...

I have no doubt that Dame Judes gets the job done. I liked 'Notes', too. But most awards academies have such a hard on for the old British broads, until it just gets dull.

And just b/c Cate Blanchett dresses like Dylan and mimicked an old interview? Pleazze...

DON'T YOU BE DISSIN CATE, MUHFUGGA! LOL!

but, you are right..it's either british broads or wack ass american lasses (reese witherspoon, anyone?)

i mean it seems like that's the trend for the oscars. though, im hearing viola davis is the ONLY ONE who's giving a fierce performance this year in DOUBT...you know that's someone when no one else in the film (streep, hoffman, adams) is getting this much kudos for their work.

and i love viola

Crimson Tide? Really?

I'll give you thandie newton but matt dillon's performance wasn't that good either. Same with Denzel in Crimson Tide.

I meant Courage Under Fire...but, basically, denzel has given performances that were WAY more deserving of a nomination than Training Day.

>Crimson Tide? Really?

Yea, thandie was great. she was the only one who gave a consistently strong and well acted performance in that dreck of a film. I felt matt dillon was good....i'm still not sure if he was oscar worthy, but he got nominted nonetheless. but, in thandie's case, the BAFTAs got it right.

420249, i heard Viola Davis had arguably the best performance in "Doubt"

i keep hearing that she blew away critics and her character in the play won a tony for the actress playing it so im not suprised.
420253, plus Viola Davis ALWAYS gives fine performances
