415453, Which Movie Was the Weak Link in the Die Hard series????
Posted by WarriorPoet415, Wed Dec-31-69 07:00 PM
I always initially thought the third one was the weakest.

I mean, let's look at it: it broke the isolated locale one man against many that the first two had. The whole Simon says thing was fairly silly.

But it looks like according to a few sites that Die Hard 2 is the lowest rated. Now I have a clear bias as Die Hard 2 was in theaters when I was a teenage movie theater usher (I got to see it free over and over again) and it was the first official movie I owned (suncoast, bitches) and I watched it over and over again. I mean the joint had John Amos!

However, now in 2008, while I still think Die Hard series is still the most ass-kickin' action franchise ever, I gotta ask myself, which one is the weak link, cause my view towards DHWAV definitely improved over time. I'll still include all the movies so that the assorted yahoos can vote...

Which one's the weakest and why?

Die Hard
Die Hard 3
Die Hard 2
Watching dog sh*t crust over in the hot sun
Live Free or Die Hard

Die Hard 1 is the GOAT action movie. So of course that's number 1.

Die Hard With A Vengeance is a very underrated classic. Admittedly, I didn't like it when I saw it in the theatres. I thought it was alright. But when I caught it again on HBO the next year, I learned to appreciate its genius. And I watch it again, and again when they show it on TV.

Die Hard 2 was a worthy sequel. I really enjoyed it a lot. I mean, it had James Evans Senior up in there! And the twist of him being a bad guy through me.

Live Free was some effin' trash. I hate this movie with a passion. It was so dumb and NOT Die Hard. If you asked me, "16 Blocks" would have been a better Die Hard than this smut. I really think they could have reworked the "16 Blocks" script to make it a John McClane Die Hard flick.

416092, Nah

I kind of got the feeling that after Mclain had been through everything he had, he got a kick out of everything in the 4th one. I think it was a nod to the audience, that after all the ridiculous shit that had happened to him, he himself knew that he'd be alright, and he was having fun. I kind of liked his attitude in the 4th one.

Die Harder was the weakest link, primarily because he spent most of his time bickering with the cops. They'd throw in a few bad guys on the ground for him to fend off but the movie didn't work.

I also agree that 16 Blocks could have made for a GREAT Die Hard movie. Switching it so he's fighting against cops and protecting a criminal.

I'd rank 'em:
Die Hard
Live Free or Die Hard
Die Hard with a Vengeance
16 Blocks
Die Harder
415745, you too with LFoDH at #2? we must have seen different movies
Posted by Matinho, Thu Nov-20-08 04:35 PM
415752, I don't know what's wrong with these people
Posted by nipsey, Thu Nov-20-08 04:56 PM
LFODH was straight up trash! Like that movie was horrible. I don't see how people can even consider that as the second best of the series.

415782, I heard the complaints and went in expecting a superhero movie
Posted by SoulHonky, Thu Nov-20-08 05:53 PM
So I loved it. If you expected anything even remotely realistic, I could see why you wouldn't have liked it.
415788, and it's not like 3 was super realistic anyway...
Posted by will_5198, Thu Nov-20-08 05:59 PM
415791, True. But LFoDH was extra.
Posted by SoulHonky, Thu Nov-20-08 06:11 PM
If I hadn't gone into the film expecting that, I might have been bullshit about it too.
415747, The last one is borderline UNWATCHABLE
Posted by Wordman, Thu Nov-20-08 04:40 PM
At least the second one is tolerable.
And before you ask - the third one's the best.

415960, How the fuck do you come up with the third one being the best???

even over the OG?????

415961, Not a classic, but a damn good ride. Worthy entry in the series....

415783, Die Harder, due to the lack of good supporting characters.
Posted by Ryan M, Thu Nov-20-08 05:53 PM
Think about it - EVERY other Die Hard has solid, entertaining, and/or sympathetic supporting characters. Die Hard 2 doesn't. That's why it sucks...or, actually...it's one of many reasons, but it does, in fact, suck.
415784, Good call.
Posted by SoulHonky, Thu Nov-20-08 05:55 PM
The main bad guy had zero personality. Rickman, Irons and even Olyphant blow that guy out of the water.
416021, Olyphant was terrible. He sat on his ass the whole movie.
Posted by jigga, Fri Nov-21-08 04:38 PM
At least the other guys actually got involved & did some dirty work
416023, Die Hard villains all spent 80% of the movie talking on a walkie.
Posted by SoulHonky, Fri Nov-21-08 05:07 PM
- The guy in 2 didn't do shit. Oh, he did shoot off a lot of blanks at John Amos.
- Jeremy Irons had a little more to do but wasn't all that busy.
- Rickman's shining moment was when he got to show off his American accent.

And Maggie Q and the dude who jumped all over the place were the best henchman out of any of the sequels.
416025, Fair enough. But the whole, "And with this push of a button..." shit
Posted by jigga, Fri Nov-21-08 05:22 PM
was worn the fuck out in LFODH.

Yes the blanks were corny in 2 but I still liked the airport stuff.

416028, True.
Posted by SoulHonky, Fri Nov-21-08 05:41 PM
The movie is far from perfect and is joyfully stupid but I thought it was ridiculously entertaining.

And at least the silly stuff was more fun than scenes like the ejector seat in 2.
417784, He was kicking ass, though!!
Posted by AlteredProgression, Mon Dec-01-08 06:21 PM
The last one is the weak link because John McClain not cursing everyone out through out the movie is blasphemy!!
416006, Gotta be DH2DH
Posted by spenzalii, Fri Nov-21-08 02:53 PM
As mentioned, the original still has to be the GOAT action flick, hands down. I can still watch this one on a drop of a dime. For teh life of me I never understood the hate DHWAV got. I thought it rocked, and it did get better with age. So he was going all across NYC. That movie was badass. GRODT, err, LFODT wasn't great, but it wasn't nearly as bad as many people make it to be. Summer movie of the year? Not a chance. Entertaining? Yes. If it wasn't part of the DH franchise, it would have fared much better.

But DH2 just seemed like a straight port of DH at Dulles. Same setup, same cop (what's the chances of that?) boring ass villain...at best it was too cliche, at worse it just wasn't good.
416019, DH 2 also has the most unnecessary male ass/nudity in film history
Posted by Matinho, Fri Nov-21-08 04:26 PM
(imo at least) with that ridiculous martial arts bullshit at the beginning

I don't know if that should be another detractor/reason for why the movie sucks so bad or if it should be looked at as impressive considering how much unnecessary male ass/nudity there has been in history

aka your action movie status is questionable right now.
416056, When Will, SoulHonky, and I ALL agree, you know it's legit.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Nov-21-08 08:28 PM
LFODH is indeed second best. And Die Harder is the weak link.
417707, T3 > DH4
Posted by go mack, Mon Dec-01-08 02:13 PM
but not by much. I enjoyed both films for what they were, big budget action movies. Both are the weakest in the series.
417786, Cmon yo. This should be a no-brainer.
Posted by ZooTown74, Mon Dec-01-08 06:56 PM
The gasoline vapor trail of death? The James Evans Heel Turn? The self-referential-John-McClane-how'd-I-get-myself-into-mo-shit monologue?

Any answer other than Die Hard 2: Die Harder is a waste of a vote.
