417643, Anne Hathaway and Maggie Gyllenhal: decade's breakout actresses
Posted by cheapskeight, Mon Dec-01-08 09:48 AM
best of their age. No one is close to them right now but I never sleep on Michelle Williams. I'm waiting and hoping Kerry Washington makes the leap.

But basically them two are ruling into the next decade, easily.
417645, when your performance couldnt live up to Katie Holmes

go watch the secretary if you have trouble sleeping.
417668, never sleep on michelle williams
Posted by SankofaII, Mon Dec-01-08 12:33 PM
and don't forget Zooey Deschanel

Rose Byrne (we need to expand this to non-US actresses also)

i'm still waiting for the right role to come to:

Kerry Washington
Naomie Harris (28 days Later..she a breakout in the making)
Olivia Thirlby

id add actresses who are still there doing it but have lower profiles/do a project every couple years:

Thandie Newton
Lili Taylor
Rachel Weisz

never sleep on her. she solid.

SHE SEES IT! unfortunately that's her only talent.

don't know her

yeah, she needs waaaay more work. she's nice with it.

i dunno. she seem like a potential sex kitten.

love Weisz and Taylor. Thandie needs more challenging work, didn't see W.

Basically everyone is chasing Naomi Watts and Cate Blanchette and of course Tilda.

417705, I LIVES for Tilda! Talk about SLEPT ON!

agreed she can play quirky til the cows come home..but not much else. but she's a character actress and can always go there in indie films/small mainstream roles.
>>
>>Rose Byrne (we need to expand this to non-US actresses also)
>
>don't know her

she's an aussie actress who is sharing screen time with Glenn Close on F/X's Damages...i mean, HOLDS HER OWN with Glenn Close and even upstages her at times.

agree with you on olivia...but, think she'll sideswipe that and have an interesting career.
yea, thandie don't get enough challenging work: CRASH, Beloved (hot mess it was), and her work on ER was interesting...she's best in small, indie films...mainstream films don't really know what to do with her or HOW to place her (educated black british woman who could star opposite a white actor and bring it in a way where you don't even think about her being black, yet and star opposite a terrence howard or a don cheadle and work it in a way where all you DO is notice how black she is, i.e. just a really good actress who somehow manages to convince you to focus on her performance and not her persay...she was great in Rocknrolla.

OOH..don't forget N'bushe Wright, Aunjanue Ellis, Tracee Ellis Ross, Nicole Ari Parker, Regina Hall, etc.

they don't get enough work and should....

>Basically everyone is chasing Naomi Watts and Cate Blanchette
>and of course Tilda.
>>

Kate Winslet COMES for Naomi Watts on the regular...but, i agree. no one fucks with Cate Blanchett on ANY day...
417708, I forgot all about Winslet. she's been a beast for 10 years. she's
Posted by cheapskeight, Mon Dec-01-08 02:13 PM
still not that old either
417713, she started when she was a teen
Posted by SankofaII, Mon Dec-01-08 02:27 PM
and did Heavenly Creatures in 1994...

i can't get over the fact that we're the exact same age and born a day apart (i'm older)

she's amazing and really IS about the work, not the fame and paycheck.

and you GOTTA love a woman who likes being thick and calls the media out for saying she's anything BUT.
417673, I loooooooove me some Zooey but she needs a better agent
Posted by jigga, Mon Dec-01-08 01:00 PM
Same with Rose Byrne.
417714, Rose has been KILLING IT on F/X's Damages
Posted by SankofaII, Mon Dec-01-08 02:28 PM
opposite glenn close?

she holds her own and upstages glenn on occasion...

im chomping at the bit for season 2 to start in january!
417718, She was really good in Troy & Sunshine. I haven't seen Damages.
Posted by jigga, Mon Dec-01-08 02:39 PM
And I cant recall if she got off'd in 28 Weeks Later
417732, she got offed in 28 Weeks Later and Damages is a must
Posted by SankofaII, Mon Dec-01-08 03:16 PM
get thee to netflix and rent season 1. thank me later.
417696, Call me when Anne Hathaway doesn't get upstaged
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Dec-01-08 01:47 PM
Emily Blunt killed it in Devil Wears Prada and Rosemarie DeWitt owned Rachel Getting Married.

