>Jaden Smith set for 'Karate Kid' redo

Columbia taps Chris Murphy to write script
By MICHAEL FLEMING

Columbia Pictures is back in the dojo with a new version of the 1984 hit "The Karate Kid," which has been refashioned as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith.

The film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. Will Smith, who is the 10-year-old actor's father, co-starred alongside Jaden in his feature debut, "The Pursuit of Happyness," which Overbrook and Escape Artists produced for Columbia.

The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.

China Film Group Corp. will co-produce in China.

The younger Smith, who next stars in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," is a martial arts practitioner.

Columbia presidents Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach said they had been trying to find a way to bring back the series, which began with three films that featured Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. A subsequent film launched the career of Hilary Swank.

They're usually either pretty good, or easy to ignore.

But this one... is neither. And slowly but surely, I'm feeling pissed about it.

possibly but with CGI you don't see the wires
413425, This really doesn't sound like a remake at all
Posted by Call It Anything, Tue Nov-11-08 06:36 PM
He's a 10 year old kid in China who get bullied and learns karate from an older guy. I think they're just attaching the name to stir up publicity. This sounds about as similar as any other movie involving karate. Might as well be a Sidekicks remake.
413316, WTH. Hollywood just gave me another remake to be mad about.

out there that could be remade. Not worth gettin pissed about this one.
413376, The bigger issue is the first time writer IMO
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue Nov-11-08 03:06 PM
Not sure what the problem with Jaden is. I mean, they already killed the franchise with The Next Karate Kid so it's not like he's walking onto hallowed grounds here.

But hiring a guy who never wrote a film before and is the video assist guy seems odd. Just shows you that if you hang around people in charge and make a good impression, you can get a gig.
413410, Casting Jaden turns it into a cute kids movie
Posted by mrhood75, Tue Nov-11-08 05:55 PM
And that speaks to the fact he's not even a teenager, rather than his acting ability. Making this movie with a pre-teen removes whatever "edge" the original might have had and turns it into "3 Ninjas," as mentioned above.
413412, If I remember correctly it NEVER had an edge.
Posted by spades, Tue Nov-11-08 05:57 PM
413413, you're worried that he'll lack the grit and grime of Ralph Macchio?
Posted by buckshot defunct, Tue Nov-11-08 06:03 PM

413420, Next thing you know, people will complain if its PG
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue Nov-11-08 06:21 PM
You can make almost the exact same movie with Jaden. And it might make more sense with a younger kid dealing with anger issues and people actually caring about a karate competition.

They tried to make a modern Karate Kid for high schoolers (Never Back Down) and that shit barely made its production budget back.
413424, It didn't say the shit was the WIld Bunch, but do you think....
Posted by mrhood75, Tue Nov-11-08 06:35 PM
...a movie starring a cute 10-year-old turns this into a cartoon, whereas the original made an effort to make all the characters semi-interesting.
413429, Why can't they make Jaden's character semi-interesting?
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue Nov-11-08 06:50 PM
>...a movie starring a cute 10-year-old turns this into a
>cartoon, whereas the original made an effort to make all the
>characters semi-interesting.

I don't agree with the premise that casting a ten year old means the film has to be cartoonish and can't be interesting.
413433, Can you tell me the last kid's-centered action movie where...
Posted by mrhood75, Tue Nov-11-08 06:54 PM
...any kid character (or even adult) was actually interesting? 'Cause I'm not thinking of any in the last decade or so.
413445, That's why you remake a movie from the 80's
Posted by SoulHonky, Tue Nov-11-08 07:26 PM
Back when kid's action movies were actual quality. It's been a while but I think they have a shot at doing a good job with Karate Kid.

Then again, this is why I question having a first time writer do it. You can make a quality kid actioner with Jaden. Whether the producers pull it off is a different question.

I'm just not going to go crazy a) over a cheesy film being a different kind of cheese or b) dismissing any hopes of the film being good because Jaden is cast in it.
413436, man, bottom line -- Karate Kid is only really great in context
Posted by celery77, Tue Nov-11-08 07:04 PM
remove it from the 1980s, the karate fad, remove it from an era where putting a Japanese vet on-screen was really, truly, ground-breaking, and having a hispanic character fall in love with Elizabeth Shue was just something we'd never seen before.

THEN

remove it from the cringe-worthy Cobra Kai, and all the bad cliches, and cheesy, over-baked emotionally manipulative '80s rock score, and at the same moment putting Miyagi on-screen and then having him, in the climactic scene, reach back to some mumbo-jumbo Other-esque Japanese voodooism or whatever it is he does.

Maaaaaan...

Sure -- it's a great, heart-warming, widely appealing story that underpins it, but the elements which make the original GREAT are truly dependent on the 1980s context. In particular making Miyagi, the fucking GROUNDBREAKING character, a central part of the film.

I was close with a Japanese-American WWII vet growing up, who got taken out of the service and put into internment camps, and man ... unless they really break some ground on the new Miyagi like that, this shit is going to be trash.
413839, To my knowledge Ralph Machhio/Dan LeRuso are Italian

in Hollywood

These productions are considered as properties by the big conglomerates that own them

As such, they are considered assets that can be exploited, with the hope that they make enough bread that they corporations can churn out sequel after sequel, because they aren't concerned about creativity, or a lack thereof, they're concerned about getting a nice return on their investment

It sucks, and I wholeheartedly agree that it sucks, but this is the way the game is as of now... at least on the major studio side...
