Clint shows Spike how to make an Oscar trailer

http://www.traileraddict.com/trailer/changeling/trailer

- Mother against the machine
- True story of someone fighting against corruption
- Some showy emotional scenes
- A little insane asylum thrown in (worked for Angie last time)
- Very, very white.

I have to say, this Oscar season wasn't very interesting at first glance but some of the recent trailers (Soloist, Milk, and this) have piqued my interest.
401016, Hmm . . . didn't like the trailer that much.

In particular, with everything from the plate throwing to the kind of half-hearted tone in the reading of her lines, Jolie seems like she may have dropped the ball here. However, I will happily eat my words at a later date if necessary, and I would also take a not-so-good-performance-good-movie over a good-performance-not-so-good movie (A Mighty Heart) any day.

The score appears to have issues, too.

Anyway, I'm hoping the film's more a character study than anything, so maybe that's why the trailer, being as condensed and contrived as it as to be for commercial purposes, doesn't seem up to task.

Still, if it's critically received well, I can't imagine any other Best Original Screenplay winner than J. Michael Straczynski.

Off-topic kinda, but, yeah, the Milk trailer was good. Gave me more hope for the movie than I ever thought I would have.
401056, I guarentee she gets props for being "understated"
Posted by SoulHonky, Thu Sep-11-08 08:51 PM
And I agree with not really knowing where else the film can go besides being more of a character study.
401042, i was hoping it'd say "A Clint Eastwood Joint"

401045, Meh trailer. Awful title. Changeling sounds like a B horror flick.
Posted by bignick, Thu Sep-11-08 07:50 PM
401053, Yeah, the title and original synopsis were why I had such low expectations

"A mother's prayer for her kidnapped son to return home is answered, though it doesn't take long for her to suspect the boy who comes back is not hers."

I really wondered if it was a horror film.
411454, actually IT IS

George C. Scott was in a surprisingly well done, but SO B
movie level horror film called THE CHANGELING

409772, 141 minutes? Nevermind.

I can't handle these two and a half hour epics about non-epic material.
409775, It's getting bad reviews.

Gran Torino is now coming out the 17th. Looks like they are hoping it's the Iwo Jima to Changeling's Flags of our Fathers.

410085, Nevermind again

This movie looks worse than Changeling.

410138, Nope. The "GOAT" gave it 3 and half. THAT'S BETTER THAN ST. ANNA!
Posted by SoulHonky, Fri Oct-24-08 10:33 PM
Clint's going to go over to Spike's house and wave that half star in his face.
410141, The GOAT loves Jolie flicks. *shrug*
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Oct-24-08 10:56 PM
410142, Maybe he just gives her a "fair shot" like he does with Spike
Posted by SoulHonky, Sat Oct-25-08 12:10 AM
Is his Changeling review not "reasonable"? Does Angelina Jolie not "simply strike a chord" which makes her film more relatable?

The GOAT has spoken. I see your shrug and raise you a Cmon, Changeling Better.
410145, It is reasonable, and she strikes a chord with him. I understand.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Oct-25-08 12:41 AM
And that's cool by me. But I know I'm not the biggest Jolie fan (or a fan of Eastwood's recent flicks, for that matter), so I know his opinion and mine are likely to differ.
412014, I hold FIRM that he is the GOAT but he missed 2 in 2 weeks

W. shouldn't have come anywhere close to getting 4 stars. For Ebert that seemed like a classic 2.5 - 3 star movie. As for the changeling, I don't think it deserved 3.5 either. Its wierd because the filming was great and the acting was good, but the story itself is what I had a problem with. The plot was so crazy that the simple "based on a true story" disclaimer could not make up for the lack of plausability.
409866, this sounds like a TAL story except it happened in Louisiana

410098, the movie isn't even getting that good reviews
Posted by dunk, Fri Oct-24-08 05:35 PM
it does look that good and im not a jolie or eastwood hater. im fans of both but this doesn't look like it'll be that good of a movie imo. i cant put my finger on why.

plus the 141 minute running time seems a bit much for a "missing child" movie.
410111, fuck clint eastwood.

yeah i said it.