As for better actresses, give me Amy Adams, Rachel McAdams, Natalie Portman, Evan Rachel Wood, Keira Knightley, Penelope Cruz, among others.
417702, they complimented each other in RGM
Posted by cheapskeight, Mon Dec-01-08 02:05 PM
>Emily Blunt killed it in Devil Wears Prada
If you're talking about the other assistant, no. she had to be a bama then a diva and back to a bama, harder to do.

and Rosemarie
>DeWitt owned Rachel Getting Married.
addressed

>As for better actresses, give me Amy Adams
she's good. I just want to see more. I need to see the Ms Pettigrew movie

Rachel McAdams,

2 words, The Notebook. end of story. she kinda been off the scene for the last couple years and isn't in that class any more, imo. I'm thinking of women that have a legit shot at the Julia Roberts crown. She had a chance and right now I think only Hathaway is in the running

>Natalie Portman
pre-puberty? yes.

Evan Rachel Wood
no

Keira Knightley
uhhhh

Penelope Cruz

en espanol? si.

I always hoped to see more of Alison Lohman but I'd be happy if she just had a Jennifer Jason Leigh career.
417715, See The Wrestler before you start sleepin on ERW

>I always hoped to see more of Alison Lohman but I'd be happy
>if she just had a Jennifer Jason Leigh career.

Lohman really let me down after Matchstick Men. I loved her in that but she's had some shiddy roles since then.
417747, Julia? Hathaway isn't even in Reese's zip code.
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Dec-01-08 03:50 PM
Hathaway is good but she is by no means heads and shoulders above most of the young actresses of her generation.

And I'm not sure why you dismiss Keira Knightley. She needs to get out of the corsets but I can't blame her for choosing period pieces over Bride Wars and Passengers.

Evan Rachel Wood is crazy but she's as good of an actress as Hathaway. Penelope Cruz is better in two languages.

417704, so what if she does? what's that have to do with anything?
Posted by Basaglia, Mon Dec-01-08 02:10 PM
417741, Best actress of her generation isn't best actress in her movies
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Dec-01-08 03:44 PM
And people of her generation are the ones blowing her away.

Hathaway is a great actress but there's no way she's in a class all her own.
417749, dude, that just means she's been in good ass movies
Posted by Basaglia, Mon Dec-01-08 03:55 PM
emily blunt is a very talented actress. plus, she was in there with meryl.

EVERYONE in rachel was good, so that's nonsense. and the scene with her and winger is by far the most powerful and she more than held her own there.

any BS about her being upstaged is hate, IMO.

417752, Hating the hype, not Hathaway
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Dec-01-08 03:58 PM
Bringing ridiculous hype down a notch. Emily Blunt is just as good an actress as Anne Hathaway. Acting like Hathaway is somehow the undisputed queen of her generation is just wrong.

I like Anne Hathaway but let's get some perspective here.
417754, so you think Blunt is the queen or is about to be? be real 4 a minute.
Posted by cheapskeight, Mon Dec-01-08 04:02 PM
417757, Don't front on Blunt
Posted by jigga, Mon Dec-01-08 04:12 PM
417761, I'm saying anyone has a chance.
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Dec-01-08 04:29 PM
I doubt Blount makes it but there are COUNTLESS actresses who could leapfrog Hathaway. To act like she has the next decade on lock is ridiculous.

Twenty years ago, Julia Roberts was supporting Justine Bateman and just getting noticed in Mystic Pizza.

Ten years ago, Reese Witherspoon was the girl from Pleasantville, Fear, and Freeway. Kirsten Dunst had the Aughts on lock. The American Beauty/American Pie crowd was going to rule the 2000's.

