405893, The Anime Post XVII Posted by KwesiAkoKennedy, Thu Oct-02-08 11:32 PM
The we don't need no stinkin' Toonami edition...
The guilty pleasures of the summer season, Macross F and Code Geass came to a resounding conclusion and didn't disappoint in the least bit if you don't take either too seriously.
Hopefully the Doc stuck with Ryoko's Case Files because it was a rather fun trip. Once again, not too serious but a refreshing change from preteens saving the universe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sji8npyJzSE
Things to look forward to for the fall include...
While I haven't seen it yet, Casshern Sins seems to have gotten off to a good start yesterday. http://www.casshern-sins.jp/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2YoJkfrWsc
On sunday we get thrown right back into the AD Century of Gundam 00 and the continuation of the events of season 1. Hopefully that wont fall on it's face since there are quite a few dangling plots and conflicts that need to be resolved. http://www.gundam00.net/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTlbPmoge-Q
For those that got a kick out of Tokyo Majin Gakuen Gehoucho or Tenpu Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi, this may be up you alley. Ga-Rei-zero http://www.ga-rei.jp/top.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lSQQpSAq9A
And while I can't find any images from it, it seems the reason why Madhouse was too busy to make Blade of the Immortal a great as it should have been is because they were too busy working on an adaptation of this... KUROZUKA http://celestialkitsune.wordpress.com/2008/09/30/kurozuka-anime-based-on-a-love-story-lasting-1000-years-augmented-by-vampires-rocket-propelled-swords-and-jesus/ http://www.madhouse.co.jp/works/2008-2007/works_tv_kurozuka.html
Also by Madhouse, a mystery series about a serial killer and the unlikely group of investigators assembled to find him... Mouryou no Hako (Box of Goblins) http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10153 http://www.ntv.co.jp/mouryou/
If you're in the mood for dramatic sprawling space opera and politics there's this... Tytania http://www.tytania.jp/ http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10111
And, if I do say so myself, one of the more enjoyable quirky fish out of water music prodigy comedies to come around gets a second season... http://www.nodame-anime.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNONYztSsNA
And rounding up the group is the latest offering from the people that gave us Samurai Champloo... http://www.michikotohatchin.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTXpF96cEN0
There's plenty more like a Fist of the North Star series from the perspective of the bad guy. But, like most of the new North Star material of late, it looks really sub par. Take a look, see what grabs your attention, post it up...

Man, I ain't gonna lie, that shit just made me frustrated.
I couldn't watch after episode 3, it was so poorly animated.

405936, Ryoko's Case File is excellent... it's a fun trip indeed. Posted by Dr Claw, Fri Oct-03-08 08:50 AM
The Doc also went down Retroville and checked out the 2nd collection of GoLion. A lot of these episodes are kind of funny from a nostalgia point, but DAMN... Sincline is a true asshole among assholes.

406351, Downloading gundam 00 now Posted by Olu, Mon Oct-06-08 07:16 AM
I hope its as good as the first season.
It showed up at a good time too, I was just wondering what would replace Macross Frontier

406388, The first ep. gets to business from jump... Posted by KwesiAkoKennedy, Mon Oct-06-08 11:19 AM
They aren't playing around this time. The action and main story gets moving from jump.
While the first season played off as a rather well done redux of Gundam Wing, this season is heavily playing off of the plot points of Gundam Zeta. Hopefully they'll continue to spin it in their own unique direction like the first season.
|
407133, I've never seen Gundam Zeta Posted by Olu, Fri Oct-10-08 10:30 AM
summary? links?
I like the way they dived right in and reintroduced a ton of characters on the first episode though. No time wasting

407044, Kashern and Kurozuka are both off to a decent start... Posted by KwesiAkoKennedy, Thu Oct-09-08 07:18 PM
Kashern is MUCH darker than I thought it would be but at the same time keeps that Tatsunoko old school feel.
Kurouka is right up the alley for anyone that is...
a. Still sore over Blade of the Immortal. b. Feinding for something along the lines of Otogizōshi. C. Just want to see some fools get cut the fuck up.

407096, I can't find the 'zuka... Posted by Auk_The_Blind, Fri Oct-10-08 01:12 AM

Sounds dope from reviews though.

You should be able to find a stream of it through OVGuide.
|
407124, Casshern is kinda 'meh' Posted by Auk_The_Blind, Fri Oct-10-08 10:00 AM
I dig the apocalyptic vibe and old-school visual aesthetic, but I really hate how washed out and dark must of this new semi-digital animation is. The limited color-scheme works for rendering apocalyptic landscapes but fails at making them visually stimulating.

407073, Michiko to Hachin supporters: Check out Soil & "Pimp" Sessions Posted by hardware, Thu Oct-09-08 09:38 PM
if you haven't already. Shinichiro Wantanabe has selected more ill ass artists to do music for his shows (i think). http://michikotohatchin.com/link/
http://www.jvcmusic.co.jp/soilpimp/eng/index_eng.html
i saw them linked to the site so i assume they have a hand in the soundtrack. They're a really cool (and commercially successful) jazz band

408303, Got all the albums. They are fantastic. Posted by SepiaSylph, Fri Oct-17-08 12:03 AM
I really want this anime to be so good. omg.
Can it be as good as Cowboy Bebop? Well, no, 'cause nothing is. But it can be close like Samurai Champloo was. Man, I'm geeked!
|
408318, i think it's gonna be better than Champloo Posted by hardware, Fri Oct-17-08 12:36 AM
Wantanabe is just producing and directing the music so his hand isn't too into this one
from what i can tell the animation is the over-the-top type which i'm SO GEEKED about. think Gainax x Lupin III
this one looks like its gonna be in my top 10. i really, REALLY hope this shit is good to the last drop.
i hope the dubs are good too. i wish they'd get some new voice actors for anime. i really hate hearing recognizable voices.

