418121, Straight up character copycats by rival comic companies
Posted by Tiger Woods, Wed Dec-03-08 01:43 PM
(wow, lotta c-words in that subject)

but yo, isn't Moon-Knight Marvel's version of Batman?

And isn't Swamp-Thing just Man-Thing with a human looking head? I mean they even kept the "thing" part.

is this acceptable in comics or something? and those were just two really obvious ones that came to mind right quick, you have any others?

418194, Didn't Marvel have to pay for that?
Posted by Coatesvillain, Wed Dec-03-08 07:04 PM
I remember reading it in a magazine.

I don't know if they paid before introducing the characters or afterwards.
418248, I'm not sure...

In fact, I'm kinda embarrassed that I had to read about it so many years later. As a Legion fan, I should have picked it up.

SHAZAM!

another superman-ish character halted by lawsuit. at least before dc bought all the Fawcett characters.
418179, DC returned the favor - Superboy and Supergirl are ripoffs of
Posted by Nukkapedia, Wed Dec-03-08 06:28 PM
Capt. Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel
418254, actually, superboy came about 3 years earlier than captain marvel jr.
Posted by justin_scott, Thu Dec-04-08 12:03 AM
at least the idea did. superboy was 1st published in '44, captain marvel jr. in '41, BUT superboy was around as an idea jerry seigel had since '38. dc just never liked the idea until robin came out.

you can say supergirl is a knock off of mary marvel, although honestly, it would have happened without mary marvel anyways. just a matter of time before the popularity of "superMAN" would bring about superdog, superboy, supergirl, superwoman, etc.
418265, Otto Binder created both Mary Marvel and Supergirl...so...
Posted by Nukkapedia, Thu Dec-04-08 12:35 AM
....while a "Supergirl" was probably inevitable, DC had the same writer who drummed up Mary Marvel essentially re-create the character 17 years later.

It still counts!
418177, "the punisher" is basically "the executioner"
Posted by justin_scott, Wed Dec-03-08 06:14 PM
the executioner has been around since the 60's in marvel comics.

p.s. as you can tell, both characters are marvel characters. didn't see the rival part of the post.

At least, that's my opinion of him after reading Agent X. So...if Deadpool is a copy of a copy of Taskmaster, I find it pretty impressive that he also manages to be just as awesome.

Fuck it, Deathstroke is the ish too. That fight in Identity Crisis?

418190, Youngblood was originally supposed to be the Teen Titans
Posted by mrhood75, Wed Dec-03-08 06:53 PM
Liefeld oroignally devleoped the costumes, concepts, and storylines for the Teen Titans, and when he formed Image Comics, he just created new characters to fill the roles.
418197, Image was a bunch of rip-offs.

418363, RE: look at the black guy on the left of the bottom 3 pics
Posted by Brother_Afron, Thu Dec-04-08 01:55 PM
That caught my eye too.

Liefield was a damn renaissance man when it came to stealing. He swiped stories, concepts, whole pages of art. People call Greg Land the modern version, but he's going to have to step his swiping game up if you wants to be on Big Rob's level.
418358, LOL. I was trying to remember dude's name for this post
Posted by mrhood75, Thu Dec-04-08 01:45 PM
That wan't Image though. I believe Liefeld did that after he was put on Captain America as part those misbegotten "reboots" that came around post Onslaught. Marvel ended the experienment, but Liefeld decideded to keep the series going on his own line. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
418361, Yup, AWESOME Comics. Great name.

Posted by Gemini_Two_One, Thu Dec-04-08 10:15 AM

418315, i don't see anything remotely resembling "rip-off"
Posted by justin_scott, Thu Dec-04-08 11:22 AM
similarity is even pushing it. they're also both white males with strong chins, but that's just nit picking. hell, even if stan DID think of batman when coming up with iron man, it wouldn't be ripping batman off. EVERY single thing about them is different other than both being smart and good looking. bruce isn't even CLOSE to being the playboy that tony stark is. stark enjoys both lives 50/50. bruce is batman 95% of the time. it's his whole life.
418326, bruce wouldn't have built a suit in that cave.....

418373, This guy sums up how I feel Iron Man came about
Posted by Gemini_Two_One, Thu Dec-04-08 02:27 PM
http://inqdrop.com/index.php?con=viewarticle&act=view&Aid=223

Inside the Marvel executive board room circa 1963

Marvel Exec(ME): Alright dicknoses! Those dumbtards over at DC are killing us! They think they can just take God and slap a cape and a lame S on his chest and turn him into a character! And now they've got that Batman character who's just a normal human being with lots of money and gadgets. I want solutions. NOW!