Hathaway is talented but there's a 19 year old girl in her first or second movie right now who'll probably be the big star of the coming decade.
417755, the path you went down just to disagree was uncalled for
Posted by Basaglia, Mon Dec-01-08 04:02 PM
i don't agree either, but i know hathaway is really good and has a great future
417765, Am I the pot or the kettle?

417753, the post is about breakout actresses = talent + blowupability
Posted by cheapskeight, Mon Dec-01-08 03:59 PM
and for that, I am accurate. Julia Roberts managed to breakout even though she was rarely the best talent on the screen. But yes, i happen to think AH is a good actress who has the chance to be a legit draw. And she's more worthy of the shot than others that have been given it (Kate Hudson, I see you).

Also Rosemarie DeWitt is almost 10 years older and ain't blown up yet, why do you think she would now (no knock on her talent but cmon)? I mean maybe at a Patricia Clarkson level or Hope Davis. But she'll never see AH, the same AH that held her own against The Streep? YEP.

And people of her generation are the ones blowing her away.
>
>Hathaway is a great actress but there's no way she's in a
>class all her own.
417758, How are you accurate?
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Dec-01-08 04:17 PM
You basically pulled two names out of your ass and claimed they were going to blow up. Maggie Gyllenhall? I'm not even sure she wants to be Julia.

Also, you dismiss other people like Keira Knightley even though she's had box office success, an oscar nom and two Golden Globe noms? She has just as much chance to blow up as Anne. She needs to get out of the corsets to do it but it's not like Bride Wars and Passengers is really helping Anne claim the crown.

You could as easily say Kristin Stewart or Emma Roberts.

Hathaway has a chance but she is in the same boat as almost all of the young actresses who seem to be on the brink.
417717, Cmon. Taraji P. Henson slaughters both of em.
Posted by jigga, Mon Dec-01-08 02:34 PM
417730, no she don't
Posted by SankofaII, Mon Dec-01-08 03:15 PM
taraji is good and slays many actresses, but she's not fucking with maggie at all...

anne, on the other hand, she kills.

im predicting oscar buzz and nominations for taraji in benjamin button...and i have a feeling she could take it if the rumors i hear about her performance (hands down, more than on par with blanchett, swinton and pitt, etc.) are true.
417745, i hope you're right but i doubt she'll ever get mainstream leads
Posted by cheapskeight, Mon Dec-01-08 03:50 PM
let's be real off them previews, she's playing a mammy :/

and though she looks fantastic she is near 40

and if she can overcome that she still has to compete with Halle, Latifah, occasionally Jada and Thandie for those over 30 mainstream roles or try and elbow out Meagan Goode and co. at the other end.

And I haven't even mentioned that that Kerry Washington is always lurking for the same roles. And what about Nona Gaye?

now that I think about it, Taraji is a great actress but she's pretty type-casted. i can't even think of a mainstream movie she's done or a role she's played that wasn't kinda hood.
417756, Maggie damn near broke my heart in Sherry Baby....
Posted by jonpitt, Mon Dec-01-08 04:12 PM
...i was genuinely moved by her performance; she was awesome. Secretary was great and i like her supporting roles in World Trade and Stranger than Fiction too...she comes across well everytime i've seen her.

Anne Hathaway is good fun and she is probably one of the most beautiful actresses of our generation. Zooey Deschanel is adorable too and her album rocks.

417815, i luh me some maggie...
Posted by roamr1, Mon Dec-01-08 07:44 PM
she was really good in stranger than fiction. she was (as mentioned above) heartbreakingly good in sherry baby. and i thought she pulled something off in batman that none of the other bat ladies have...she played a role much more than a hot chick, but one you had sympathy for. very important leading up to the last few scenes.

i know she was in happy endings too...a movie i know i liked but can't really remember the characters.
417844, Anne Hathaway is terrible
Posted by AZ, Mon Dec-01-08 11:34 PM
has she ever had a role where she didn't over-act? she takes herself way too seriously to be a good actress.

418153, she's a good actress making the most of out niche casting
