443078, Haven't seen Waiting but I liked it better than Superbad
Posted by jigga, Thu Mar-26-09 05:36 PM
Jesse Eisenberg never disappoints & even carries a dull Kristen Stewart through this. What's the deal with Kristen Stewart anyways? I gave her a pass for being dull in Panic Room since she was young & diabetic & helped balance out Joide Foster's character but yeesh! She's like Scar Jo w/o the dsl's & fun baggage. Not a good combo. But I digress.

I was expecting Bill Hader & Kristen Wiig to have much more screen time but the movie still succeeds with a great supporting performance by Mahtin Stah (much better here than he was in Knocked Up), an understated role by Ryan Reynolds & Margarita Levieva who puts all them broke batches in Superbad yall were raving over to shame.

Solid script, soundtrack & cinematography. I'll be interested to see what this director does with Pegg & Frost in his next flick.
444277, In defense of Stewart...

She gave a great understated performance but this film desperately needed someone to add some life and charisma to the film. It needed a big personality, not an actress.

This is the kind of film that critics eat up because of the soundtrack/cinematography/and understated nature. They'll gladly overlook that the story itself is lousy, the characters thin, and the relationships are completely hollow (and honestly, a little creepy). On the bright side, it was better than Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist.

444276, More like Elizabethtown meets One Crazy Summer

And I don't mean that in a good way. This film is a romance. It's has some funny parts but I wouldn't call it a "comedy". First off, the editing killed some of the gags and it just wasn't really that funny overall.

An hour and fifty-five minutes DRAGGED. It's a poor little rich (and used to be rich) kid movie in which you're supposed to like the main characters because they are the main characters. And they fall in love... because they are the main characters.

Full review on the Soulhonky blog but unless you LOVE 80's teen romances and just wish they'd get rid of the contrived plot or if you thought Elizabethtown was good, I'd say skip this movie.
444280, damn, it's THAT kind of movie?
Posted by dunk, Fri Apr-03-09 08:47 PM
that's the exact type of movie is despise (even tho i enjoyed Elizabethtown)

ill catch it for cheap at a drive thru or something
444326, Yeah, I kinda figured it was going to be nothing like Superbad or Apatow

444284, Don't see Adventureland. It's rental material and not much more.

Surprisingly mediocre for a Judd Apatow joint. The main character is even more wimpy and impotent than Michael Cera in his usual typecasting. The comedy was spread out among the shiftless cast and droning "character development", but there wasn't enough of it. Shoot, a couple small cuts here and there and this could've easily been PG-13.

Much too tame w/ a moronic lead and wasted talent in Ryan Renolds and Bill Hader.

Posted by gusto, Thu Apr-23-09 01:27 AM
im glad this wasnt michael cera. needed a slightly more serious tone.
i think this is what i was expecting nick and nora to be (which i liked also)
448427, i was very surprised by this movie
Posted by ScandalousWoman, Mon Apr-27-09 05:32 PM
and i liked it a lot.

i assumed jesse eisenberg would be the latest michael cera: awkward, nerdy, lovingly condescending, and i wasn't far off the mark.

Kristen Stewart made it all work for me. also my favorite Bill Hader role in a feature film.
484932, Pitch Perfect

I really enjoyed it...the film had this great tone of youthful melancholy and confusion w/o coming off bitchy, syrupy, or hackneyed.

Ryan = good enough as the jaded philanderer that feasts upon naive young women
Jesse = he does a great awkward, smart, fish out of water youth
Martin Starr = interesting "too smart and quirky" to be truly appreciated by anyone dude
Hader & Wiig = when she tossed him the bat and bill didn't even break stride to catch it before he left the trailer to confront the raging maniac? That was worth the price of admission alone

ole girl and her friend doing the dance routines? funny ish, good movie
485027, Better than The Wackness, gotdamn

And I'm with jigga in that I can't figure out what Kristen Stewart was supposed to be doing here... her performance lingered somewhere between "sonambulant" and "heroin-addled"... I understand that the character's a bit on the fucked-up side, but... I dunno... Stewart just didn't come off that well to me... and I told y'all to quit shittin' on Ryan Reynolds...

... anyway, I thought this was less a plot-driven coming-of-age tale than a slice-of-life story...

As someone who's had frustrating experiences with the opposite sex at that similar age, it was very easy to relate to the main character. The ending was sweet.
