417509, Comicheads: Explain Gambit's appeal to me Posted by AnonymousCoward, Sun Nov-30-08 09:44 AM
I know Gambit is a fan favorite, but I never got the appeal? What is is about that character that have earned him such devotion and adoration?

417546, this is like saying why is a player good with girls Posted by Darryl_Licke, Sun Nov-30-08 05:39 PM
Dude had a natural charm when he first showed up. Some said that was also part of his mutant ability but his whole concept is just ill.

417558, he's got swag and he throws cards Posted by Tiger Woods, Sun Nov-30-08 07:26 PM
he was always laying it on thick with Rogue, he had some sort of accent, and he threw cards that blew up. As a young buck, I thought dude was as cool as it got, and he ranked personally only second to Wolverine.
|
417560, he was cool in the 90s Posted by carlos, Sun Nov-30-08 07:29 PM
seriously, UXM #350 is one of my fav comics ever, but after that, his character lost all appeal to me.
|
417561, By now, any appeal he had has evaporated Posted by mrhood75, Sun Nov-30-08 07:32 PM
Dude is now C or even D-level X-character status.
But when he first was created, he was a new character with a cool power, a cool-looking design/costume, and a "mysterious" past they could hint at but refused to reveal over the span of hundreds of issues.. It was like Chris Claremont's attempt to create another Wolverine, with ultimately less staying power.

417569, I guess I just never thought his power was all that cool. Posted by AnonymousCoward, Sun Nov-30-08 08:53 PM

417571, RE: I guess I just never thought his power was all that cool. Posted by Brother_Afron, Sun Nov-30-08 08:57 PM
His power, in and of itself, wasn't cool. The visuals that it lead to were. In his first appearances, he'd hold a lock pick, his eyes would shoot energy that traveled up his arm to charge it, then he'd throw it.
|
417577, His episode in the new X-Toon was the weakess one IMHO Posted by CaptNish, Sun Nov-30-08 09:07 PM

417585, idk about everyone else.... Posted by apathetic, Sun Nov-30-08 10:02 PM
it was his mutant power that always drew me to him, similar to Colossus and Nightcrawler.
I mean, exploding cards? come on now. The 12 year old me loved that shit!

It was the limitless modifications and possibilities that a power like kinetic energy could mean.
Plus he was kinda like a pirate crossed with a ninga. That's dope! _______________________________________ <--- Everett Thomas A.K.A. Synch

417616, He was cool. And his romance with Rogue was awesome. Posted by SepiaSylph, Mon Dec-01-08 01:56 AM
He had cool enough powers. The "devil eyes" and bo staff and the increased speed and agility. He's a cool guy.
And come on. Remy/Rogue is fantastic.
But true, he did stop being cool after the 90s.
|
417623, I wonder if Gambit is a racist. Posted by Doc Maestro, Mon Dec-01-08 04:25 AM
or if a mutant, persecuted and such, could even be racist?
its tons of racist gay people tho.

417697, He's the personification of "Cool in the 90's" Posted by KneelB4Me, Mon Dec-01-08 01:48 PM
Even Cable was able to make a transition into the new millineum (sp). Maybe it's the jacket that restricts him.
Edit: Watch the blog in a few days, I want to expand on this.

418031, ...agreed, i always thought he was truly overrated. Posted by Calico, Tue Dec-02-08 10:58 PM
the only thing about him that was cool was that he could ALWAYS find a way into Rogue's bed...he was always effin up tho...

417840, I loved Gambit in the 90s Posted by K. Dot, Mon Dec-01-08 11:19 PM
He was one of my favorite X-Men characters back then next to Wolverine. He had the mysterious past, cool red eyes, the accent, the kinetic card power etc. He personified cool back then but now? I guess that coolness couldn't last forever...

The X-Men had a girl shooting off firecrackers & a worthless slug.
The Hulk carried big guns.
Superman had a mullet.
All on scratch-n-sniff foil covers.

418090, interesting notes Posted by forte, Wed Dec-03-08 11:48 AM
Gambit's body, as a living generator of bio-kinetic energies, possesses physiological attributes adapted for constant motion. As a result, his mutation has increased his body's innate physical qualities ( such as speed, reflexes/reactions, stamina, agility, flexibility, dexterity and balance) to the very limit of natural human capability. This also creates static interference around him at all times making him immune to telepathic probes, and at the peak of his powers, this grew to become a constant ambient bio-kinetic aura around his body which neutralized all other mutant powers which involved direct physical contact upon his person, allowing him to make direct skin contact at last with Rogue, enabling them to finally physically consummate their romantic relationship.

418105, and there you have it Posted by buckshot defunct, Wed Dec-03-08 12:51 PM
A) Sweet ass trenchcoat B) Sweet ass headgear C) Boned Rogue
If that's not cool, then I don't want to be cool either.