Lackey #1: How about a billionaire playboy with no real superpowers turned superhero !

ME: That's Batman, you idiot.

Lackey #2: How about if he had a bulletproof suit?

ME: I'm not hating it.

Lackey #2: And he could fly.

ME: I love it. Get a team of writers. I want the first draft of it by Friday.

And that's how I imagine the creation of Iron Man went down. I'm probably wrong, but I've gotten used to that.

While I understand everything you said about Starks enjoying the playboy life and Bruce being Batman 95% of time...I still feel like Lee was thinking about Bruce when he came up Tony Starks

-------------------------------------------------------

My Sig Is a Honor Roll Student at Jackson Middle School
418392, do I smell a spin-off post????????
Posted by Tiger Woods, Thu Dec-04-08 03:46 PM
418504, again, bruce wayne IS NOT a playboy
Posted by justin_scott, Thu Dec-04-08 11:44 PM
only similarity between him and tony stark/iron man is that they are both rich geniuses. that's not enough. i'm not trying to be an asshole, but NO.

P.S.---i just saw the last line in your post. i will say this. i can say that it is ENTIRELY POSSIBLE that stan was thinking of batman in someway. iron man WAS NOT a rip off, BUT maybe it's possible that he was at least somewhat inspired by batman. but there's a HUGE difference in being inspired by, and being ripped off of.
418508, Look
Posted by Gemini_Two_One, Thu Dec-04-08 11:58 PM
I may not discuss comics on the daily like some of you, but my collection and knowledge is just as extensive as many of the COTW regulars. I have hundreds of Batman comics, so I know Bruce is not a playboy and I know that the similarities between Batman and Iron Man are subtle at best....but I also know that I am stubborn and when I was young lad the first time I saw Iron Man I thought he was a poor man's Batman and I will hold on to that thought (right or wrong) as long as I live because I have always found DC to be superior over Marvel and will take any jab at them that I can...even if I have to stretch the truth!

Joey Q - Hey have you guys seen the great new female Wolverine that they put on the X-Men Evolution cartoon? I know how we can milk this thing. We don't want to miss this chance like DC did with Static. Millions of kids are watching her every Saturday, so I say we introduce her into the comics as a prostitute!

Bill Jemas - Marry me, Big J.

Posted by Brother_Afron, Fri Dec-05-08 08:32 AM
the x23s, War Machines, Scarlet Spiders, Thunderstrikes, etc are all spin-off status in my eyes.

Besides if we count x-23 as a rip-off then we have to include Supergirl, Mary Marvel, She-Hulk, Spider Woman, Lady Bullseye and all the other female counterparts of male characters.
419369, she's not a ripoff tho....
Posted by Calico, Tue Dec-09-08 07:32 PM
she's just a female wolverine...the idea is along the same lines as Supergirl/boy, Aqualad, ravager, etc...folks just not used to seeing it at Marvel...is Spidergirl a rip off of Spidey?? they clearly show her and Wolvy are alike, she basically his daughter, but he treats her like his sis...

plus, she dope in X force

They do have a lot in common. Plus Jenkins did bite a big moment in the Miracle Man book for the end of his second Sentry series.

Which reminds me that JMS bit the way Hyperion attacked the army in Supreme Power from Miracle Man, too.
418349, If you look at Black Adamn, they took some Kid Miracleman stuff

418507, and captain marvel bit superman

but of the 3, miracleman (to me) was by far the better character. yes, i just said miracleman is better than superman (personal opinion). obviously, i wouldn't say this if alan moore hadn't written the first 15 issues (15,16...whatever it was).

418386, RE: Doom Patrol - X-Men
Posted by Brother_Afron, Thu Dec-04-08 03:10 PM
I always heard that they debuted too close to each other to have been a bite, then again Stan and Jack were known for how fast they could crank out a comic.
418505, this one is interesting
Posted by justin_scott, Thu Dec-04-08 11:50 PM
because they both debuted the same year, but the similarities are so close (doom patrol even had a character in a wheelchair). it's impossible to tell if either one is a rip off without speaking to the creators (and getting honest answers).
418551, Arnold Drake maintains that Stan ripped him off.
Posted by Orfeo_Negro, Fri Dec-05-08 09:07 AM
Roy Thomas says that Stan didn't read DC comics and the (established) people at DC didn't read Marvel stuff either.

but there were enough creators flitting back and forth between the two companies and hanging out together at bars for ideas to somehow get exchanged nonetheless...