New Dragon Ball, Tegami Bachi Anime to Be Streamed posted on 2008-10-31 14:08 EDT Also streaming next month: anime of One Piece's 'prototype' Romance Dawn
This year's 49th issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine has announced on Saturday that the Jumpland website will stream three of the anime specials — Dragon Ball, Tegami Bachi, and Romance Dawn — that have been screened at this fall's Jump Super Anime Tour events. The free streaming will begin on November 24, the day after the last stop on the tour. There are no indications on whether viewers outside Japan will be blocked by their Internet protocol (IP) addresses.
Dragon Ball manga creator Akira Toriyama himself drafted the story about the fan-favorite character Vegeta's younger brother Table for the tour's anime special. The special is the first new Dragon Ball anime episode in a decade. Tegami Bachi, Hiroyuki Asada's manga about a messenger boy in a strange fantasy land, was animated for the first time for this tour. Also for the first time, the Romance Dawn anime special adapted Eiichiro Oda's "prototype" manga that eventually evolved into his hit One Piece series.
Since this year's 49th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump is also the 2,000th issue of the magazine, Eyeshield 21 artist Yuusuke Murata drew the second half of a poster that combines all the popular characters from Jump's history. The first half was released earlier in this year's 34th issue to mark the 40th anniversary of the magazine. Viz Media has released or will release the Dragon Ball, Tegami Bachi, and One Piece manga in North America.

Golgo 13, The new Cobra series, old school classics that need some decent subs and are nowhere near getting licensed all got short shift by the more prolific fansubbers.

Or historical anime, like Shigurui. And I guess Berserk, though Feudal Japan's better.

412502, What he said^^^^ and... Posted by KwesiAkoKennedy, Thu Nov-06-08 01:41 AM
I would give Ayakashi Ayashi a shot. It's punctuated with action but the stories are mostly character based.
Mushishi should fit the bill.
The remake of Reideen was decent and rather deliberately paced, much to the chagrin of ADD riddled modern mecha fans.
I'm sure you've given Dennou Coil a shot, right?

Lawsuit Launched over Proposed Live-Action Voltron Film posted on 2008-11-18 17:10 EST U.S.-based World Events Productions moves to sue Toei Animation over rights
The American company World Events Productions (WEP) attempted to serve new legal summons on Monday against Japan's Toei Animation for a lawsuit over the proposed live-action film remake of the Voltron animated franchise. In 1981, the Japanese studio Toei Animation created the Hyakujuu Ou Golion (King of Beasts Golion) anime series about young pilots who fight against an empire of alien conquerors — with the help of five mechanized lions that combine to form a robot. Toei also created another television anime series with a combining robot called Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV (Mechanized Fleet Dairugger XV) in the following year. The American company Koplar Communications licensed the rights to Golion and released a dubbed adaptation under the name Voltron: Defender of the Universe in 1984. Dairugger XV would later be adapted under the Voltron name as well.
According to Koplar's WEP production company, Toei and Koplar drafted a series of agreements in 1985 over the use of Golion, Dairugger XV, and the Voltron franchise. WEP produced a computer-animated spinoff series called Voltron: The Third Dimension in 1998, and a dispute between WEP and Toei arose. WEP filed a lawsuit against Toei in 1999, but this lawsuit was settled in 2000 with new agreements.
On August 9, 2007, the Variety entertainment industry newspaper reported that New Regency was close to signing a deal with The Mark Gordon Company over a live-action Voltron film. According to a letter that was filed into court records, Toei Managing Director Masayoshi Endo contacted WEP President Ted Koplar on January 18, 2008 about the Variety article. The letter read in part:
Congratulations! We, however, were surprised with the fact that Toei has not been contacted in connection with this movie planning. As you remember, we had a dispute in the past and settled it in 2000, and now we have no dispute for the animation of Voltron or Golion, which are now all yours.
We, however, do not think that the settlement and the assignment made thereunder shall have given you an exclusive right for live-action movie for Voltron. As you know, in our business, animation and live-action are completely different products and traded separately.
We are especially concerned about the marketing of the possible live-action film in Japan, and we expect you would contact us in due course to deal with this matter.
WEP filed a lawsuit against Toei in February 2008 and amended it in March. In the new lawsuit, WEP contends that as a result of Toei's claims to the live-action film project, "New Regency investigated the existence of possible third-party claims in and to the Golion and/or Voltron properties." WEP continues, "Through that investigation, New Regency identified an artist or author, Kazuo Nakamura, who may possess rights that encumber the Golion and/or Voltron properties and that interfere with World Events' full and lawful enjoyment of the Golion and Voltron properties." Nakamura was the character designer of Golion, and therefore, the animation in the first Voltron series.
On August 17, Variety revealed that New Regency was no longer planning to produce the Voltron film project and never actually signed a deal. It added that New Regency could not "wrap up a deal with Voltron's rights holders , delaying any further development of the pic." According to WEP's court filings, the company "has lost at least one development deal that would have resulted in a live-action motion picture" due to Nakamura's potential rights to Golion and Voltron. WEP filed an amended legal summons for Toei on Monday. WEP is seeking a legal declaration on which rights belong to WEP and which rights belong to Toei or Nakamura.
Neither WEP nor Toei has responded to ANN's requests for comment.