Take a drink every time Angie says "my son"

The score was irritating, and the film could have used a good 20-25 minute trim (after turning in the first draft, J. Michael Straczynski asked Clint if he had any notes or suggestions for the next draft, and Clint said, naw, let's go shoot it as is... er...)

And the entire enterprise is RELENTLESSLY bleak... there's some rays of hope and a little bit of humor, but overall it's a depressing exercise... I kept thinking of the old Costa-Gavras movie Missing, with Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek... I'd say that movie was just as bleak but better acted...

However, there *is* something to be said about the way the film was shot (beautifully), and while Angie overdid the "GIMME BACK MY SON!" bit I wasn't irritated by her performance... wouldn't surprise me if she gets a nomination...

There were other strong performances as well... Malkovich was aight, but nothing special to write home about... I also liked Amy Ryan, even though she was in the movie for about 15 minutes total... I also thought Jason Butler Harner was quite effective as Northcott... as the police captain/main antagonist, Jeffrey Donovan was so hissable I was halfway expecting him to tell Angie to call him "Snidely Whiplash" and twirl his fake moustache...

Now, there's certainly an interesting story in here (Straczynski said that 95% of the plot you see on the screen is true); it's just that the whole enterprise is just so damn dour and depressing that I'm not sure that the end justifies the means...

edit: amy ryan is an amazing actress that always has small ass parts. you'd think she'd have bigger parts after "Gone Baby Gone"

Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby and now this movie. I don't think I could take another Clint Eastwood downer. I'll probably end up seeing it though.

411647, After seeing it, I'm not surprised its getting so-so reviews..

I didn't even know that going in either..

Jolie turned in a very strong performance. A little overboard at times, but generally it was pretty raw. I wouldn't be surprised if she gets a nod. In truth, there wasn't really any bad acting by any of the cast (that I can remember). (Did anybody else think the Judge looked a hell of a lot like John McCain?)

Lets talk about Eastwood the director for a minute. Say what you will about him, but there is no doubt that he knows how to create a powerful scene. I had some problems with this movie, but I think they stemmed more from me having a hard time buying into the plot at the beginning (even if its a true story) then with any issue with the directing. I was honestly taken by surprise with the potent flashes of graphic violence, and I was struck by the image when, during the boy's first confession, there was a quick pan to the cigarette in the cops hand with a 3 inch ash, which showed you that the he was reacting to the story exactly how the viewer was.

It was certainly a movie that made me frustrated while I was watching it. My girlfriend said she was frustrated by what Jolie's character was going through, but I wasn't sure if I was frustrated by that or the fact that I kind of felt my intelligence was insulted by expecting me to buy into the plot that I found to kind of unbelievable. I'd give it a something in the "B"/"B-" range.
412209, what?

you do know this was based on a true story right?

412217, that is exactly my point, man!!

The simple "based on a true story" disclaimer at the start of the film is supposed to make me suspend my disbelieve to crazy levels? And "based" on a true story means just that. "based". Its not a documentary. In real life, the fake child came out and admitted he was lying after a week, and THAT is what released the mother from the psycho ward. In real life, the killer's mother testified to killing Walter Collins, was herself convicted, and later tried to recant.

In real life, the OJ Simpson-sized story was the murder of the 20 kids, not the story of Ms Collins. Eastwood chose to make that the subject of the film, so he had to fictionalize her story. I thought choices, actions, and reactions of Jolie's character to be totally unbelievable, and borderline absurd. Jolie and Eastwood did the best they could with a whack script.

And since when does putting "based on a true story" at the beginning of a movie change the rules? The plot doesn't have to make sense as long as there is a 5 word phrase on the screen at the beginning of the movie? And sometimes that technique is used as creative device. Think Fargo and Blair Witch Project, two movies that used that claim falsely on purpose to elicit a different response from the audience than they would have gotten otherwise.
411894, They didnt have to show her crying so much

411899, wrong lead actress
Posted by jambone, Mon Nov-03-08 10:27 AM
she was terrible

the movie had potential, it was killed mainly by the lead actress.

didn't help that the story was all over the place towards the end.

had potential, they failed to execute it.

not really Oscar worthy. This film IMO is more about the manipulation done by the media and criminals than a mother's grief over her missing child. Jolie does a fine job and to be honest this film might not have been as watchable without her in the lead.
